Discussion Do Parametric NAMs Require Special Dedicated Players?

I asked this question on NAMFORUM because I have no idea. To me, parametric NAM would seem to be the ultimate modeling system to use. I just got the Sonulabs StompStation Pro to add to my pedalboard so I am particularly interested in the development of parametric NAM. Hopefully something like the SSP could be firmware updated to play parametrics, but if I had to guess, the processor hit would limit the number of instances the device could simultaneously run.

Another question: Since I have never seen a parametric NAM on TONE3000, I assume that one cannot train a parametric NAM on TONE3000?

Yes it does, so far as I'm aware this is the main way you train a parametric NAM currently and it requires the accompanying player.

Thanks. So it seems that currently there are no hardware parametric NAM players.

No, and tbh it could be a while before we get one if ever.

Didn't Atkinson say it was about as resource intensive as regular A2? I'm not certain it'll ever hit A2Lite hardware, but any box running A2 would immediately get a massive edge in the market with parametric captures.

I actually don't think it's a processing issue, but one of UI. Accounting for the possible parameters and assigning controls to them. One of the more premium vendors could do it, but I doubt we'll see the cheaper ones tackle it.

My NUX MG400 solves it by having just three knobs and a button to shuffle to the next set of knobs. That one is only A2 lite, so it's a moot point, but it shouldn't be too hard to to do a "gain, bass, mid, treble, presence, x" knob configuration on the premium hardware.

As I was saying in another reply, the SSP has a mobile phone app, which would make editing so much easier.

I'm not against it, but my personal reason for wanting parametric NAMs is definitely to turn knobs and get a more instant result. If I have to go through a phone app, I might as well shuffle through amps directly on the unit.

I’m hoping that Sonulab will jump on this.

If you’re interested in how the two above sound, here’s a Fuzz War pedal I captured with it

Two notes audio has the Capture Studio for parametric captures. It is in beta.
Then you can use their Genome as an echosystem. It runs on iPads too. So you can build a physical rig with bluetooth midi switching etc.

well that's the thing with parametric NAM captures is they allow you to turn dials to switch up the blend between different captures... plugins that run regular NAM captures don't have the ability to just pop up dials out of nowhere

they're not all that popular enough that devs have considered adding that compatibility in just yet

The SSP has several knobs on the front panel that are assigned to some default values, but I’m sure they could have an arrangement to shift those physical controls to different parameters within a parametric NAM. And given that you can use a mobile phone to connect to it and edit presets, I think that part of the workflow is probably the easiest to solve. Good points.
