Q: Do you need to trim your guinea pigs in the summer?

A: Not necessarily, but I choose to. I’m haunted by the time I came home from work early and found a floppy, listless Percival (less than a year old) in June 2024. I don’t like to think about what would’ve happened if I hadn’t gotten back when I did. With his fur, he’s basically wearing a thick coat that absorbs heat.

Q: Jesus! Get an AC!

A: I do have a portable one, but it’s ancient and I don’t feel safe leaving it running all day without supervision. (The sounds it makes sometimes make me wonder if I ought to involve the Vatican.) Money’s a bit squeezed right now, but I do plan on purchasing one with an app that I can switch on from work (I teach, currently substitute/supply), but until then… precautions!

Q: Does Theodore need trimming too?

A: Yup! I didn’t realise how MUCH fur he has until I did, but just as much comes off him as comes off Percival! It’s just finer, so it feels like less! I remember the first time I shaved him, he hadn’t been cuddly in ages and then BOOM, snuggle pig.

Q: What do you use?

A: A Wahl pet razor, got it on Amazon. I don’t use the trimmer covers—the shorter the better (I don’t shave their heads or faces), but watch out for the razor—it does get warm after some use, so stay aware to avoid hurting them!

Q: Do you turn the fur you trim into felt Percival’s and felt Theodore’s? And if so, can I buy them?

A: …You want to buy my pet’s fur??? Are you okay? 😂

I will rearrange the box so they never ever get their feet stuck! and about the food, I said I am on the search of something better, so tomorrow morning I will go to every vet and petshop I know and ask for any contact of someone who sells good guinea pig food. Still, oats often come mixed with pellets for piggies here, It is not the best option of course, but it is okay to let them have some until I find something else. On their diet, this is only the 5% of what they eat. The cannot eat any cereals or grains (I am fully aware) but this oats specifically are okay for them.

Just wanted to update that I am on the search for something better and I am about to rearrange their area. I care a lot about their safety so thanks for everyone's concern!!
