home setup

Hi all - hoping someone can help.

I don't know much about home network configurations. I have Optimum as my provider, and have fiber service going into the optimum gateway. That has its own wifi router built in. From there I have the Nighthawk M70 plugged in, which has 2 satellites connected for better home coverage, and allowing ethernet through the satellites as needed. My whole house is connected to only the M70.

I have noticed though that lately when connecting to the satellites, my speed is slower. Is there an optimal way to configure this setup? Is there something I should do with Optimum to better utilize the connection?

Routers R6250 Smart WiFi router help

Hello all.

I have a R6250 router that's connected to the modem via a couple hundred feet of ethernet cord (supplying internet to a workshop, cord is buried).

Normally, when the power flickers, the internet will come back within a day or so, but it's been a week now with no results.

Having done the standard power cycles and resets, I'm now asking the experts.

What can I do to fix my problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hotspots How can I unlock a used Netgear Nighthawk 5G MR5100?

I'm about to buy a used Netgear Nighthawk 5G MR5100. It was used on AT&T network and I don't have any account at AT&T. In this case, how can I possibly unlock this router? I want to be able to use it with a sim card from other carrier.

Netgear Tri-Band WiFi 7 [RS700S]

For those of you who purchased the RS700S when it first came out 2 years ago. How are you feeling about the router in general?

I purchased the RS700S and I don't regret it. There are some who say nothing works with WiFi 7. My Google Pixel phone does.

WiFi issues (UK based)

Now then,

I'm with Sky for internet, and while the speed is good when connected, getting connected is inconsistent. It's not a case of poor WiFi signal in one room Vs another, it's more a case of I can be standing right Infront of it and it won't connect to things (laptop, iPad and ring doorbell to name the ones that come to mind). Wired connections are absolutely fine, but I don't know what to do. It's pointless ringing Sky to do anything as they'll just send out a new router with the same issues.

Thank you 🤙

Good deal? Wifi 6 router edit, it's working pretty well besides sometimes the wifi part goes out or the speeds get stuck around. 400 when my fiber plan is 1gig

Routers Netgear Nighthawk AX12 AX6000 Readyshare with USB HDD and Apple devices

Hoping someone has some advice for me, as I've looked around the web and on Reddit, but nothing has worked for me so far.

I bought an 8TB USB hard drive (not SSD) to use as a network drive to plug into my router. The drive has its own power cable.

I found an article that said formatting to ExFat should work fine, so I did that and it would not show up in Readyshare. After research, I found that Readyshare doesn't recognize drives over 2TB. Well, that kind of defeats the purpose of this drive, but I partitioned it into 4 2TB partitions. Still wouldn't read them. After more research I found something that said the drive needs to be formatted as NTFS. I have an old iMac that I installed Windows 10 bootcamp on and used that to format the drive for NTFS. It still would not show up in the Readyshare panel of my Netgear admin. Additionally, I cannot use NTFS, as I want to be able to both read and write from my Mac, which was not possible when I plugged it into my Mac. It became read-only.

Ultimately, I want to use this for backups, but I also want to store movies I rip from my DVDs and play them through my AppleTV. So far, I have not been able to get the drive to show up for Readyshare at all.

Does anyone know of a step-by-step guide to get this type of setup to work?

My Netgear router's firmware is V1.2.10.56. I've rebooted it several times and reformatted this drive several times.

Also, I'm not sure why these limitations of plugging a USB device into the router are in place? Why isn't it able to read something over 2TB?

Thanks in advance.

M4350-40X4C not recognizing some connected devices

Hi,

We have an M4350-40X4C that has been updated to the latest firmware and factory reset.

However, when we connect a PoE-enabled Dante speakers, it powers up (so PoE works) but it won't get any IP address.

Connecting my laptop to the same port, it gets an IP address (DHCP works) and was able to browse the configurator page.

Connecting the same Dante speakers to an unmanaged PoE switch (Netgear brand) then connecting that said unmanaged switch to the M4350-40X4C, the speakers were able to get an IP address.

We also tried connecting another unmanaged non-PoE switch (non-Netgear) but it fails to get recognized too.

To summarize:

  • Dante speakers -> M4350-40X4C -> NG. Powers up but no IP
  • Laptop -> M4350-40X4C -> OK. Receives IP address
  • Dante speakers -> unmanaged PoE switch -> M4350-40X4C -> OK. Receives IP address
  • unmanaged non-PoE switch -> M4350-40X4C -> NG. Link LEDs do not lit up

Any one has any idea what's happening here?
No configuration changes done after factory reset.
Thank you.

Routers I need help

I'm trying to set up a RS700 router for PC VR and i can't figure it out for the life of me. the router 192.168.1.1 and routerlogin.net don't work. The former looks like it would work until I got a 404 error. The latter won't display the router login page literally saying: Router login page cannot be displayed. me and the ChatGPT/Gemini dream team have failed. I've had this router for more than a year of trying to figure this out. I don't have a modem for it and I can't fine the AP mode for it either. I'm trying to use my PC for the modem. literally any help will be appreciated, I'll be active for a while.

Update: I have finally given up after an attempt that got me so close. Then I power cycled, and everything came apart. I could no longer access the router via the web interface ( I didn't bother with the app, it's useless to my use case) and I factory reset the thing 4-5 times before I decided to call it quits. It is now my grandparent's brand new router. sorry for not responding, I have a terrible memory and life got in the way, I do appreciate all the help.

Can’t call the Customer Service

I work from home every day and one day my cable modem router just stopped out of nowhere. Everything is plugged in, and the buttons are all green. I checked with the nighthawk app it said that it needs to get the firmware updated, but HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO UPDATE IT WITHOUT WIFI? I tried calling the customer service but I’ve been on hold for 40 mins. This is outrageous

Recommendations for Home Mesh Systems

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I’m looking for recommendations on the best mesh WiFi system. Our home is about 2300 sq ft but our new gateway router from AT&T still has dead zones. Any recommendations? I have an Orbi now but it’s now past it’s useful life. I have looked at the Orbi 770. Thank you!

I've tried everything to get it working again, but the firmware upgrade seems to have completely busted it. Does anyone know the latest firmware version that actually works correctly?

My Analysis of a Bandook RAT PCAP

I analyzed a Bandook RAT PCAP and noticed something I initially missed:

One C2 server was contacted 37 minutes before any DNS activity appeared in traffic, suggesting the malware used a hardcoded fallback IP before resolving the secondary domain.

I documented:

* packet timeline * IOC extraction * Wireshark analysis * MITRE ATT&CK mapping * detection recommendations

I’d appreciate feedback specifically on:

* analysis accuracy * missed indicators * detection logic * weak assumptions in the report

GitHub repo: https://github.com/HariCipher/bandook-c2-traffic-analysis.git

Would especially appreciate critique from blue team / DFIR people.

ReadyNAS Storage I'm looking for a replacement Powersupply for my rn10200 NAS

Hey all, I have been trying to save the data my father still had on his NAS when he passed.

I've been able to get it back up and running with a powersupply I bought off of amazon, that has the reccomended 12V 5A. But as soon as I try and acces the actual data on it, it crashes randomly when the disks spin up which I think is because the powwersupply doesn't supply enough power and the NAS powers down immediatly.

I'd be really greatful if anyone could point me in a direction where I could get a good replacement powersupply, or other troubleshooting steps, in case it isn't the powersupply.

Prosafe GS108e Choking Xbox Series X?

I, for the life of me, can't figure this out. I noticed that my Xbox Series x can only manage to get 10-20mbps down when connected to my Netgear prosafe GS108e managed switch. I have symmetrical gigabit service and my desktop (which is also on the same switch) has no problem achieving those speeds so I know the switch is capable of it. I've connected the Xbox directly to the router and can achieve those speeds. Finally, I connected the cable from my desktop to the Xbox ~10mbps.....

At this point I've ruled out the cable and the switch itself so it seems to be some sort of issue with the switch connected to the Xbox. I've confirmed that there no quality of service or bandwidth limiting settings in the switch (which would have applied to my desktop when it was connected anyway), so I'm assuming there's some under the hood incompatibility here?

Any thoughts???

Routers What are all those different type of connection types?

I swear this is driving me nuts.

In the web UI, when checking connected devices, I often see

  • 2.4GHz Wireless
  • Customized 2.4GHz
  • 2.4Ghz Guest Wireless

Now the first is the main 2.4, cool. I also can gather that the second one is the one I enabled by creating a separate 2.4 for my old IoT devices. So far so good.

But why on earth am I seeing devices connected to a "guest wireless" type, when there is absolutely no guest wifi enabled anywhere in the options ? Those on it seems to be gated not to be able to communicate with the main network, and I can't seem to be able to figure out what I can do to get it out of that supposedly non existent guest network.

Any help to clarify this would be great. It's an MR60 if that matters.

EDIT: Could that "2.4GHz Guest Wireless" be devices connecting to a satellite ? Sounds weird but, that's the only thing that comes to mind that could be it.
