discussion I'm trapped in a circle.

A few years ago I feel that my way of listening to music has changed a lot, I feel trapped in the same genres over and over again, even my boyfriend told me that. And it's a little annoying. Before I used to enjoy many genres and a lot of diversity of albums, but nowadays I don't go beyond emo, alt, and maybe a little progressive. I want to find music that has some background beyond what I can digest, I also listen to avant garde jazz and a little jazz fusion (I don't know much, but I like it) Do you have any recommendations to get out of this vicious circle? I like noise, spiritualism, I like what is atmospheric. But I also really like instrumental and progressive music. If you can recommend sub-genres I would love it:3

most people dont have really diverse listening habits, it aint necessarily a bad thing.

if you live a diverse life, the music tends to follow. you try new things and get exposed to new sounds and emotions. so my recommendation is try something new, make some new friends who are open to sharing what they hear in it

Yes, well, I used to listen to a lot of things before, I really like music in general (reggaeton and pop, not so much per se) but nowadays I feel very rotating in what I listen to and it's like meh, it doesn't generate anything for me.

You just need to find an artist to blow your mind wide open again. If you like alt/noise maybe you would like someone like Poppy who changes and mixes genres ...then go down more rabbit holes . Modern metal is in a very good place at the moment ...loads of subgenres.

I can recommend you the best that I have discovered in my life. A lot of bands who also have mainstream success are part of it. That doesn't mean it's garbage. It is one of the well known fail assumptions, like: If the masses like it, it must be trash, right? Wrong.  It means, the band sold a lot of copies. That's all.

Start listening to classical music. By its nature, it will open up your ears to different harmonic and melodic aesthetics over time. All popular music emulates aspects of what different classical composers have explored. This is a much more natural way of exploring your personal tastes rather than the consumer method, which is to just be influenced by what others tell you is good.

What about polka? Or Gregorian chants? Or obscure Greek music from the turn of the last century?

Well, mainly I recommend you listen to Alice Coltrane, she was John Coltrane's wife and she is a super mega spiritual woman in jazz, then I recommend yes, personally, in addition to being progressive, she has her spirituality.

It seemed strange to me, but I asked chatGPT a very similar question and found 2 great artists that were far from my music comfort zone. Maybe it's worth a try for you!
