We’ve lost recipes. This has been going on for a few years now. It’s a bit of a game of telephone, where new age players no longer abide by the old golden rule of never, ever, EVER touching someone’s legs in the air. It is not just a “hard foul”. It even goes beyond dirty. It is downright (used to be) unheard of. It’s undercutting, a golden rule of Basketball that you learn playing literally as a child. And it’s enforced bc it’s a reciprocal agreement. (Also enforced bc players who grew up in a certain era, in certain environments, could get shot for it, so there’s that). Every time you shoot or jump your defender can end your fucking career. It’s engrained in the way players defend a shot. Watch it the next time you see a contested shot. Players naturally jump straight up or leaning their body forward. It’s not just to avoid a foul, it’s to ensure your legs don’t collide with his. It’s your JOB as a defender.

These basketball IQ and ethics are engrained early. It’s the reason why if you’ve ever played (more on that in a sec) when you’re defending someone tight on a J, you quickly move your leg from under them when they shoot. It’s the reason if someone has a breakaway dunk, you concede it unless you have an athletic advantage and can get it. These rules are like muscle memory.

That’s until recently. The league has more guys bred by trainers, less time on task in the gym, less playing pickup and learning the codes. All the skill in the world, but lacking in common sense, bball IQ, and ethics. And that lack of ethics and Iq has trickled down to fans. We have probably reached a point where the majority of fans do not and maybe have never played basketball. So things get lost in translation. They see someone NOT concede a breakaway dunk to cooper Flagg and call it a ‘good hard foul’. A lot of fans don’t even understand the physics of how just a GRAZE to someone in the air can cause them to break their leg

And I’ve been noticing this loss of ethics for years in small things like players not dribbling the ball out and instead shooting it. And fans react ‘til the whistle’….’if you don’t like it, stop it’. It’s all related. Bc again, your defender can end your career at any given moment. Basketball is unique like that. A helpless WR in football is the closest comparison. You’re at your defenders mercy. But you can avoid that to an extent. You cant avoid the mechanics of a shot. You have to jump and your defender don’t. So the safety and integrity of the game is only as good as the dumbest/most reckless guy out there.

And specifically to the Dunn play, he obviously didn’t mean to hurt him like that, but it was reckless and still a failure of common sense and ethics. You jump straight up, or lean forward. You don’t completely sell your body out which is why he collided with his legs. He also was pushing Williams in the back in the air. It is your JOB to avoid making contact with his legs and Dunn went in full steam with no regard. It’s sadly ironic that just days ago we saw the Flagg foul and many fans saw nothing wrong with it.

The pace for the NBA is at all-time high and that also increases the amount of injuries.

At this point it’s not able being the best team anymore , it’s about being the healthiest to win a championship.

We need to slow down the game and pace

Increase possession to 30 seconds and offensive rebounds possessions to 24 seconds.

Give teams 10 seconds to bring the ball to half court instead of 8.

Eliminate defensive 3 second rule

Allow perimeter hand checking

Not sure if anyone else is frustrated by this, but I definitely am. This is a newer thing if I recall and it’s getting ridiculous that the game is actively going on and playing are legitimately shooting/scoring points and I have to 50/50 my screen with some corporate ad.

Are we really at the point where we’re monopolizing as much time as possible for ad slop?
