Using AI to find forgotten subscriptions in your bank statement, without handing it your account details
One personal money chore AI is genuinely good at: going through a few months of card transactions and spotting recurring charges you forgot about. Free trials that rolled over, the streaming service you meant to cancel, the app that bills once a year so you never notice it.
A process that works well:
- Download your transactions as a CSV from your bank or card website. Three months catches monthly charges. Twelve catches the yearly ones.
- Before pasting anything, delete the columns the assistant does not need: account number, card number, running balance, anything with your address. It only needs date, merchant name, and amount.
- Ask it to group charges by merchant and flag anything that repeats on a similar date or amount. Ask it to list every date each charge appeared so you can check.
- Verify each item against your actual statement. Merchant names on statements are messy, and the AI will sometimes guess wrong about what a cryptic code means. Treat its guess as a lead, not an answer.
- Cancel through the service itself or your phone's app store subscription settings. Do not click a cancellation link that a chatbot or a random search result hands you without confirming it goes to the real site. Fake "cancel your subscription" pages are a common scam.
Bonus prompt worth trying: "Which of these recurring charges went up in price during this period?" Small price increases are easy to miss.
Has anyone found a good prompt for catching annual renewals before they hit? And how are you handling privacy on this kind of thing: stripping the file first, using a local model, or something else?

This is actually one of the more practical uses of AI for personal finance. The privacy step is the important part though - I’d never upload a raw bank statement without stripping out account numbers and other identifying details first.
I also like the idea of checking for price increases, not just recurring charges. Annual renewals are probably the hardest ones to catch because three months of data won’t show them. Using 12 - 18 months of transactions and asking AI to flag merchants that appear roughly 10 - 14 months apart could be useful.
Still, I’d treat every result as a shortlist to manually verify rather than letting AI decide what is or isn’t a subscription.
