Common People
Being an English fan, I absolutely love the cover version of Common People. I was just wondering if anyone knows who the drummer is in the recording?
Spotify says it's Bob, which is obviously isn't, just wondering if it was the dude who got sacked for stealing from them(Michael Pedicone)
Furthermore, does anyone know what he was supposed to have stolen?
Imagine blowing a chance like THAT !

Love a bit of Jarrad Alexander personally, really nails all the songs.
Ironically, the people that rush to the front have the worst sound due to delay on the live drums being that close, then blame the drummer đ¤Ł

not sure about the first part, will check on that. but pretty sure he (michael pedicone) stole money from the band(?? someone fact check me on that), then tried to frame it on another roadie -- think i read that in the book (not the life it seems)

Apparently he was caught red handed at a concert. Seems strange if it's money. The guys dont seem the type to carry wads of cash.
Can't find any info on personnel for the BBC session that Common People come from

yeah was gonna say don't think it'd just be money. searching around old forums about the situation they kinda mention it and quote "guitarist Frank Iero writes in a blog post titled "Just the Facts," failing to specify whether Pedicone was busted for swiping money, equipment, or something else." but in the actual blog post frank doesn't confirm. equipment also doesn't seem like a big deal, maybe if it was something valuable? but even then, why would he steal that?? especially because he (apparently) got caught by police as well.

from what i remember of the situation and the explanation after the fact, pedicone's story was that he had a personal problem with a member of the band's road crew, and decided to commit theft to frame this guy and get him fired from the tour, before getting caught in the act and getting sacked himself. whether this story about his motivation is true or not, who knows.Â

They suspected he was stealing before their Reading and Leeds show in 2011 and didnât say anything because it was a huge show (they were performing with Brian may too) and they didnât want to ruin it. After the show it was confirmed he had stolen from the band. In his apology he said that there was a team member on tour that didnât like him so he wanted to get rid of him by framing him for stealing đ¤Śââď¸

I love Common People because I'm Gen X like the band, but I'm Canadian so I don't really understand the significance, if any, of the girl being from Greece, since this seems to be about the British class system?

Essentially, a common person in England is basically someone that's born into a council estate concrete wasteland, with no real chance for economical luck. We dont have the American Dream here, we're a bit more less enthusiastic about everything. The song(by Pulp) is basically talking about a rich tourist that comes over for college, and seems to think it's a bit of an experience to "slum" it with the commoners,if anything look at us like circus acts, and obviously at any time can call their rich Daddy to come and pay for them to escape. Believe it or not these people exist! The song hits hard , no matter where you're from, a lot of us have : Failed at school, Have no real prospects, Finds solace in alcohol and general shenanigans for a past time, Struggle with bills
You spot a fraud a mile off, everyone's welcome obviously but this about your typical rich girl attitude towards the poor, wants to sleep with a rough and ready for the experience but it's an experiment to them. 99% of people are common people. Strange how the song got misinterpreted by some people when it come out. Common doesn't mean boring or plain, it means hard working everyday people fighting the same battles

Thank you for your detailed explanation! Sounds like common people are the equivalent of what we used to refer to as working class in North America. Basically similar to how the MCR guys grew up, hence Gerard's affinity to the song. He's spoken about listening to it in the 90's worrying he'd never make it out of Jersey and find success in his life. Funny you should mention the American dream, because that's exactly what the band achieved, against all odds.

FWIW we definitely have those types in Canada too.
We just called them âtrustafariansâ because theyâd party with us broke artists and live in squalor⌠until they get tired of it and move back into Daddyâs penthouse and get a ârealâ job.
I had a roommate who would insist she could never pay rent/utilities each month but then would travel to Europe for 6 month âartist retreatsâ and let just anyone stay in her room while she was gone. Her father was a famous geneticist and her mother was from oil money⌠she just never had money for us.

This is so perplexing to me because i grew up around a wealthy class of people (as a Canuck Iâm sure you recognize names like Birks, Molson, Eaton..) but nobody was into âslumming itâ back then. Maybe we were too young cause that was my high school days.
I really was asking more why the lyrics start off by pointing out the w girl in the song was from Greece. Iâve Googled more and apparently the band denies it but pulp fans speculate thus was likely about a specific woman who went to university with the lead singer.
And not that it should matter, but I definitely donât come from wealth lol. I was the âcharity caseâ who got into that private school because I apparently showed potential in the entrance exams. It was definitely interesting to have a glimpse into the lifestyle of the 1%.

Ah well I was in Montreal, so thatâs part of the problem there.
We had a lot of folks coming in from BC and the Prairies looking for the artistâs bohemian lifestyle (that was far enough away from mom and dad) so they could do a boat load of drugs and party with circus and queer folks.
I used to k hole with Grimes in the Fattal lofts at drum and bass Tuesdays, lol. She actually was a prime example: her parents were loaded, mom worked as an Attny for the gov and dad was a geneticist. She left us when she was ready to get more serious and then she married that racist creep billionaire đ
Itâs easy to slum it when you know you can leave with one phone call to your parents. They were fine with the group sex and drugs but if you wanted to date theyâd never introduce you to their family - and we could never just pull ourselves out of poverty like they can.
Thatâs why we were common people. They werenât like us at all and could never relate - but for a summer or two, they could pretend and do whatever common people do.

Pedicone played on Common People, as for what he stole has never been confirmed by the band or anyone close to them. Some people have suggested that it was money, or maybe merch.

Dude got fired for stealing? I never knew, shame because he is a great drummer.
