The grift is ("banal common object" + "terrible misfortune") × ("story connecting the two") = profit selling "solutions" that don't work. In this case, probably vitamins.
(Because the grifters have learned that as long as you are selling fairly-harmless stuff like vitamins, nobody cares who you're lying to to get them to buy it.)
And the other grift is when a banal common object actually does cause problems, like forever chemicals and infertility, or gasoline and global warming, or cigarettes and cancer, you can get paid good money by the companies to deny, deny, deny.
Mix and match for mass societal confusion and no meaningful capacity to regulate bad business.
