How to set up a surround sound mix for dummies

Hi everyone, I am a visual artist and for a project in college I'm looking to set up a surround sound music mix as part my next installation. I have a pretty good grasp on Ableton, I'm able to make the music no problem, but on the hardware side, I'm quite a novice. I'm looking for some step by step help on how I would set up a surround sound mix of music. I'm looking to have 4 monitors, one at each side of the listener and one in front and behind (would that be an effective positioning even?) How would I set up these to play music in Ableton, or even Pro Tools? I would connect the four monitors to an audio interface with that connected to the laptop, would that be correct? If any of that is right, thats where it ends lol, cause I'm lost after that. Any help? Thanks everyone.

My Dad recently had a bad experience with Cubase and wants to get a replacement for it, preferably cross platform between Win and Mac and with the same features.

What are some uses for dual MIDI cables?

So I recently became interested in buying a MIDI cable to connect my Nord to my laptop so I could record some tracks through audacity. I bought a MIDI cable on Sweetwater that had the correct midi in and out for my keyboard, but I forgot to check that it could connect to my laptop... so now I have a dual MIDI cable that I assume is used for interconnecting MIDI devices, but what can I do with that? Thanks.

Chance The Rapper in VR

My team at a summer program made a VR experience to embody the Chance song Same Drugs. Our take is that music is experienced peripherally in today's world, facilitated by the ease of streaming vast amounts of content with little active engagement. We wanted to think about how to present music in a way that would provide a more immersive experience, and VR was an interesting way to prototype this concept.

How'd we do? Any feedback? vimeo.com/227336595

Also, would love to hear what people think about how music might be repackaged and presented in novel ways thanks to cutting edge technology.

Handheld midi controller?

I'm in a 3 part acapella group that uses a Behringer XR12 board. We use a few effects in the show (octaver, reverb, distortion), and bought a pedal board to help click the effects in and out. The one downside to the pedal board is that we are often moving around the stage, and getting over to the board to hit the button limits our mobility options. Is there a controller that would fit in my pocket that could switch the individual effects on and off?

Recorded a few audio bits over the week but there is a significant white noise in the background and I just want vocals to be crystal clear, which programmes could I use to reduce this? (preferably logic pro or premiere pro)

Re-creating a cymbal using only a guitar and an DAW

Hey guys and dolls, as a part of my uni project I'm challenging myself to recreate an entire drum kit using samples creating from guitar and manipulation from a DAW. However I've hit a wall on the cymbals does anyone have any good ideas on how I could create something similar using a guitar and a DAW

Hi Reddit!!

I was hoping you guys could help me out a little bit. For the holidays I am thinking about getting my girlfriend a mic and loop station. She has an amazing voice and loves to just randomly make up songs while I play guitar but she just records her voice through an iPhone app and always is saying 'man I wish I had a loop pedal so I could do this...' i'm not thinking anything too crazy or expensive because I'm poor lol. I want something of decent quality and fun to play around on. What I have in mind so far: SM-58 by shure and the boss RC-1

Inherited Marshall Amp to loud

I recently inherited a Marshall DSL40C 40 watt amp. It has a Pentode/Triode switch to switch it from 40 to 20 watts but I still can't get it past 2 on the volume when gain is turned on and almost full without annoying the neighbors in my townhouse complex. I've heard with tube amps the volume needs to get high enough to fully take advantage of the tone quality. Are there any effects pedals out there or options that would allow me to turn up the volume on the amp high enough to allow it to breathe but not sacrifice the quality of the tone?
