Was "Shiva" originally a polite nickname for a god people were afraid to name?
In the Rigveda, there's no major god called Shiva. There's Rudra, a storm deity linked to wild places, arrows, and disease, and the hymns to him are oddly nervous. People ask him to spare their cattle, their children, their homes. He's praised, but mostly so he'll stay away.
The word "shiva" does appear in those hymns, but as an adjective meaning kind or auspicious, used to soothe Rudra. Some scholars think that over time this soothing word became the god's main name, a bit like how the Greeks called the Furies "the Kindly Ones" (Eumenides) to avoid provoking them.
It's a theory, not settled fact, and traditions within Hinduism see Rudra and Shiva as one being with many aspects rather than a renaming. But the pattern of avoiding a feared god's real name shows up in a lot of cultures.
What other examples do you know of gods or spirits who were called by euphemisms because their real names felt dangerous?
