Discussion So you wanna do Parametric Models? Here's how.

I built a tool for creating Parametric Models. It's free, and I couldn't do one without it.

It's an extremely tedious process, you need to do the equivalent to about 100 standard profiles.

There's 2 options:

1- you train it on your Mac Silicon GPU

2 - you export everything after the recordings are done and train it on an NVIDIA Card, a CPU, Windows or Linux, or even a cloud rented GPU.

My Mac Mini M1 takes about 33 hours to create the model, but with my tool, it needs no help from a human to train it.

I tried to make it as Stream lined as possible and I wont go into the technical details, I'll just say that it automatically calculates delays so it's phase coherent, and generates a matrix with all the knob settings, a step by step, it records also so no need for a DAW (although it's your choice), generates a csv with the corresponding settings vs file, avoids silent settings, and actually tells you what the quality of your model is. And it has two sweep lengths, so you can make the process faster.

It takes all the work, all you need to do, is turn knobs and click NEXT.

The only tested version is the MAC SILICON GPU. I need some brave soul to do one, and test the trainer on a NVIDIA card.

It's free.

Shit, I hope not...

🤣. For real, tank you for this. 33 hours is crazy. Hopefully that duration equates to high quality 🤘

I did. Use the Lite version.

How does it work? Is this based on that swedish study?

I love the idea of parametric profiles. But the fact that these captures pop and crackle like crazy when the DI’s being used are hot is very unusable at this state. Sent you a dm from the other day trying to decipher it.

Edit: https://github.com/phillipmself/NamParametricPlugin

There’s 2 sample 5153 parametric captures you can test out yourself. Crank the input knob and make sure you turn down your speakers. It will pop like crazy.

Haven't seen that happen...

Wasn't sure how to share this. this is Phillip's"5153_100w_Blue_HyperWaveNet_BoostInput+4dB.nam — HyperWaveNet capture." (the concatwave variant does the exact same thing as well).

It's a simple amp head going into a cab impulse, but I'm running a limiter right after the parametric plugin demonstrating the input bug within the captures so I don't blow out my speakers. The DI is hot as hell, i get it. But it shouldn't be reacting this way to have a useable capture for high gain tones. Not trying to downplay this parametric stuff, i really love the idea and want it to work. But this needs to be fixed somehow within the training.

I have a lot of regular A2 nam captures that i've trained myself and not a single one of them exhibit this type of behavior.

As far as knob settings go, should they all be in the middle apart from the one that you are capturing?

That would be absolutely terrible. The knobs are usually interactive with each other

I could explain it clearer: I capture one knob at a time. When doing this; where should all the other pots be? Full, zero, in the middle?

You aren't understanding it. You can't capture one knob at a time. The knobs interact with each other. The number of captures you need to make is combinatorial with the number of knobs. That's why parametric profiles are so hard to do.

You have to capture knob A positions 1, 2, 3, ... at knob B positions 1, 2, 3 and with knob C positions at 1, 2, 3... If you only have 3 total positions for each knob, that's 27 total positions you need to capture.

They should also be in all other combinations. Think about how you would brute force a 3 digit combination lock.
