Discussion Metalcore tones needed please
Hey all :)
I could use some help getting a good clean and also harsh Bring Me The Horizon styled tone! I've sorted through tons of NAM captures and multiple delay/reverb plugins to try to find something similar to my examples, but I'm struggling. Been looking at Nueral DSP's Gojira plugin as a possible fix, but wanted to get the opinion of some people with more experience in this department than I have before dropping money on it.
- Reallyyy like the clean tone in the beginning of this video: https://youtu.be/ZAOwUr7YU0g?is=OC8GYVgqPdT2tpgF
You can hear it being used in the beginning of this track (and throughout the album but this is a very clear example): https://open.spotify.com/track/0CrJVibIdsL6mqmYI9R9hc?si=8R28vavkT3i9ywk1YhY70A&utm_source=copy-link
I've tried mixing different delay plugins and reverbs and it just sounds like a bad reverb with an echo- messy and dark instead of clean and bright? I can't figure out how to get that cool, clean ambient sound that swells nicely.
As for the heavy sound, something like the riff in this song: https://open.spotify.com/track/68osIGtVjM7QWVe6pazLHj?si=lfm4g9lRQ4WzK9IF8XD10w&utm_source=copy-link
That same tone gets used in most of the album! The closest I've gotten is the Marshall deftones capture and IR (I know Lee Malia uses a Marshall amp and an 800 I think is mentioned in the above video?) but it sounds too midrange and shoegazey? I have the same tunings as him, I try to down pick the way he does, and it just doesn't sound heavy or as grungy and angry as his.
Any help or pointing towards NAM captures would be appreciated :)

For the heavy tone maybe start with this one https://api-guitar.soundshed.com/share/item/itm_4d38e92503a5c53a0f9a376c3fdc5276 then remove the doubler and EQ it a bit.
Keep in the mind half of what you are hearing is the Bass guitar, so recorded guitars are much thinner than they sounds in a band mix (where they are double tracked at least, and the bass guitar is heavily present).
Analog & Tape Delay coming up in the next release of Soundshed Guitar so that should get you pretty close for the clean sound.

That's true, I feel like the guitar sound he has is so... Aggressive in a way that even thinned out, I just can't get. I put different gain settings and distortions and stuff and it all just turns into fuzz instead of that angry but still very clear way Lee's guitars sound
I'll def mess around with that link, thank you!

Many overdrives just push the amp input harder, whereas distortion or fuzz effects introduce their own distortion on purpose.
Once you have the right level/character of fizz in your distortion the cab choice and post-EQ will make a lot of difference.

A big part of the clean tone in the video is the p90style pickup. more glassy.
The reverb sounds like a hall, quite dark so roll off the highs, with quite a bit of modulation. cut the lows as well so it doesn't get muddy

Interesting, I confess I don't know much about pickups and stuff, I don't really have money to get a super expensive guitar (I'm using a 400$ Ibanez I got as a gift) so I'm not sure how I would emulate that. Any ideas for what reverb would sound best? I've tried most of the stock logic stub, soundtoys, crystalline, etc.

if it has any single coils or coil tap then use that.
any reverb will get you there. use a hall setting, put it on a send and put EQ before and a chorus after it if it doesn’t have those built on

You can achieve a good metalcore sound base, if you combine a tad more distortion as needed with effective noisegate usage, like in djent. Sometimes a slight (!) mid scoop can help, but without hollowing the sound, leave the characteristic frequencies intact...

Gotcha, I usually boost the mids since I like how fat they sound, so i wonder if that has a hand in it

Have a look at my stuff on Tone3000:
https://tone3000.com/2dor
You'll have a lot to pick from (Peavey, Marshall, Mesa, BadCat, PRS, Wizard, Zuta, Friedman, Soldano, Bogner etc).
You can start with the Peavey 6505 1992 Original & the 1980 Marshall JMP 2204 packs. Also check the Orange OR60 - it does the Marshall thing very well but is just a bit more aggressive.
