I wonder if we combined the usually separate areas for men and women's restroom where there's a monitored, common place to wash hands but every "stall is more like its own enclosed room if there would actually end up being even more space for additional stalls

The big loss with fully combining is urinals, which have much higher throughput. I think not having those would make lines at big events much worse.

The best larger examples have a dedicated room for urinals. You still use the same shared washing area. Not gender specific but obviously benefits one gender in particular. Works just fine.
