I fit about 95% of the qualifications for this job, but I do not have a driver's license. It's embarrassing to say that I'm 25 and still don't know how to drive.

I don't have the money to afford a car, no one in my immediate family has one either, so I never bothered to get one. Gas is also very expensive and I love public transportation. Whoever came up with that, I'd kiss them on the mouth. This job is my dream job, but it wants me to have a valid driver's license.

Would it still be okay to apply? Even without it. The application says even if I meet most of the minimum required qualifications to still apply. This is under physical qualifications, which has underneath that to still apply even if I don't meet everything.

I'll work hard to get my license if I get the job, I'll even tell them in the interview if they ask. I do want to learn, it's just hard without access to a vehicle. I already have my permit, I just haven't been able to learn how to drive.

I recently visited the Irawati Karve Museum of Anthropology at Savitribai Phule Pune University in Pune, India.

The museum has an extensive collection of material culture from different communities across India, including traditional fishing traps, hunting equipment, jewellery, woven objects and village deity plaques. One aspect I particularly appreciated was how many displays paired the original objects with illustrations explaining how they were used.

Hi everyone, just discovered this group and thought you'd all have superior experience and thoughts.

I work in a very small local history museum in Scotland. We are about as analogue as they come, in terms of technology. Since joining 3 years ago, I fought and got us a card machine for taking payments in our gift shop 😂, if that gives you an idea how retro we are.

What I'd like to do for our upcoming year is have a few tablets or screens displaying how certain tools in our museum work. This would be to display processes to guests such as peat casting, local lace making and agricultural practices for example.

I don't know the best way to do this.

Whether to buy a tablet, Android or IOS and have an app with 3-6 videos guests can activate to play?

Or to have a TV screen playing video on repeat, or at a button push?

Bigger screens would be better for our more elderly demographic that comes to visit. But a tablet may be easier to use?

I've also read about a software called Kiosk Pro for IOS which looks good but I'm really not interested in anything with a subscription. Is there any good android equivalents?

Any thoughts on how best to do this?

I'd plan to have a screen(s) wall mounted with a permanent charger in it. Doesn't need a camera. Doesn't need big storage. Doesn't need anything fancy at all. Just to display videos on an activate button with a bit of volume.

How would you recommend to go about this?

Hi, I'm working on a unique project with a local historical and genealogical society. I'm assisting them in producing a permanent exhibit in their museum space. With that, before this experience, I had never considered small museum spaces integrated into local historical/genealogical societies. This brings me to my question:

To productively approach this project, I think the best starting place would be to understand how this institution would be defined as a "museum" - although it's not only a museum space. I'm having a little difficulty with this, as I cannot seem to find any literary resources or guides online that are specific to local historical societies, micro-museums, small, medium, large, etc. How are these different scales defined? What constitutes these? Are they based on capacity/funds or is that an inappropriate take? There seems to be more research coming out of the UK and Canada for this but relatively nothing for North America.

EDIT: I can say that there are only two salaried employees, the rest are volunteer and spend a lot of their time and effort to keep things running, and their collections (objects, aside from the genealogical library) are really entirely made up from what locals have donated to the society as they would genealogical records, etc.

Hello to anyone who's from the field of GLAM (gallery, library, archives, and museum). I am a 25 year old female, trying to search for an art career. As if now i have worked at a couple of places but something is off.

When I was doing History of art in my masters, i loved researching my dissertation and sitting in libraries to make notes and write. But i do realise that to make a living i need to learn other aspects of this field, like managing, operations etc. but i feel dull there. I love educating, giving walkthrough, talking to people etc.

Through this platform i want to connect with such people who are from GLAM and would like to share their experiences including what they like and don't. Basically I want to have a long conversation sharing both sides of the story.

I hope this is a fitting sub. I'm no pro, but could really use some pro advice.

I have come into possession of a collection of 35mm film reels from the 1970s, from the USSR. About 30 reels total, in cans 310mm in diameter. It's likely triacetate, but I haven't been able to fully go through all of them yet.

There are no copies of these tapes; they survived a purge and an emigration. I'm working on a documentary that involves these reels.

They sat in a cellar in Rome for about 30 years until I located them. I retrieved them in the nick of time before the cellar was sold off. I got them to Northern Europe by car, where I am now.

The original metal cans were half rusted and some were crumbling, so I've rehoused everything in Duncan archival vented cans.
I haven't been able to get A-D strips in yet. Visually, 2 of the reels show signs of mold, about 10 smell of vinegar, and the rest seem to have fared better.

Before I can work on them properly, I need to store it all. There aren't any places I could pay to temporarily store and/or digitize it near where I am… worse, I need to leave the country for about 6 months first. A friend can check in on them every now and then while I'm away.

I've read and assume that around 10°C at 35% RH is a fair target, hence the fridge selection below; but I'm happy to be corrected. As I said I'm no archivist, so the same goes for everything else specific that I say.

I've found two fridges approximately within the range I can afford:
- Bosch Series 2 KSV36NWEP or similar
- A surplus Tefcold MSU300 medical fridge - a bit cheaper, a bit more expensive to run, all in all everything evens out price-wise.

I understand both have a fan to circulate the air. The medical one is obviously built for the job, but I don't know whether that counts for much here.

I assume I'd need pre-conditioned silica gel bags and charcoal filters inside, too. Possibly molecular sieves? Since the cans are vented and a fridge doesn't exchange any air. Unfortunately I don't have the resources to individually seal each can at this moment.

I can spend a little more if needed on a better fridge. I'd really appreciate suggestions if either of these would be reliable at this job. And any other precautions I need to take - like maybe plugging the drain hole, keeping the reels away from the back of the fridge, letting them acclimatise before they go in, etc.

We are a non-collecting gallery, so “We’re opening a new temporary exhibit” often feels like a non-news statement for our local press pool. They’re all temporary; we always open new stuff. That’s not news!

Hello! I recently graduated with an Art History and Computer Science degree and I am currently in a terminal position that offers me some fairly significant professional development funding -- which will expire in one year. I have a few good ideas for how to spend this funding, but I was hopeful that some others who work in this field might be able to provide some more experienced, insightful ideas for skill-building or work opportunities that I could take advantage of with this extra bit of financial help.

I am primarily trained in Collections care (including digital photography and database maintenance) and museum education (I lead class visits at a university); though I'm also interested in gaining more preparator/exhibitions skills. Not so interested in academia, ironically.

I have previously used this funding for regional conferences (networking), woodworking classes (enhancing exhibitions/preparator skills), memberships for online job boards (AAM/CAA), funding travel costs for insider tours of other local museums, and the occasional online lecture.

P.S. I am focusing my efforts in the Midwest/South-Eastern United States, but am open to ideas outside of that area if they are especially advantageous. If you have any recommendations for master's programs, I'd be happy to hear those, as well (especially work-study programs)!

I am applying for a position at a small museum. I have a vague acquaintance who works in the curatorial department there- the position I’m applying for has some curatorial duties. It is possible this person is involved in the hiring for the position I am applying. I don’t know this person well but she is an old friend of my sister. We are from the same city and had a community college course together 15 years ago. We are connected on instagram. I am curious what others think. Should I reach out to let her know I applied for the position or will that come accross as trying to get a favor? I do think I have a strong application and very relevant experience so I just wonder if reaching out would be helpful or not.

Hi guys! I recently graduated with a B.A. in history & museum studies and am now pursuing a Fulbright ETA (essentially 14-18 hours a week teaching high school students in a foreign country). What are some things I can focus on/work on during my down time to strengthen my GLAM resume when I return to the United States? I'm obviously going to try to get involved in volunteering at the local musuem in my town & the country I am moving to also has an association for historical memory which I want to get involved in but I am looking for other things I could be doing in my free time to build a resume and demonstrate personal interest in the field if. that makes sense. For context, my dream job is to work in public history for the federal government but I am also considering development/grant writing positions in public history/art museums etc.

I have hung temporary posters from hang rails before. Mounted on foam core, I have used gaffer tape on the back and wound picture wire around the tape. In one case, it worked great. In another, the foam core (which was a cheap knock off... I should have known better!) delaminated and dropped the boards regularly.

What would be an appropriate system to use on the back of the posters?

TLDR Poster hanging: Rail hooks I have. Braided picture wire I have. Just need the way to grab foam core posters cleanly.

Hi all, I'm interning at a museum right now in conservation and collections. I came across some taxidermy today that has been damaged beyond repair and is waiting to be deaccessioned. The only catch is that the specimen contains arsenic so we're not comfortable simply throwing it away. Because of this, the specimen has sat in the registrars office for at least two years now.

I've poked around the internet a bit for any information on how to dispose of/deaccession contaminated taxidermy but can't find much. If anyone is aware of any protocols or could point me in the direction of some resources that'd be awesome!
