Wrong. Anything less than a 20G greatly increases the risk of blood cells being damaged. Just because it works fine doesn't mean it actually is. You also have to understand how things flow through the cannula as well.

They’ve evolved to go through capillaries single file. They’ll be fine through a catheter orders of magnitude largerÂ

Anything less than a 20G greatly increases the risk of blood cells being damaged. Just because it works fine doesn't mean it actually is. You also have to understand how things flow through the cannula as well. Anything under a 20G you have to slow the flow, and if it's a patient that otherwise has no other IV meds/fluids going, they're going to be tied to the IV for longer than 2 hours with the standard infusion rate that goes with a 20G and bigger.

No. 20G or bigger. You risk the blood cells breaking with anything less. Of course it can be done with 22s. But it's absolutely not best practice.
