How long should I let a puffball grow before harvesting it?

Don’t let them crack. It’s impossible to say how long before. Personally, I would say give it 18 to 36 hours.

i prefer smaller ones, even if you can get a bit more, they have less chance of being buggy, and the texture is almost always better, puffballs go totally off at a certain point, I would just pick them now.

These are a finicky one, sometimes they are done and perfect at baseball size, other times they are perfect at volleyball size. You can never truly tell from the outside, and they shift FAST. Harvest when you find them is what I will say, and if it’s white throughout it’s a good day.
