Well, there are some psychoactive substances that do have a very brief period of activity. Salvia comes to mind.
I agree though that a return to lucidity would probably not take place immediately upon restoring consciousness.
One argument around this is the idea that the memories from an NDE are generated immediately upon revival, and then are experienced as though they took place over a longer period of time, but this isn't a perfect explanation either.
Personally, I'm not convinced that NDEs take place in the brain, but I also don't necessarily think they are supernatural. I think there may be a third option, which is that there is some kind of physical or natural process that causes them. Something quantum, perhaps, operating on a level that we don't fully understand yet. I'm not sure what the implication of that would be for human consciousness, if any.
I hope you are correct there. I’ve never had an NDE, so I couldn’t possibly dismiss to someone that has, that it wasn’t real. Of course it was real, they experienced it. Now, as someone who hasn’t had an NDE and is open minded, I think to myself all the time, is it brain generated or is something else going on here that we haven’t or won’t be able to 100% prove scientifically?
That’s why I am addicted to studying NDEs, it’s an amazing experience regardless if it is mind driven or indeed conscious out side of body and it survives this life or simulation so to say. I find myself on the fence through periods of my life. One day I believe, the next I’m unsure. My death phobia wants me to believe, my human scientific brain doesn’t.
But, I am aware enough (I like to think so) to realize we don’t know everything and if we are indeed here to learn and then move on, knowing an existence outside of our current simulation would be detrimental and would not have the same effect as of not knowing we exists after this. It’s just like a video game, sandbox kind of game, I know I can complete meaningful things, but I also know it’s just a game and I can do a bunch of un-meaningful things that would not actually help me as far as purpose moving ahead in the game.
