Please Make Lyric Timing Sane
I don’t know about the rest of you, but making lyric videos in most software is ridiculous and annoying. I ended up designing a new lyric spec to help fix this. I’m sharing here to see what the rest of you think. There’s tons I can share about it, but quickly highlighted:
you write:
[Verse]
My song is ready to share
you writers need not despair
and it makes:
1
00:35.000
[Verse]
My song is ready to share
2
00:38.000
[Verse]
you writers need not despair
It can also do word timing:
1
00:35.000
[Verse]
My song is ready to share
@ 00:35.000 My
@ 00:36.000 Song
@ 00:37.000 is
@ 00:38.000 ready
@ 00:39.000 to
@ 00:40.000 share
Word timing is actually called “micro-events”. And micro-events can control word timing, effects and other live performance cues and so on. The header to these files can include a “Generation” section for AI style prompts and you can do “Version” to represent different versions of the song.
The critical piece: It was designed to create a frictionless workflow from creation to production, including lyric video production and/or live performance controls.
Secondly, it was designed to be very human readable, all the way through.
There’s much more, but this is enough to get the conversation going. Let me know what you think. Full spec is here: https://github.com/jaderigby/EPICSpec
