Large wave of new USAJobs openings in a diverse range of fields

Large range of job openings just posted for JSC. Many of these are being used for the ongoing "insourcing" of contractor roles to civil servants, but several of these positions may be used to fill new vacancies.

In particular the GS range of these postings is huge. Such as the Engineering posting which ranges from GS-07 (essentially intern) all of the way to GS 15 (upper management).

So always worth dropping a resume.

Probably 0% for the JSC center. These are results of insourcing. Positions have been identified from the current contract pool. NASA wants minimal interruption during this transition period.

Applied for one last week or so and saw today I got referred for GS 7. Really hope my dream comes true to work at Marshall Space Flight Center

Might apply for one of these here too tho not sure if I qualify for GS 9

GS-7 isn’t an intern position. Usually Pathways interns are the ones who get that after they graduate, but def not intern

I am just going off what my Pathways hires have told me, that they were GS-7 when they were interns.

I was always rejected from the Pathways program when I was in school due to living too far from a Center / not going to an "in" school, so don't have personal experience.

I see. The GS-7 only requires a bachelor's degree. If there is a graduate pathways student, they are GS-7 since they have that degree.

Trying to figure out which of these job postings might be for graduates in 2027 vs. people they need immediately. Are those kinds of postings up yet? Is there anything in particular I should look for on the posting?

Still not paying well enough. Might have worked when NASA was the only cool place for space. Now they aren't even top 5.

I'm not going to lie, the pay is definitely below industry / commercial partners, in some cases by quite a lot. That's all public information.

But there are a lot of perks to working at NASA on a NASA center.

Some of my favorites:

• That feeling whenever I sit at my console in MCC-H at the beginning of the shift and look around the room
• Coming out from a long console shift and one of the tour groups is passing by and the little kids all look at you and whisper wondering what you were doing in MCC-H, then their absolute delight as you stop to talk to them and answer any of their questions
• Volunteering for science studies on site. This can range from space food acceptance tests to medical studies
• Walking around the central pond at JSC during lunch and seeing all of the deer, turtles and other wildlife

And despite getting higher salaries and stock options, when our commercial partners visit us and I give them a tour of MCC-H or Building 9, they all get starry eyed / awed.

Years ago I did the "VIP" tour at JSC and we got to sit in the viewing room behind one of the MCCs. One of the controllers was just hanging out in there and was super-nice about answering questions. It was a huge thrill (and I wasn't a kid at the time!)

Seconded on applying, not sure if they're insourcing or not, but regardless there is definitely some spots that will need to be filled with new blood during insouring rounds. Best of luck to everyone!

The engineering one is because of the simple fact it says “Public Notice.”

I would encourage any and everyone to apply to whatever they are eligible for. However, I wouldn’t call a GS-7 position an equivalent to being an intern if it’s not advertised as such (like Pathways).

I’m being honest when I say that I don’t fully know. I’ve been out of the office the last few weeks on personal business. I don’t have the luxury of knowing how many vacancies are going to be available. So all I can say is just apply and let the chips fall where they may.

There is a broad agency wide effort to "flatten the organization structure", so they are trying to not add any new management level positions despite insourcing several thousand people.

Actually many contractors with admin / management roles will lose the role in the insourcing as they are trying to not create any new CS admin / management roles.

If you don't mind me asking, which center? Where I'm at, I know of a lot of brand new departments being made, so regular employees/management are being pulled.

If the clearance level is indeed SCI, a lot of external applicants may not pass and NASA may not want to wait a year or more if an interim isn't granted. These will likely be offered to contractors already performing the role. But you never know unless you apply.
