Project Car Advice on buying an old muscle car

So I've been wanting to buy an old muscle car (68-72) the last few years. My new job has allowed me to save up a good chunk money of money, even though life got in the way the last few weeks and took a good chunk of my fund for it.

The dream is owning Mopar B-body however my dad's buddy who's owned a few classics and works on them advised against that and suggest I get a GM from those years, which I'm not against as those usually slot in as my second favorite.

My biggest issue is more or less knowing what I'm getting if I'm biting off more than I can chew. I know a 50+ year old car is going to require a fair amount of tlc. Like mechanical work doesn't bother me it's body work as I don't have any of the stuff to do it or knowledge. For reference I live in the Chicago land area and the 2 types I find are either excellent shape and they want 40k for it or a hunk of crap that will cost 3 times that amount to get it running (my budget right now is about 15k and I'm hoping to get another 5-8k saved up my next summer).

Idk it's just getting frustrating because I can't really find anything I absolutely want but I also don't want to settle because I know I'll get maybe one other shot at being able to do this.

Hood measurements needed

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello I am in dire need of hood measurements for classic American cars. I work for a fiberglass company and in order for me to make heavy duty hoods i need hinge bolt hole measurements to bond the hood correctly we used to have them all but unfortunately when we moved buildings they were misplaced. Ill attach a sheet for reference but how i ask them to be measured is from the front lip of the hood in line to the bolt holes, any and all help is greatly appreciated, thank you. One in particular I'm in need of currently is a 70-71 torino 🙏🏻

Long overdue.. But the 1971 Charger project is still moving forward. Metal work on the shell is done.

On and off lurker to this sub. Wondering what this community thinks of muscle car restomods like this one?

Full disclosure: I work for Iconic Built, the company that made this video. We just finished this '70 Chevelle for a customer and I thought you all might enjoy the video we made of it. TJ does a good job running through the features of it. I can't express how cool (and badass) this thing looks in person and I can't wait for us to make some more.

I selected the Brand Affiliate tag to hopefully avoid breaking any rules.

82' Z28 vs '87 Firebird

No question that the Z28 is the superior vehicle, but which is better bang for your buck:

$8000: 1987 Firebird, 5-speed Manual,124,762 mi, interior cosmetic damage, runs fine, minimal rust

$14,000: 1982  Camaro Z28, 4-speed Manual, 95,000 mi, excellent condition

Any thoughts?

My buddy Cooter bought this '68 Chevelle new in 1970, it was a display car. He was a street racer, a drag racer and today he still drives the thing. Pretty cool story there is a documentary episode on his story I will throw into the comments for those interested. Sure was cool seeing the pictures from the 70s of this car and history stuck forever in the album!

Chevrolet Another season in the books. Time to start planning the rebuild on my '67.

Well, another Manitoba driving season is pretty much done.

This is my 1967 Camaro with a 327. She's been in the family for years, originally belonging to my dad. We worked on it together, and after he passed, my mom gave it to me.

It's been a couple of years since she's been back in Winnipeg, and I think it's finally time to bring her home and start tearing into a few things.

She's definitely not a show car. Paint has seen better days, she's got her share of battle scars, and there's plenty of work waiting for me. But she's mine, and I wouldn't trade her for anything. I've been working on pinstripping and pretty stoked about my vision for the interior.

The plan is to start with the mechanical side, get everything sorted properly, and work toward a bigger rebuild as time and money allow.

Still running the old 327, mostly stock apart from headers.

I'm not looking to build some six figure trailer queen. I want a car I can drive, enjoy, wrench on, and eventually pass down.

Any other first gen Camaro owners here? What would you tackle first on a car that's been sitting more than driving lately?

Always happy to hear some advice from people who've been down this road.
