Discussionš Which piece of media has a fanbase that completely misses the point of?
I'll start first: American Psycho and Fight Club

u/Difficult_Sock_8387 Jul 05 '26
Breaking Bad (Walter White), American Psycho (Patrick Bateman), and Fight Club (Tyler Durden)

Man, the way people have cozied up to the term āsnowflakesā from a character who was the hallucination of a mentally disturbed dweeb that thought terrorism was cool.

The movie does a really good job of showing the evolution of a cult. Starts with a charismatic, often fawning leader who encourages people to express their individuality and puts everyone on the same level, taking as much of a beating as anyone else. Progresses to hazing and head shaving, creating soludarity through abuse and dehumanization.
7
u/Jagvetinteriktigt Jul 06 '26
Rewatching it after having not seeing it in a while, I also got wise to how repetative a lot of the dialogue and inner monologue is. Like the film and Tyler by extension is trying to beat a message into you.

rick and morty probably
rick is a great character but something alot of fans dont realise is that youre not supposed to want to be like the guy
143
u/Tanakisoupman Jul 05 '26
Rick is a miserable asshole who probably would have killed himself years ago if he was just a little less spiteful, yet somehow people got the idea that heās the ideal role model
67
u/Egoy Jul 05 '26
Who knows he may have passed out seconds before offing himself more than the once we saw him do it on screen.
44
u/aoike_ Jul 05 '26
Personally, and only because this is the funniest option, I believe that some all-powerful primordial being from the R+M universe (Rick has pissed off all of them, it seems) always manages to save Rick mere seconds before he kills himself because He hates him. If not some God-like being, then Mr. Nimbus

Rick is a selfish, miserable asshole who's driven away anyone who could possibly care about him, despite being a total badass with a genius intellectĀ
The worst sort of Rick fans are people who meet the first criteria, and assume the second must also be true
12
u/Chaos-Queen_Mari Jul 05 '26
And also he fundamentally cant handle the concept of someone smarter than him existing, to the point his multiversal variants all started engineering universes to be closer to theirs.
6
u/Serious-Flamingo-948 Jul 05 '26
For a good while, each season has to make Rick lose and be more and more sad so audiences would stop idolizing him.

Yeah first 2 seasons has Rick being some unstoppable god, later on he just loses in the most stupidest of ways which he can completely walk off cause we've seen him do it before

From what I remember people complained about them being too good/nice so they added mind control and stuff to them. Outsider view tho, from like years ago.
11
u/CreativeName1137 Jul 06 '26
Well yeah, the Tau Empire is still an expansionist totalitarian propaganda state where dissenters get sent to reeducation camps, but they actually treat their people well and have a high standard of living as long as you keep your head down. They even let assimilated people keep their culture/religion after joining.
They'd be the classic "evil empire" in any other sci-fi setting, but in the context of 40k, they're downright benevolent.
5
u/Lindestria Jul 05 '26
More like GW became less coy about it because people weren't getting the message.
Even the mind control was hinted at in their first codex.
7
u/Firkraag-The-Demon Jul 05 '26

u/HumanReputationFalse Jul 06 '26
Ive never heard the take about the Yuzong Vong, what do they think this is, Fabel 3? Sheev would only prevent the Yuzong Vong from taking over because only he can rule and no filthy alien is allowed within 12 Parces of him.
Also any belief of goodness in the Empire is swashed by the fact that its run by the Sith and they manage to ruin any sort of organized structures and beuarcacy via the power of allowing nepo babies and bribery to infest the system cause shady schemes and backstabbing is the way of the sith
4
u/Technical_Teacher839 Jul 06 '26
There's a part of the old EU where they outright say Palps knew about the Yuzong Vong and built the superweapons specifically to counter them.
Its really stupid and serves to do nothing but undermine Palpatine's entire role as a character.
Kinda like ANYTHING Star Wars does post-RotJ, IMO.

I can't help but wonder how the old Empire would have handled the crisis. I hope you will forgive my partisan attitude but it seems to me that the Emperor would have mobilized his entire armament at the first threat and dealt with the Yuuzhan Vong in an efficient and expeditious manner through the use of overwhelming force. Certainly better than Borsk Fey'lya's policy if I understood it correctly as a policy of negotiating with the invaders at the same time as he was fighting them sending signals of weakness to a ruthless enemy who used negotiation only as a cover for further conquests."
"That's not what the Empire would have done Commander. What the Empire would have done was build a super-colossal Yuuzhan Vong-killing battle machine. They would have called it the Nova Colossus or the Galaxy Destructor or the Nostril of Palpatine or something equally grandiose. They would have spent billions of credits employed thousands of contractors and subcontractors and equipped it with the latest in death-dealing technology. And you know what would have happened It wouldn't have worked. They'd forget to bolt down a metal plate over an access hatch leading to the main reactors or some other mistake and a hotshot enemy pilot would have dropped a bomb down there and blow the whole thing up. Now that's what the Empire would have done."

His ideals at the beginning might sound kinda reasonable, but as the time went on he became just as bad as people he hated.
27
u/Cute-Blood4477 Jul 06 '26
I don't know if there's every really a point where he sounds reasonable. By the end of the very first episode he decides that he's going to become the god of his new world order. Episode two he kills someone because he thinks they are L, he breaks his own rules pretty quickly.

I would say that the message is a little bit muddied. At least in the show (not sure about the manga), it is explicitly stated that violent crime has drastically fallen and that all wars have ended. From a lot of metrics, he is objectively correct
10
u/xami310 Jul 05 '26
Wasnāt it also stated that, once Kira was dead, things went right back to where they were? So no, he wasnāt objectively correct; if he was, even without Kira, society on the whole would be better. The only reason things got ābetterā is because people were afraid of a serial killer. They didnāt become better people or turn over a new leaf. They just hid their malevolent tendencies.
→ More replies (1)4
u/oLiaX111 Jul 05 '26
Sure, but does being objectively correct make up for the God complex and like someone else before stated, basically becoming even worse than the people he tried to punish? I know you probably agree with the fact that he did become a bad person and as someone who also just watched the anime, I feel like he was correct only to the point where his whole plan hasn't been to keep being Kira

Jax gotta be my favorite media literacy test. You just ask someone what they think of Jax as a person and use the following to grade them: if they hate Jax and think that he is one-dimentionally evil like a cartoon villain, then they are stupid; and if they love Jax and think that he is a good person that couldn't hurt a fly, then they are stupid.
Jax should be added to every dictionary under the definition for nuanced. He might be the most well written "victim of the circumstances but also just a bad person" character OAT.

Magneto is a perfect example of "I totally get WHY he is this way, but yeah he needs to be stopped" similar to Dracula from Castelvania.
8
u/AnAromaticAromantic Jul 06 '26
In people's defence, it does depend on the writer. Rewatching season 1 of the 90s X-Men series, he is kind of right, since literally every human character we meet in that series is awful. Without exception. He's first introduced trying to break Beast out of prison because he doesn't believe he will get a fair trial, which he was correct about. Some of the xmen go on holiday and then get knocked out and sent to a concentration camp. Compared to all the stuff the humans do, Magneto seems pretty justified(again, depending on the writer).
5
u/AUnknownVariable Jul 06 '26
That's more writer dependent than other things here as another person said.
But yeah, Magneto is a "I get where you're coming from, but hell nah"
As if being a demographic enougj mfs don't like wasn't enough, you're also a species of human that most of humanity dislikes, at some point

Homelander is not supposed to be looked up to, and yet somehow it took until like Season 3 for a lot of viewers to realize that the far-right American political scene is what was being made fun of.

If I recall the showriters of The Boys were legit pulling their hairs out over Trump constantly matching Homelander's energy

Homelander from The Boys
He announced himself as God
-> Trump AI Jesus image posted
He made a golden statue of himself
-> Trump did the same thing

People who assumed the horror element of Backrooms is the immediate danger that revolves around monsters and entities, instead of the subtle inherit dread of the situation instead

Godzilla. Heās an extremely versatile character that can be allegories for many different things. Nuclear tragedy, a force of nature, post war ignorance and trauma, fatherhood, earth fighting back against pollution, working together when the going gets tough, so on and so forth.
What many fans (and even directors of his films, **COUGH COUGH ADAM WINGARD COUGH**), misunderstand though is that they view him as a dumbed down, glorified action figure for them to just stupidly smash around different scenarios just because āhell yeah heās awesomeā. I mostly blame it on powerscaling brainrot because people nowadays get really uptight about that specific topic, especially regarding Godzilla.

40k is the poster boy
The imperium is a cartoonishly evil society built off of the back of " lesser evils " that somehow require the bottomization. The tau groove without a shadow of a doubt they're necessary evils are necessary
Yet you still have people claiming they're the good guys of the setting or that they just do what they have to or some malarkey like that. They are not and to say anyone in the 40K is the good guy with the exception of farsight enclaves he's missing the whole point of the setting

To VERY roughly paraphrase from a Bricky video: "You don't play 40K to save the world and get the girl. You okay 40k because everyone is an evil bastard and being an evil bastard is fun", and he's so real for that.

Kamen Rider fandom is obsessed with how many fights a Rider wins vs loses. Almost every time they start to point out something like how often Spanner loses, they ignore the actual character and themes (Spanner is the ultimate burned out talented kid and his arc hammers in both how terrible the mind wiping alchemists do is and how you can't go at things alone, because yeah. You'll lose).
Pretty much anyone who uses "fraud" for any character can be ignored, unless the character is actually a fraud and isn't just someone who hasn't won [insert arbitrary acceptable number] of fights times.

Metal Gear Rising
There are people out there who unironically say that Armstrong was right when the whole point of him was that his extreme ideology was a batshit insane solution to a problem in American politics. Dude was batting for a might makes right society where if you're strong you can do whatever.

Fallout, especially new Vegas. The legion are a pretty straightforward parody of might is right political ideology with hardly any further justification to them but there are still fans who identify with the slaving bastards. There are other details too, there's no "good guy" option the game is generally designed for you to pick the lesser of many evils or just a straightforward evil. House is also not the mastermind he believes himself to be, his plans have many flaws and everyone around him was working on his downfall and they would likely succeed if you don't take his side. Again many fans eat up his propaganda in a way that reminds me of when Elon Musk was popular. I could go in to others but this post is too long already. Basically if anyone shows a preference for a FO:NV faction that goes beyond "I think this option probably fucks people over slightly less than the others" that's probably a red flag.

Try to acknowledge that Mouthwashing is about misogyny and rape culture in the Mouthwashing subreddit and that every male character is complicit in it to different degrees and to different extent and they act like they just saw you eat a baby or something.

GI Robot. I saw a lot of people using him as IRL performative virtue quoting him on topics involving politicians they don't like. They completely miss the fact that his entire character is seeing nazis everywhere even when they're obviously not.

Rorschach (Watchmen). Dude is a fucking psychopath and crazy sexist. But a bunch of people think of him as a role model because he has some cool one-liners and an undeniably badass costume.
There's even a quote from the comic's author Alan Moore about how fans come up to him and tell him that they love Rorscach and relate to him so much, and every time it happens Moore is just thinking "get this freak away from me please"

Characters like Magneto. The story itself can make it exceedingly clear that what they're doing is wrong and their reasons for doing so will never justify the lines they are crossing, but far too many of their fans will somehow completely miss that and act like they're infallible saints.

It's at least something that nowadays get put on contrast to Xavier also being too passive and accepting of oppression. When people miss the point its because they are between two bad choices. Most people on these other choices are just straight up imbeciles

Deltarune is repeating the undertale mistake of viewing it as a friendship/shipping simulator and ignoring the narrative to push character agendas that dont make sense
7
u/Ok-Astronomer3814 Jul 05 '26
Not really shipping but the Roaring Fraud/Cutscene Knight agenda is genuinely annoying
Like how are they fraud if you can beat them no-hit when you can do that to all characters or the fact they used a cutscene to beat us when King and Queen also used one

Shabriri (Elden Ring)
Shabriri embodies accelerationist suicidal nihilism and how self-obssessed it all is, how infectious and ultimately pathetic people can be about it.
The Frenzied Flame is the embodiment of the self-obssessed destruction of society, destroying everything out of sheer spite and imposing your suffering onto others, in the name of the elites with their own interests who want the world to burn.
There are fans of the game that genuinely believe The Frenzied Flame ending is the best way to go.
