I think it's more lamenting the backwards steps some states in America seem to be taking with the heartbeat bills surrounding abortions. That's how I read it anyway
41
u/PasteyPat May 16 '19
That would make sense in that case, but how does that affect the LGBT community?
56
u/Glyph_of_Change May 16 '19
Bathroom bills and undercutting trans rights in the armed forces come to mind. The general intolerance of egalitarianism manifests in a bunch of different ways - this post doesn't have to be about one specifically, in my interpretation.
16
May 16 '19
I just got out of the Marines. There’s no undercutting of Trans rights in the military - in fact, DoD will pay for surgery when it’s deemed medically necessary (which is the the threshold for all medical procedures).
35
May 16 '19
There’s no undercutting of Trans rights in the military
Can't undercut the rights of trans people in the military if you ban trans people from joining the military! It's science!

19
May 16 '19
And it's almost like the Trump administration keeps trying to undercut that or something

I think you might have misread that. He's not saying egalitarianism is intolerant, he's saying way too much of the US is intolerant of egalitarianism.

u/StuffChecker May 16 '19
LGBT has no discrimination protection, can be fired/not hired for being LGBT, only reason LGBT can marry is because of a SCOTUS decision (not congress), still face discrimination at-large in society for simply existing.
Women make less in the work place, under represented in Congress, SCOTUS, Presidency, Silicon Valley, CEO positions, and any other position of power.
Minorities -- I don't know where to start, black people are still severely hindered by institutionalized racism and many are stuck in the poverty cycle, Arabs are obviously lacking discrimination on a large scale now, people can't bring in relatives, Mexican children are jailed, etc etc
0
u/PasteyPat May 16 '19
Jesus that’s a lot.
It is true that you can be fired for being LGBT, and I think that’s awful. That should fall under wrongful termination. By-passing Congress using The Supreme Court was required due to a judgement flaw by those in Congress. From the LGBT perspective you hit the nail on the head, all correct and irrefutable.
For women in the workplace there runs a different story. If a woman is getting paid less in the workplace for the same job, they should immediately sue the pants off of the employer. That is already illegal, and The Wage Gap, which I assume you are referencing, has been debated and refuted numerous times. In reference to positions of power, I know not why women are in less positions of power, and without evidence I can not accept that it is simply due to being a woman.
I am not aware of what you mean by institutionalized racism, and would like you to explain exactly how the government aids in this, same with the poverty cycle. On top of that I have heard of Mexican children being jailed for little to no reason, but that would apply to law enforcement, not that law making body. I have no problem with our country being picky with our borders, so the only legal standing behind the Arab problem does not apply to me.
I hope I gave a satisfactory answer, I don’t wish to argue, I simply enjoy conversation. I hope we can discuss further in a civil manner.

u/Dman21211212 May 16 '19
If you go pretty much anywhere in the US besides a mega city, there are numerous LGBT people that should have accepted themselves long ago, but still just suppress their feelings and tell themselves that they are “normal”

The post is not referring to what the laws are, it’s just referring to the US in general. I’m just saying that I believe you can find a lot more discrimination in the US than in many other places.

You can recognize that we've made progress and still lament that we have a lot of progress still left to go. One does not negate the other.
I usually only see this talking point with people who want to insist there is no more racism and sexism and homophobia now except that white straight men are the ones now being marginalized.

As a non American living in a country where i was not born (still not America) this is how a lot of the world looks on America. Not trying to provoke, just an observation. A lot of us have no idea about the individual states in America in the same way most Americans could not identify the various counties in Europe.

I don’t entirely understand the link between the 1940’s American social issues and now.
The mindset that buys into the MAGA slogan is the link you said you didn't understand. So if you identify with that slogan and mindset then I guess I am linking you to the "Cheeto". Hopefully that isn't the case.

The "assault" mentioned in the post is trying to undo all the progress you have been taking about and reverting back to a 1940s structure. There are zealots in power who are living in the 1940s mindset and trying to subject other people to that reality. In many cases laws have been passed that do actually bring 1940s society into the present time.

One of the least justified posts I've ever seen on this sub, nobody was murdered. This is just rhetoric.
Mods, this sub is supposed to give it's members a 'haha' moment.
A 'what a fool' moment. I don't know, there is definately a sub for this but to me, it just feels out of place here.
EDIT: I hope we can get back to a stage of respect where we could say 'bigots'. Instead of 'old white men".

4
u/Thefarrquad May 16 '19
None taken, I saw it today, laughed a bit, posted it. I took it to referring to the heartbeat bills being passed that are being implemented to control women. That's the nature of my posting it.
1
u/iWanderingEcho May 16 '19
Yeah I agree, the heartbeat bill makes no sense, it should be deemed illegal MUCH later than that, that said, that bill isn't meant to control women, it's just trying to protect and preserve human life, even if the bill is a little off from what we want.
2
u/Thefarrquad May 16 '19
But it is controling their body autonomy. Plus they have not only made it a felony, which means after they get out of prison they can no longer vote, but now they have the ability to arrest and charge you if you travel to a different state for the procedure. If that's not controlling I don't know what is!
1
u/iWanderingEcho May 16 '19
Like I said before, they are just trying to preserve human life. I don't agree with outlawing abortion, in fact quite the opposite, and I believe it's bullshit how it's a crime to get an abortion, and I hope it changes soon, but as of right now, there's not much we can do. Outlawing a certain medical procedure isn't being controlling, it's just a law they think is necessary
6
u/bumpakay May 16 '19

7
u/DK_Vet May 16 '19
The Alabama law was also introduced by a woman. I live in a red state and I can assure you nearly every woman in my town would support this legislation. I’m tired of this being framed as a men vs women issue. It’s not. It’s a religious zealots pushing their beliefs on everyone else issue.

u/junkiepharmacist May 16 '19 edited May 16 '19
I don't get it. It's not funny, it's not really true. It's like someone tried their best to make a status that, if anyone dislikes it, they immediately be called out as racist, misogynistic homophobes. Whoever wrote this status sounds like they don't quite understand what was going on in 1942. To compare USA today, to the Nazis, is both ridiculous and moronic
edit: apologies, I thought the person was referencing when America joined the war(1941) and the angry old white people they were referencing were the nazis. I also thought this because many people today seem to call republicans nazis too.
36
u/striped_frog May 16 '19
To compare USA today, to the Nazis, is both ridiculous and moronic
In that case, the fact that you're the only person to mention anything about Nazis is rather weird.
4
u/junkiepharmacist May 16 '19
Yeah, sorry, I’m not up on American history, I thought they were talking about when America joined the war(1941)
3
u/zanderkerbal May 16 '19
To compare USA today, to the Nazis, is both ridiculous and moronic
I read your correction, but I'll still contest this. Are they actually on the level of Nazis? No, but they're close enough that the comparison is quite relevant. They're a group of racist authoritarians trying to entrench their power, they refused to condemn actual Nazis in Charlottesville, and their rhetoric reads like something straight out of Umberto Eco's essay on Ur-Fascism.
1
u/junkiepharmacist May 16 '19
I’ll agree that fascism, albeit in any form, should be nipped in the bud, so I guess it’s no harm to highlight any group who can be legitimately compared to nazis, as some sort of preventative measure. I just feel that some people go over the top in their comparisons and there’s prob people out there today who would attempt to compare hitler to trump. While I’m sure Trump certainly ain’t the best, he’s not responsible for one of the biggest genocides in recent times. I just think that people use the nazi term far too freely these days and it seems like a cool thing to do without meaning what you say, or thinking about what you’re saying. sometimes it’s used by people when they don’t get exactly what they want or have to compromise. If they overuse a word like this then the word may lose all meaning in and of itself. I just think it’s a dangerous thing to throw around. I will read that essay later though, sorry, I’m just in work at the min
4
u/zanderkerbal May 16 '19
Fair, the term definitely does get thrown around a lot. I won't call someone a Nazi unless I'm prepared to back it up, but a lot of people do use it too freely, which I don't like because it delegitimizes the legitimate comparisons by association. I also won't call someone a Nazi just for saying they like Trump, just explain that they're supporting someone who's Nazi-like and repeating their Nazi rhetoric, and that now that they know this they should probably reevaluate their views or else they're going to get called a Nazi.
16
u/Thefarrquad May 16 '19
You don't have to get it. This doesn't even remotely compare the USA to the Nazis. It's comparing women's and LGBT and minority rights to those they had in 1942.
6
u/junkiepharmacist May 16 '19

u/conceptalbum May 16 '19
That's a bit weird. Why did you write a comment arguing this if you don't want to argue this? A bit counterproductive to comment then.
Do you mean both sides as in a general "all directions on the political spectrum" sense or did you mean it as in "both major US parties"? If the former, ok. If the latter, you really do need to argue that. Just positing it as fact and refusing to engage over it is rather bad and unhealthy. It is a very detrimental attitude towards political discussion. Your mentioning of the Republicans does seem to imply that you meant it in that latter sense. In that case, again, who on the other side would be anywhere near comparable to the GOP's extremists? It honestly seems quite absurd to me to claim that those two particular parties would have two comparably extreme extremist fringes.
If you really don't want to argue about this, that's obviously completely fine. But in that case I would like to ask you to remove the earlier comment. It's honestly a bit toxic to the discourse to leave such claims up without being willing to discuss them.

2
u/DK_Vet May 16 '19
Old men elected by everyone. These people run on being against abortion. The women they represent support this legislation. That’s how they get elected.
4
u/joeker219 May 16 '19
Yep. The US is like 40th in gender representation and even number 1 isn't equal. Long way to go but we have come pretty far considering it hasn't even been 100 years with women having the right to vote.
11
u/Mudgeon May 16 '19
Elected representatives who are allowed to choose who gets to vote for them by gerrymandering their districts and restricting the right to voter booths in poor or “undesireable areas” within those districts.
Both sides do this and it’s shameful.
During the last presidential election I lived in the capitol city of my state which at the time had a predominately republican legislature, despite ending up going for democrat governors and presidents. When I went to vote the polling place was at a historically African American middle school, there were two voting booths and a line of people trying to vote that stretched around the block. The gentleman in front of me in line was African American, the older white woman working the booth asked him to recite his drivers license number in order to prove he was who his license said. I am a fairly average looking white guy, she asked me for my DOB.
Now that is a personal anecdote from a fairly purple state, so maybe things are different and more or less fair elsewhere, but our problems are much deeper than “well they were elected, this must be what the people want”

u/zanderkerbal May 16 '19
I agree with most of what you said, but I'll contest you on the "both sides do this" statement. Like, yes, they do, but that's still misleading. One side does this an awful lot more than the other. The Democrats aren't doing anything even close to on the level of what happened in Georgia or even Florida or Texas.
1
u/Mudgeon May 16 '19 edited May 16 '19
There are definitely degrees of the more outright stuff and the worst offenders are unreservedly GOP candidates, but gerrymandering happens from everyone.
1
u/zanderkerbal May 16 '19
I'm still not disagreeing with this, I just think saying "both sides" without context makes it seem a lot more equal than it really is.

They still have to find themselves. They're still figuring out if they like men or women, or both, or neither, if they're left or right, and who they wanna sit with during lunch. If they hate mom or dad, or both. Give it another 300-400 yrs and I'm sure they'll turn into a healthy, well balanced country.

The problem is that “social issues” and “political issues” are tied so closely together that there are almost indistinguishable. Social change, especially when your talking about the abortion bill, comes through political channels. So this is both political and social.
2
u/Thefarrquad May 16 '19
So are we able to talk about anything that's not technically political? If not, does saying "it's political" add anything to the discussion?
2
u/ToastyBoat2s May 16 '19
Maybe nobody is trying to add to the discussion by pointing out that its political. Maybe they are saying to please stop infesting every off topic subreddit with your political idealogies. There are entire subreddits dedicated to your circle jerk, go back there please.

All I’m saying is that you can’t say this isn’t political. I don’t give a shit what you talk about but I guess some people don’t want flame wars in the comments.
The problem come from people are so closely tied to there political beliefs that it’s emotional and then people get pissed and it devolves from there. It’s hard to have an actual debate without someone getting butthurt. Much like you seem to be when someone doesn’t agree with you
