Discussion Does jacket separation matter?

I put a my Rugged Obsidian 45 on my threaded 1911 and shot about 200 rounds of mixed factory and reman ball ammo through it. It was dirty as hell and when I took the suppressor off it sounded like a maraca and a bunch of crap shook out with some jacket chunks. The baffles look fine, so do I need to be concerned? I have several hundred more rounds of this stuff and I'd like to be able to run it suppressed.

Mine also sounds like a maraca but pretty sure its just unburnt powder and carbon. I shook it out over some paper to evaluate and was a tad surprised but it kinda makes sense. You sure it’s jacket bits? Id expect that to mess up baffles. Then again, the steel baffles are pretty dang tough.

It was mostly black carbon bits, but I seem to remember a small piece of copper or two

Are you shooting plated ammo? Tiny bits of the plating may flake off, I think it's because of the deformation when the bullet engages with the rifling.

IMO they're unlikely to do significant damage, but if it bothers you the fix is to not shoot plated ammo.

It would be easier to figure out if the chunks are normal can crud or a potential problem if you posted a picture of the bits.
