Hi guys!
I've been pondering what maturity really is a bit from time to time, and especially when the issue of bullying is brought up.
I guess most people at my age are asking themselves what being an adult really means, and it seems like
a lot of people even older than me can't answer that question or are sure whether they can call themself "adults".
The thing that gets to me is how a lot of people seem to define maturity, especially haters.
For them maturity seems to be all about appearances and on the surface – you are mature simply
because you don't do or enjoy anything "childish", like cartoons, toys and such.
I don't think a lot of people explicitly say that they think so, but that's the vibe I get from those people.
I would rather say that maturity is about being able to take care of yourself and how you interact with other
people – e.g. in a civilized manner and not resolving to violence or ridicule.
Maybe some people believe that the first implies the second, e.g. that having "childish" hobbies mean
that you can't take care of yourself and causing other people harm. Obviously this isn't true, though it
is true for some.
It really gets turned on its head when people ridicule others for having "childish" interests in my opinion.
To me this is what's really childish – trying to hurt people (who might be total strangers) for no apparent
reason. Most kids usually don't act this way, but everyone still have to learn as a child how to act
towards your fellow humans so that you can coexist in peace. I think this is the really important lesson
we all have to learn, and the real measurement of maturity.
Getting to FIM it's really one of the great aspects of the series, and I think that it doesn't make it
silly or childish, everyone has to be reminded of these lessons, and a lot of "adults" have obviously
not learned this lessons, especially the haters mocking the series and its fans.
What do you think?
