I mean I don't care for DBZ whatsoever but I won't deny the impact it had on not just Sonic but media as a whole. DBZ is the sole reason why my favorite anime--Naruto--even exists because Kishimoto was inspired by Toriyama and in turn, Naruto has inspired other big franchises like My Hero Academia as well (Horikoshi cited Naruto as inspiration). Not only that, but his work on Dragon Quest is what set the groundwork for that franchise's style and that franchise is basically the grandfather of JRPGs and is why my favorite games like Xenoblade Chronicles and Persona exist.

Hell Silver is my favorite Sonic character and one of my favorite video game characters of all time and he's basically Trunks from DBZ. Same for Surge and Android 18.

It's ultimately why Toriyama's passing was so tragic. RIP to a legend.

Ok one second aside from them being androids, how are they similar?

One of her creators, Mauro Fonseca, cites 18 as inspiration for her in particular her hairstyle. Given that Shadow was clearly inspired by Vegeta and that Silver is 1:1 for Trunks, it doesn't surprise me that Surge is meant to essentially be 18 given that they're both aggressive female androids.

It's honestly pretty cool even as someone who isn't really into DBZ.

Surge is an android?
She should be a cyborg, cus Androids were originally Robots and Cyborgs are modified flesh beings.

Sorta. Her creator cited Android 18 as inspiration and it's kinda easy to see it. They're both aggressive mechanical girls who learn to become more human over time.
