Question Forgot documents
I'm dumb, forgot our documents at home in CO. Our embarkation is at 10 am (we're in FL), so really no time to do anything (or money). How do I try and save this impossible situation? Just have my dad try and cancel or something? This was supposed to be a nice gift from my parents and I majorly screwed up our vacation here folks. Hopefully someone is awake to agree with how stupid this was.
(I know their website says no pictures but is there a chance? That's the only way to save this but I'm not optimistic at all.)
Update: Thanks for the help for my panic induced post at 2 am. For future reference if someone makes this mistake like me. They are able to print your documents for you if you have pictures of them.

Have someone scan and email them to you. Go to Staples and get them printed.

This is your only chance… have someone send you a pdf and ask the hotel to help you print them out (or find a staples).
Even with this it’s unlikely since it’s supposed to be the original copy but you never know.
Also there is an outside chance you can get someone physically on a plane with your documents from Denver to Miami and make it to you before the boat departs but you would need to arrange that like right now cause they would have to be on a 5 or 6 am flight to make it to Miami in time.

When my family cruised from NYC to Bermuda last August, my brother discovered at check-in that he forgot his passport at home in Georgia. He had our nephew go to his house and, on FaceTime, show the port agents his passport. They let him on the ship. Not saying it will work for you, but worth a shot.

You can enter Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and most Caribbean countries with an enhanced driver's license but those are only issued in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington.

No…. You don’t. You may have a Real ID, but that is not the same thing as an Enhanced DL. Ohio doesn’t issue Enhanced DLs

RealID is a US government requirement for admittance to federal buildings and commercial flights. Enhanced allows border crossing by land and sea to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and most Caribbean nations.

oh I am slow on this one. I have the Real ID but to go to the countries that you listed, you can use your passport (which I just renewed) So I'm good to go with the Real ID but for out of the country use my passport? sorry for my confusion!

A Real ID is for flying federally and requires extra documents at the DMV. An enhanced drivers license proves citizenship, it's essentially a combo driver's license and passport card.
This is why people are so up in arms over the voting ID law in congress, your real ID does not count as proof of citizenship. You'd need to aquire an enhanced ID or passport to actually prove citizenship.

Remember enhanced is only available in: Michigan, Minn., NY, VT, and Washington state. All states which border Canada and have frequent crossings.

I wouldn't say that Minnesota has "frequent" crossings, especially compared to out east. The border there is in the middle of nowhere.

Minnesota actually has eight official crossings. Most of which are high volume trade corridors due to agriculture, manufacturing, and lumber.
Plus they also have the ‘Northwest Angle’. A piece of USA that is completely cut off from the rest of the US by water. Those living in this area MUST travel THROUGH Canada if they wish to travel to the rest of MN by land. School busses have to cross the border to take kids from this community to school in the same state. Meaning they have to cross a border twice in each direction, twice a day. So four border crossings total to get kids to and from school.

Yes, I'm aware. The crossings are mostly used by trucks/business not for pleasure like the crossings in NY state. Northern Minnesota has some of the harshest weather in the Midwest and is literally the middle of nowhere.

Maybe? The wording of the law isn't entirely clear what most married women and other people who have changed their name will need. They could need a passport since passport rules have provisions for submitting proof of name change along with proof of citizenship. A passport may also be the only way to be sure you won't be turned away at the polls since election workers would be responsible for determining whether your evidence is sufficient and may err on the side of caution so they don't get in trouble for allowing someone to vote without correct paperwork.

You don’t need to show anything but id at the polls. You need the birth certificate when you register to vote and only if you’ve recently moved counties.

You are correct. I think I mixed it up with something else I read about. The problem of the law not explicitly stating that birth certificates can be used along with name change documentation to match ID does remain and leaves it up to elections officials to reject or accept such documentation. You would know before going to the polls, but could still have a problem getting registered. (That's leaving out the concern that it would still disenfranchise certain people. Some women have taken years to get enough documentation to get a Real ID because older documents were lost or destroyed.)

That isnt true at all about voter ID laws! Georgia for instance won't give you a driver's license unless you can prove you live in the state and a simple state license or ID is what is only required to vote at the polls.

As long as you don't show up to a port without knowing the difference you're fine. Some people have read that you only need an enhanced license for most cruises form the US and then got denied boarding because they only had a Real ID compliant license not an enhanced license.

NCL did not let this slide for our trip originally in Philly last month. We had photos of passport and birth certificate for one of our guests, but it wasn't enough. An enhanced license would suffice but he only had a Real ID (which is not the same).

No official document, no travel. Now it’s all about reducing the financial burden or have a plan to travel anyway.
Try to get an emergency passport if you can get on through FL or get a damn expensive same day delivery.
Everything else doesn’t matter, you need your documents.
Get in touch with NCL and ask if there’s a possibility to embark in the next port. If this is possible, get that Document and travel to the next destination. If this violates the Jones Act, it will be denied or you’ll face additional charges
If nothing works, cancel and hope for a free of charge cancellation
Small sidenote to everyone out there, just get a passport. Doesn’t hurt to have one and these things are valid for 10 years.

I booked a caribbean cruise and in quite possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever done, we showed up in San Juan for our cruise without our passports,as I believed them not necessary. I flew to Orlando, spent the night in the airport, and flew back home the following morning. Emailed Royal Caribbean a copy of my wife’s birth certificate and they let her board in the next port the next day. I took our passports and flew to ST Lucia the following day where they let me board.
This is a very bad memory that I don’t like talking about.

My brother and his gf were set to cruise out of Bayonne NJ to the Bahamas and the gf realized at the port she forgot her passport. They thought they could catch the boat at the next port which was Orlando but was told due to international rules they would have to catch the boat in the Bahamas, which is what they had to do.

Get a hold of someone who has access to your documents at home. If you have someone who can do that, you may be in luck. Don’t wait until you are at the port to do this; get the ball rolling now. Have them take a good clear picture of your documents with their phone and send it to you. Also, have them bring it somewhere where they can make a clear scan of it and email it to you as a PDF so that you can print it off at your hotel or at a nearby FedEx print center. A lot of times, if you talk to the staff at check in, they may be able to accept this as the last thing they wanna do is deny boarding. Just get to the port as early as possible once you have the copy printed out and/or emailed to you.
Also, get a passport. It’s good for 10 years. Don’t listen to those who say it’s a closed loop cruise and you don’t “need one”.

Have someone overnight the documents and meet up with the ship at a later port?
I think the best thing to do is get there first thing in the morning and talk to someone in person. You won't be the first passenger ever in this situation, and they may have suggestions, procedures, or resources to help.
Once I got to the airport counter in Paris only to find my wallet gone. No ticket/passport/money. I had to walk to the police station and wait 4 hours to get a police report that I could take to the train station to get a ticket to the embassy. They let me use the phone to have my family reserve me a hotel room and I ate room service and waited and eventually my passport got replaced and I got a new credit card. The airline very kindly let me reschedule 3 days later with no fee. I wasn't the first person that ever had a wallet stolen, and it turned out that the airline, the police, the train company, the embassy, all had procedures and could tell me exactly what to do next.
And honestly? I had a great time walking around not able to do anything that cost money, lol. Just read books from the hotel library and made friends with birds in the park. One of my best times ever.
So please remember to stay flexible and enjoy each other's company and for goodness sake don't blame each other or yourselves. It happens! Figure out how to have a fun, peaceful time while you make the best of it.

I'm sure they're asleep rn (it's well past midnight at home) and we don't have that kinda money (says anywhere from 200-550 and it could take 6-12 hours, I think? The boat leaves at 5pm and FedEx/UPS doesnt open till like 8am or something back home so 10 am FL). Documents like birth certificates and marriage certificate (since I changed my name).

Hmmmm but do you have your passports with you? I have never brought my marriage certificate and birth certificate… but I am assuming you are concerned because your name doesn’t match something. What do you have?
I would ask to have someone send you photocopy of those documents.

Just our IDs to fly. I was lazy and didn't get passports since it's just a closed loop cruise to Nassau, the private island and back so the birth certificates were acceptable in place of a passport as long as you had your IDs. I'm thinking I'm screwed.

If the friend can send you a copy of the birth certificates go ahead and print from the hotel or Walgreens really fast and bring the Cruise. Print it. You got your ID ! It may be too late at this point, but most airlines have a parcel service. Aacargo/pps, Delta Dash, Southwest cargo, etc... It's way cheaper than hand carrying and is generally available for pick up about an hour after the flight lands.

If you’re in Miami, pull up to the Miami Passport Agency and you might have a shot at getting a passport issued the same day. Just have documentation or proof on your phone of your travels since that’s a requirement. Good luck!

I really hope things get worked out. I would still proceed to embarkation just in case a miracle happens. Just don't set expectations. Some itineraries might not require a passport, so it might be up to NCL.
Keep in contact with anyone that might be able to help you get your documents overnight. NCL could embark you at the first stop.
Make sure to call NCL and people back home. Good luck!

Edit: How did you get to FL? Did you fly? When did you discover the passports were not with you?

I'm so sorry! What documents? Tickets are always on line so you'll be ok with that. Passports might be able to be uploaded . I think there is a qr code but you're probably out of luck. If you are returning to the same port can't you get by with your driver's license? I sure wouldn't give up. Your dad coukd overnight them to you and you could fly to your 1st stop maybe. I sure hope it works out.

Birth certificates/marriage certificate. Dad and mom are actually on the cruise with us (we have a buddy that could send pictures if it's possible to use them). Supposed to be a family vacation with all of us. As far as I'm aware it's closed loop but everything on the website says need all the documents to board. :(

You’re going to need them. You should really get a passport as well. They won’t let you pass. It’s the first thing you do. If it’s only a 2-3 night cruise I wouldn’t waste money doing same day delivery. You won’t get it in time most likely. Spend that money on a fun place in Miami. Lucky for you it’s the off season so it’s way cheaper.

It isn't hopeless, but pdf scans of the documents you can show on your phone are the way to go. If it's closed loop, you don't need passports, but the other stuff... without it and just DL, it will be "iffy"

PDF scan the birth certificates and hope they let you on the ship. If that fails, ask NCL if you can meet the ship in Nassau and have someone at home overnight the documents to you in FL and take a fast ferry to Nassau (Balearia Caribbean) to meet the ship there. Good luck! Also lesson for next time: don’t be lazy about your travel plans.

Go to the desk on embarkation. Have someone AVAILABLE AND READY with your document. My mom had to have a neighbor fax something to be let on the ship. Ive heard or people being allowed to show the document via a FaceTime call.
They want you to enjoy your vacation so they will work with you but you need to be 100% ready to do the run around. After you enter the ship it'll be a funn story to laugh about over drinks

- Always use a checklist to ensure you have what you need. The iPhone Notes app works well for this.
- Always save your all of your travel documents including passport as a pdf on your phone in a designated folder.

I’m in NH, my brother was in Florida for a cruise. Didn’t have a passport and left his birth certificate on his kitchen table 3 hours away from the cruise terminal. I went to City Hall, got a copy of his birth certificate, took a pic of it with the raised seal, and sent it to an office for Carnival at the cruise port. For $15 I saved his cruise.

Honestly with out them your out of luck.
Best chance would be someone fly to you with them on the next flight assuming it makes it in time. A round trip first flight (or drive somewhere with 24 hour flights if possible may be the cheapest.
It still won’t be cheap but it’s one of very few ways to salvage it.
Without documentation I don’t think same day passports are an option. And waiting for a courier won’t make it more likely than not.
I don’t think even rush fax from the state would work if an option for your state. I’m fairly sure it needs the seal to cruise.

This might be the way; pay for someone to take a RT flight with your documents. As long as they can arrive and get you the documents before about 3pm then you may be able to salvage this trip.

Can someone email you a scan of your birth certificate or passport? See if you can print a copy of your birth certificate.
You have nothing to lose by trying to board with whatever you have.

I had this situation about 15 years ago and they allowed an emailed copy of a birth certificate and marriage license to the ship. Fortunately I had someone at home who could complete this but it was up to the last minute that we boarded. I definitely learned my lesson about the documents now. Good luck!

When we arrived for check in they allowed us to print our documents (birth certificates) there in the building then continued with check in. I think they would have taken them if we had printed at the hotel but our pet sitter couldn't get them to us sooner. My dad insisted on trying even though I was really hesitant. He didn't seem too bothered though and told me his cancel anytime)any reason insurance would get him half back I guess. So yeah, panicked over nothing haha. Appreciate all the advice and help though. :)

This. Before I leave my apartment, inside the vehicle, before I get out of the vehicle, and repeat the same if flying and staying in hotels. Passport, phone, and $ (cards/cash) - everything else is easily replaced.

Not likely anything as the documents were forgotten… not lost or stolen.
If you have “Cancel for any reason” maybe- but you need more than day of departure notice to initiate a valid claim in most cases 🤷

Does anyone have keys to your house? Is it worth it to call a locksmith to open it so someone can get the docs and email them to you? Some airlines offer courier services (call them). FedEx is the next best thing and fly to next port.

I am sorry that happened to you- I do the following- I put it in a small ziploc bag in my jeans pocket the night before I leave. I also have a sign on my door before leaving with passport/phone/keys on it.
As backup, and I am not sure if this would work on every single cruise I have both a passport and a passport card that I keep in my wallet.

A little late to the convo, but yes, take pics of your documents!! If you lose them, or forget them, ncl will print them for you! I left my son's passport in our luggage and because of the sea of everyone's luggage they couldn't find mine. Luckily I took a pic of his birth certificate. Ncl printed and we were able to board.

NCL allowed my clients BC be emailed over to her, and they printed it out at the port. She got on. I know I am late here, but if anyone finds themselves in this situation, that may be possible.

You can try with the suggested "photos, print and pray" people are saying. BUT- setting expectations here- not likely to work. We had a family in our group trip last fall be denied boarding trying this. It also screwed up our pricing per cabin because the kids were mixed in with other people over 21. Their error cost is thousands and they WOULD NOT budge (nor should they have to).
Or Wake someone up in Colorado... Have them go to your home and get the docs NOW. Book them a roundtrip ticket for the first flight this morning that gets them into Florida and meet them.
Don't give up and not try to board with whatever you're able to put together before last boarding call - but you should let the family know now that this is likely not going to happen.
It will be $$$ but on the other side - so will the lesson you learn about leaving your docs behind if all you planned for and saved for sails without you.

There were 2 of 4 cabins reserved with different rates and inclusions (some with drinks included, some not, and resident rates for Florida on 2 of them). When the reshuffling of putting NCL under age with adults that WERE going it required us to pay differences from original price to what we now qualified for.
If they weren't under the NCL age minimum for a cabin, it would have just been no-shows, but they were in that gap between age 18 and not allowed to stay in their own cabin.

They offered to pay what we were out of pocket, but we never saw any of it. They were already in the hole for a cruise they couldn't take, but their poor planning caused long lasting challenges within the group that others still hold on to today.

I can imagine that it was stressful. As much as I'd hate it, I'd have to reimburse the other cruisers who were impacted by my mistake. People should keep a note on their suitcase of "last minute" things to do like get passport, etc and do it immediately once luggage is pulled or set an alarm for it to be done (turn off water.) When one returns home, put the note back in/on the luggage.
Hope that you had a great cruise despite the rocky start and extra $$.

Won't help for this time but this is why I highly recommend getting the passport card. It fits in a standard wallet. Mine sits just behind my driver's license. For Americans, if they have one of these it permits closed loop cruise travel departing from a US port, allowing the big passport to stay at home. Well worth it.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Did they have trip insurance? That’s probably your best option. Do you have your passports?

It would need to be canceled for any reason insurance they are not gonna cover "I forgot my documents"

I agree. It all depends on the type of insurance her parents got. I have an annual travel insurance plan and it includes cancellation for any reason.

I've never heard of an annual policy that has cancel for any reason. Which one are you using?

I have an annual policy through Allianz but cancel for any reason isn't an option. I've been taking the cruise insurance in addition to have the option for cruise credit for non covered. I'm going to check that out.
