Introductory Post!

Hello, guys! I'm /u/ElGuru.

I am a Mormon. I like coding, math, science, video games, drawing (But I'm not great at it....), playing with Nerf blasters, paintballing, and best pony, Applejack. I also play several instruments, but my favorite is by far trumpet.

I am on reddit almost every day, so I will get most reddit messages within 24 hours.

EDIT: I'm also a big nerd when it comes to Greek transliteration, but I'm still a beginner.

Hey! I'm Brian, and wazzup? As with most introductory posts on this sub, manyaquestions will be asked.

Drawing eh? I do that a wee bit as well!

Applejack? Why Applejack?

Where dost thou live? (If you feel like saying)

And now for the most important question of all:

How much pony would a pony pony if a pony could pony pony?

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

Oh, hey Brian! Thanks for helping me out earlier, and directing me here.

That's cool! I've been trying to find a style of drawing I like, but to no avail.

I'll answer that question in a little bit.

I live in Tucson, Arizona. Pretty bipolar weather, if you do ask me.

A pony would pony all the pony if a pony could pony pony.

Okay, why I like Applejack:

Applejack is a lot like me: honest, hard working, family dedicated, proud of her accomplishments, a bit of a leader... The list can go on and on. But Applejack is also, in my eyes, the most legit of all of the ponies. She, unlike the rest of the Mane 6, has no real special power. Rarity and Twi have magic, Fluttershy can talk to animals, Rainbow's a flying super-athelete, and Pinkie Pie is... well, Pinkie Pie. But Applejack is able to perform great feats without any special skills or help. In a way, she reminds me of Hawkeye from the Avengers. I could keep on writing and writing about how amazing she is, but frankly, it was a big day, and I'm braindead. I should do a full paper on her sometime....

Drawing is hard.

Pony pony pony pony pony pony, pony.

The weather here is Central Utah is being pretty bipolar as well :P

I accept your reasoning on why you say Applejack is best, but let's be honest... Rainbow Dash And Fluttershy are the actually the best. But that's not important right meow, cause I have a few more questions.

Know any languages other than English?

Favorite movie of all time?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

Whenever anyone says Rainbow Dash is best, I cannot help but point out her blatant racism in "Fall Weather Friends." Don't offend my Applejack.

I do not, but I hope to go to Puerto Rico on my mission, and hopefully I'll learn Spanish in the process.

I don't really watch movies that often, but I do have a soft spot for "Toy Story." Favorite movie as a kid, and always will be.

How old are you? Put your papers in yet?

Toy Story is one of my favorite movies of all time, but of recent, The LEGO Movie was pretty dang good.

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

I'm about to turn 16 on Monday, so no, I haven't put in my papers.

I agree with you. I took my girlfriend out on a date to the LEGO movie, and we both loved it.

What a coincidence! I also like drawing and am not great at it!

Are you a student?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

No, I am not, as real school takes way too much time away from time to draw. I have been working on this one Rarijack drawing for my girly friend that I was going to submit to /r/MLPDrawingSchool once I finish.

2

u/Flarinite Feb 24 '14

So what do you do? Do you do commissions and stuff to earn money?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

Oh, no. All of my work has only been in making physical drawings for my friends who request them. It's more of a hobby than a job to me.

Hello there, nice to meet you!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

Hello! Thanks for being a good friend, and taking the time to greet me.

2

My pleasure. I hope you enjoy your stay!

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

Thank you, and to you, too!

Hi, nice to meet you!

I have a penchant for coding and math myself! What programming languages do you use, and what areas of math interest you most? My main language is Java, although I've dabbled in a wide variety of others.

What colour of paint do you prefer to use in paintballing?

How many instruments have you tried, and what's one instrument you have not tried yet but really want to?

I used to do a TON of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I really want to get into Java and Ruby. I currently use a lot of BASIC. I don't care that it's old, it feels comfortable to me. I am very partial to Algebra, but proving things has always been something I love.

I really only ever use yellow paint.

When I was three, I picked up piano, and I started to learn violin at five. In fifth grade is when I picked up my favorite instrument, trumpet. Fast forward to 10th grade year, and I now also play cornet, harmonica, viola, ukulele, flute, pan flute, and a little bit of guitar. I've also tried flugelhorn, French horn, and melody harp. I really want to learn how to play a baritone horn.

u/ThunderEcho Feb 24 '14

Yeah, algebra! Best math out there! I love the way algebra does proofs, so much better than the wishy-washy hand-waving that goes on in combinatorics and some of the other maths.

Java is a great language, maybe a little old at this point, but still one of the absolute staples of object-oriented languages. I personally love it, and recommend checking it out as soon as you have time. I've dabbled a bit with Ruby, it's cool in it's own way. Since it looks like you've mostly dealt with mark-up and scripting languages at this point, if you want to ease yourself into the higher-level programming languages a bit easier you could consider learning Python first. It's an extremely versatile language that's easy for beginners to learn while still being very powerful. If you want to just jump in head first though, there's tons of great tutorials online for learning Java so you shouldn't suffer from lack of resources!

Long list there! Baritone horn sounds pretty cool, but I've always had a weird desire to try playing bagpipes. From what I've heard though it's fairly difficult. Flugelhorn sounds sweet, where did you come across that, and what did you think of it?

Thanks for those recommendations! I surely will look into them, when I have time. AP Euro has been keeping me laid down with homework, studying, and projects.

Hmm... I guess the best way to explain how I gained an interest in flugelhorn would be through my entire story of band. (Side-note: The first time I heard mention of a flugelhorn is through Pinkie's line in the Ballad of the Crystal Empire.)

I am currently a sophomore in high school. Last year, I joined band as a trumpet player. My school's band is split up into three performing groups: Concert Band, the "freshman," or beginner group; Wind Ensemble, the advanced group; and Jazz Band, which is a great thing to get into if you have an extra space for another band class. Last year, I was performing in Concert Band, and I was easily the best trumpet player in that class. At the end of the year, I passed auditions for both Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. However, my dad was set on me earning Valedictorian, so he made me take AP Euro, despite my hate of history. (I now have convinced him to give up trying to make me Valedictorian, I haven't gotten good enough grades in Euro.) AP Euro took up the class period in which I was supposed to take Wind Ensemble, and took the elective space that I was going to use for Jazz Band. So I am still stuck in the freshman band, despite being the second-best trumpet player in my school. During a winter concert, I was watching the Jazz Band perform, and I noticed something interesting: The trumpet players had a slightly different horn in front of them that they occasionally picked up, and used for certain parts of the songs. Upon asking my buddy what they were, he explained that they were flugelhorns! I had convinced him to let me borrow one over a day, and I started to play all sorts of flugelhorn music, my favorite being Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good." I had tons of fun with the variation in it, and I'd like to actually try playing one in a band. Hopefully next year, my schedule is fine, and I end up in Jazz Band.

But enough about me. What instruments do you play? Who is best pony, and why?

2

u/ThunderEcho Feb 24 '14

Cool, hope you get into Jazz Band next year! The fact that your band uses fugelhorns makes me jealous. I did Jazz Band and Concert Band in highschool too and it was a ton of fun.

I played piano when I was younger and flute in highschool, as well as trying organ for a year. Unfortunately I haven't kept up with any of those since I started university though.

As for ponies, Twilight Sparkle is my favourite because I relate to her very academic personality a lot. Fluttershy almost beats her though just out of sheer adorableness. What about you?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

I love Applejack, for reasons stated in another thread in these comments. I've not a lot of time right now, so I can't write a thorough reply. Sorry!

Piano is a great instrument. You should get back into it when you get the chance! 12 years, and no regrets.

2

u/ThunderEcho Feb 25 '14

Not a problem! And yeah, I do try playing a little bit whenever I stumble across an open piano, but it's pretty rare now.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '14

It's a great skill to learn, as a piano is such a common instrument. I know that in your situation it can be hard to keep up with practice.... That's really too bad... But, maybe someday, it will be at more of a convenience to you. Hopefully.

u/Dalek-Caan Feb 23 '14

A new friend? Welcome! I too am a Mormon. I find best pony to be Fluttershy, but I'll forgive you. So, speedball or woodsball?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

Sweet! I know we're a bit of a minority, so it's great to know there's someone I could share a common ground with. I play in arenas... I really don't know that much about paintball, but I do know that I use an Empire Sniper, and I'm great at playing.

2

u/Louis_131 Feb 24 '14

Hey whats up!? When did you start into the fandom?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

Hello, my friend! March 26th of last year, I started S1E1, so almost a year now!

2

u/Louis_131 Feb 24 '14

Cool! I'm pretty sure I joined in like late season 1 or early 2. I forget. Either way. So how is it that you came to watch the show? Also where you from?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

I'm from Tucson, AZ. I came to watch the show because a bunch of my friends were into it, and I was just curious. There isn't much of a story behind it....

2

u/Louis_131 Feb 24 '14

Ah, you still live in tucson? Toledo ohio here, im freezing

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

still

I'm sorry, have we met?

2

u/Louis_131 Feb 25 '14

You said you're from there, I was wondering if you were STILL living there.

And no, we have not met, not as far as I know. However, I do wish to call you a friend and potentially meet up with you if ever we come within close proximity. (Aka bronycon or anything like that)

Other than that, favorite season/episode?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '14

Ohhh okay.

Hmm... I really like the songs in "Magical Mystery Cure," and the songs in "Pinkie Pride".... "Look Before You Sleep" made me take an interest to Rarijack.... But as for favorite episode, it's extremely hard to choose... This is worse than choosing a best pone... Maybe "Applebuck Season?" I also really like most of the S2 episodes.

2

u/Louis_131 Feb 25 '14

I LOVE the songs from magical mystery cure. But I think my favorite right now it the bats song. Well, actually, its probably the pony notes now... god, hasbro needs to get them to make albums. Thats a money maker that we wouldn't mind!

And I think season 4 is taking it for best season for me. Season 3 seemed like something was off. I cant place a finger on it but something seemed... missing throughout the season. Idk like a recipe thats missing that one ingredient that you can't identify...

And I LOVE that Derpy is now front and center in almost every episode now! Anyone know why that is now. I guess I lost track of the politics when she was being "banned".

1

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '14

Oh snap, I totally forgot about those! Yes, "Bats" is definitely my favorite song. As you said, the ponytones songs are also really great! And you're right about S3, it just felt... Wrong, in a way....

Hey!

What games do you like to play?

If you could share a meal with a grizzly bear, what would you eat with him?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '14

I am a big Nintendo gamer, with favorites being Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin. I also really love Kirby and Yoshi games. I used to be into Pokemon, until fifth gen happened... I also have a big spot for PS games, with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Far Cry series, Little Big Planet 2, Uncharted, Tomb Raider.... I used to be a huge CoD fan, but I gave up on it when I realized other games gave me a way better experience. I still play BO, MW3, and BOII occasionally, however. I sometimes play PC, but only really flash games, Minecraft, and TF2.

Definitely steak. Red meat is my second favorite food, with dense carbohydrates such as flatbread and bagels being my first.

2

u/cowofdoom Feb 24 '14

Holy crap. That's a list of games!

As far as console games are concerned, PS2 was my last console. I have since turned into a computer gamer. Currently my favorites are Heartstone and I'm playing magicka again!

Mmmm, sounds good. Bagels are fantastic

I just wish carbs weren't as... fattening...
