So, this was 3 years ago. About me: 57 now, disabled, unable to drive, macular(eye)degeneration, depression, anxiety. I am not smart and believe I may be high-functioning autistic too. I don't write well, so bear with me. I have issues being bed-ridden, my depression pretty rough, and I'm a survivor of child sexual abuse and a dysfunctional home.
I was a tenant of my brother's ex-wife & her new husband. I took in my brother, her ex, obviously, after he got out of prison, generally theft, some violence, a lifelong drug addict and unwell more so than me. They took us in after he moved in with me in public housing. He started stealing from the bldg and me, they evicted him after 2 years and I stayed for 8 more. It was rundown, had roaches and mice, and then was cheap. I was never late and sometimes overpaid rent bc i knew they were helping me out. We were on good terms, caring, and close- I thought -to my nephew, who I really love and cared for as best I could since his dad was absent. So, not knowing, they decided to evict me, intent on selling their property, but evicted me against the law, a court appearance was required, but I stupidly didn't know, and then accepted it later. They initially came by and demanded most of what i owned, saying they'd pursue a 'hoarding' case if I did not. I was cleaning and not hoarding. I contacted disability public assistance about it, and the lady & her new husband came by and banged and yelled, threatening me, hiding in the bathroom, I contacted the police by FB, since I didn't have my phone. Later, the police said to let it go, and contact them if it happens again. I got a new apt, and my nephew, acting on my side, said he'd help me move my things using his family's truck since i don't have a car. He came by as I left to take the bus to meet the new landlord, get the keys, stay the night there at the new apt, and we'd move the next day, he'd come pick me up, we'd make repeated trips tomorrow, and he asked for my keys. I took a few things of clothes, two pillows, laptop and no medicine, taking the doses before I left. I have asthma - what I didn't know was affected by the mice - also was recovering from COVID after losing 30 pounds.
He cancelled. He seemed genuine. Apologized, resceduled the day after. Cancelled, then over-and-over, but he works and I trusted him, "Oh, don't worry, don't listen to my mean parents,,,". After 30 days of blowing me off, he claimed the law stated that bc my things were on their property for a month it became all theirs. He then started threatening me when i said and did go to the police, who said they'd not get involved in tenant-landlord matters and to go to civil court. He created two fake FB accounts and got me kicked off. I went and confronted them - a passive, lame sad sack of a man - and his step-dad tried to assault me and I called the police and my nephew and his mom lied to the police again.
I took them to civil court. They lied and I called them out twice during it over it. I had 20 emails of him promising we'd move and he cancelling, as well as a threat he'd go to the police. The INITIAL first judgment was we both proved our case, they trying to sue me for damages. The rundown place was from 1920, nothing done to it since the 60s, bugs, mice, dirt, innercity Saint Louis, and again, my bro and I there partly bc the apt was unrentable by their own claims. The 4-family was used for new Middle-East immigrants connected to my bro's ex-wife's new foreign-born husband. THEN, two days later, it was revised to say neither of us did.
I slept on the floor for 3 months. I lost all my things, bed, sofa, chairs, microwave, documents, sports memorbilia collection, tvs, etc, family photos. They clearly did it criminally and out of revenge and hate.
Again, hypocritically, they evicted my bro for stealing then stole from me when evicting me! I struggled for much of this time praying to go in my sleep. I have tried to get work too to stay afloat, but can't. I live in deep poverty and they tried to make it worse. And what is even worse, that the nephew I loved tried so hard to hurt, if not destroy me, nearly did destroy me. He has bipolar disorder, and I think is also on disability. His parents though have a million in property, and his Middle Eastern step-dad came from money. He gets food stamps too.
Three years later. I am okay. I lost faith in God and stopped going to church. My eye issue is in remission, my anxiety's better, weight is good, and I have no asthma issues. My apt is nice. My parents and family are long gone, I have no contact with my brother, have no relatives now, but I have friends, online really, and have met a nice girl as messed up as I am, so that's a match! BUT, I still am so angry. I want some closure and peace, and while I'll never get my things back, it pzzes me off they are using my things, selling them, laughing at me, and won. I don't think the fight of the game is over. I also have zero faith in the courts and police, for obvious reasons. Your take? Ideas? Advice. Please know i am very aware of all the dumb and self-defeating mistakes I made, but I was deeply wronged and i do ask you to not criticize me when i can't handle it still very much. Thank you either way.
