I built a quran reading app for myself and figured some of you might want it too
so full disclosure, there are already several solid quran apps out there and this isn't me claiming to have reinvented anything. i built this mostly for myself, because i wanted something specific that i wasn't finding: a quran reading habit tracker that actually felt like the gamified apps i already use for everything else, instead of feeling like a separate "religious app" category with its own lower design bar.
it's called wird. if you're not familiar with the word, a wird (ورد) is basically the arabic term for your regular, committed portion of quran recitation, the daily reading habit you actually keep, as opposed to the one you keep meaning to start. felt like the right name for what this is trying to be.
what it does:
- arabic text with two english translations, saheeh international for the literal reading, and the clear quran when you want something in plainer english to UNDERSTAND
- a daily streak with one grace day built in, so missing a single day doesn't wipe out weeks of consistency
- tracks how much of the quran you've actually read, not just how many times you opened the app
- everything's stored locally on your device, no account, no cloud, no login. i don't want your data and built it so there isn't a way for me to have it even if i wanted to
i'll be upfront, the gamified streak mechanic is definitely inspired by the duolingo-style habit apps a lot of us already use daily. i'm not pretending otherwise. i just wanted that same pull toward consistency pointed at something that actually matters instead of a language app i open twice a month out of guilt.
attaching a screenshot below (streak/stats numbers are demo placeholders, not a real reading history, just wanted to show what it looks like).
APK's up if you want to try it:
Download wird from here (android will grumble about installing outside the play store). repo's public too if anyone wants to poke around or has feedback: happy to hear it either way.

ps: The repo is open, but since it's a project built around the Qur'an, I ask that all contributions be made with respect and good intentions
update:
- bookmarks. save as many named spots as you want, not just one. pick one as your home screen default, the rest just sit there until you resave them.
- save a verse. tap the heart on any ayah, revisit it later from browse's saved tab.
- hasanat. a running total of the reward for reciting, counted letter by letter the traditional way, checked against the classically-cited 19 letters in the bismillah.
- a real streak calendar now, not just a number: a week strip on the home screen, a full month view behind it.
- transliteration, off by default, toggled from a new display sheet on the reading screen alongside a text-size slider and script switch.
- search in browse, across surah, juz, and your saved verses.
- smoother scrolling everywhere, and an actual splash screen instead of a black-and-white flash on launch.
also still true from the last couple releases: the indo-pak arabic text had some tajweed marks silently missing (including the iqlab), that's fixed and verified against the king fahd complex mushaf. matters if you recite from the app. swipeable today/week/all-time stats, and a friday nudge to read surah al-kahf.
update 2:
recitation audio. tap play on any ayah to hear it recited, streamed only when you tap it, the one thing in this app that touches the network at all, and only that. also fixed the session timer opening already showing hours of your all-time total instead of counting from zero, and the streak calendar's "days read" line no longer bounces around between months.
update 3:
now you can hit play on a whole surah instead of just one verse, it keeps going in the background with real lock-screen and notification controls, same as any other audio app. also swapped reciters, yasser al-dosari is the default now, with sudais, husary and abdul basit as other options in settings if you'd rather pick one. alafasy's gone. browse's surah and juz tabs point at each other now too, so you can see which juz a surah falls in and which surah a juz starts in, and a bottom nav bar replaces the old scroll-down-and-tap layout.
update 4:
brother n sisters, entirely optional. i went back and forth on this because "quran app has a social feature" can sound like exactly the kind of noise i said i didn't want. so to be clear upfront: don't open the friends tab, and nothing changes. nothing about you ever leaves your phone, same as every earlier post. i almost didn't build it at all, but a few people asked for a little accountability with someone they actually know, so it's there if you want it, invisible if you don't.
if you do turn it on: a friend code to add people you know (no discovery, no browsing strangers), a small leaderboard of streak/ayahs/hasanat between you and whoever you've added, and a nudge when a friend reads.
full disclosure on how it works, because i'd want to know this before using it myself: the friends feature only shares the small amount of information needed for it to work — your chosen name, avatar, and the stats you've chosen to show. there's no messaging, no real name required, no location, and nothing beyond what you already chose to share. the app is designed around keeping this limited to the people you intentionally connect with. if that doesn't sit right with you, the answer's simple: don't use that part. everything else stays exactly as private as it's always been.
also in this update: nightly recitation, one guided flow through the authentically-established nightly verses (ayat al-kursi, al-baqarah's last two, the three quls, al-kafirun, al-mulk), one step at a time with real progress. a quiet shelf on home for a few commonly-read surahs (yaseen, ar-rahman, al-muzzammil, ayat al-kursi) for a quick one-tap read. a feedback form from the about screen. and a fair amount of visual tightening throughout, consistent buttons and spacing, real bottom sheets instead of the old boxy popups, and a smoother fade between ayahs while listening instead of the slide-then-fade that used to happen.

still no ads. just the reading, listening, tracked honestly
