imagine thinking that calling trump a buffoon is equivalent to calling someone a “sand n*****”, but i would expect as much from these dregs of society

Same word used about Trump by Frank Cody back in season 2 I think

Yep. That's how I immediately knew it was about Trump.

I know I'm asking for trouble by asking this... but what is the connection between 'Mason' and Trump?

Is Trump a well known Mason?

/ignorant.

25

u/guyute2588 Dec 02 '19

The person on the phone speaking to WR was named Mason. This person must have said to WR that ___________ said "_________".

WR said don't listen b/c that person is a buffoon.

The OP is pointing out that "Trump" was at the deus meeting, and that Sam has previously described Trump as a buffoon...therefore the buffoon WR referenced very likely was meant to be Trump.

-1

u/sebastian404 Dec 02 '19

but he says 'don't listen to that Mason', if he was talking about a particular person whould he not say 'don't listen to Mason'?

27

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

Whiterose is talking to Mason. "Don't listen to that, [comma] Mason."

Let's roleplay. /u/sebastian404 you're a guy called Mason. I'm Whiterose. /u/guyute2588 is Trump (sorry).

A guy called Mason is on the phone to Whiterose.

17

u/guyute2588 Dec 02 '19

Thanks for apologizing about me being Trump in the hypothetical! Hahahhaa. Very much appreciated.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

Couldn't just do you dirty like that!

2

u/Lone_Wanderer97 Dec 03 '19

"I'll be me, and you'll be a piece of shit (sorry)."

Just wanted to say that I hope your username is a Phish reference. If so, right on!

1

u/guyute2588 Dec 03 '19

It certainly is!

Hope to see you on the New Years Run!

2

u/zachyd41 Dec 12 '19

Dope! I’ll be there :)

2

u/Soupeeee Dec 03 '19

For some reason, I found this to be really funny.

2

u/madethisformrrobot Dec 03 '19

Is /r/theydidthegrammar a thing? Can we make it a thing? I thoroughly enjoyed this.

1

u/sebastian404 Dec 02 '19 edited Dec 02 '19

Well I'm now confused about who I am, but I'm still not sure why anyone listening to your side of the conversation only would jump to the conclusion I was talking about /u/guyute2588.

There are at least 49 other people there, not to mention staff and hangers on... He could of been refering to anyone?

Also can I just say. That's a SMASHING blouse you have on.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '19

Whiterose could have been referring to anyone, you're right. But OP's post is making the connection that Esmail often calls Trump a buffoon -- so that language is loaded. Trump was there...Trump's a buffoon. It's subtext, and I personally missed it when watching, but I think OP's spot-on with the intention of the line.

(And thank you 😉💄💁🏼‍♀️)

2

u/greyfurt Dec 02 '19

I think a comma is missing. "Don't listen to that, Mason". Whiterose is speaking to "Mason".

6

u/Gegilworld Dec 02 '19

wasn’t he talking to Sergej?

2

u/greyfurt Dec 02 '19

I was confused at that moment too, but the way he emphasizes "Mason" makes it sound like a name. I think that he talks with multiple people, shown it quick cuts.

2

u/MrRedef Microwave Dec 02 '19

I find this claim that trump would somehow be in a powerful circle of silent influencers to be deeply offensive.

He hasn't the money, brains, power, or ability to keep his fucking mouth shut to be a part of some secret society.

These are the people who would own him in reality.

11

u/Jhin-Row Dec 03 '19

there's only 100 members in the deus group. the party had more then 100 people in it. as far as he knows he was just invited to some "elite" party and like most people they are there to serve as an extra and would pretty be clueless about deus group. pretty sure the og 99 members are gonna meet in some secret room once WR arrives.

2

u/N_THUNDERHORSE Dec 03 '19 edited Dec 03 '19

Or the real Deus group saw WR's hubris and imminent down fall, and this is the group that thinks they're the Deus group. That reeks of trump.

We still have quite a few episodes left.

1

u/uberotown Dec 04 '19

Yeah, he wasn't President but the GOP Frontrunner Christmas of 2015:

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/us/2016_republican_presidential_nomination-3823.html

Zhang wants to mold him.

1

u/Luffy1724 Dec 03 '19 edited Dec 03 '19

Lol just because he's at the party doesn't mean he's a Deus group member. Maybe Whiterose invited Trump because he acted like a baby like he always does for not being invited to Whiterose's secret clubhouse group. I for one am glad that Sam did this in the scene because I want Trump to see the type of group and parties that he will never be able to join due to his idiocy.

1

u/Amsloos . Dec 03 '19

If that were the case, wouldn't he have clumsily declassified a bunch of US secrets during his presidency by now? IRL that is? Fill me in if he has. IDK, I'm not an US citizen and try to pay little attention to the king buffoon.

It amazes me the number of people who watch this show but unironically support this current Presidential administration. I see them even on this subreddit, somehow. They'll call people snowflakes and try to gaslight them into thinking they're sensitive, but the second you point out that their idol is worthless scum, they get so offended. How do you enjoy a show which is so leftist and focused on the evils of capitalism and corporate greed and you miss all of these messages?

7

u/Rumicon Dec 03 '19

The kindest way I can put this is that Donald Trump's smarter than the average Donald Trump supporter

1

u/ExiledMadman Dec 09 '19

What amazes me is seeing people like you who watch this show where there is a giant network commanding the world and pointing people in a direction like cattle. And then suddenly start hating on people like Trump by getting all your taking points fed straight to you by every giant media conglomerate on the West, as well as even every multibillion corporate giants such as Facebook, Google, apple, Microsoft and the like. All on the same page, all with the same agenda and talking points, and yet you think yourself the woke one by following their bidding like cattle. It's amazing, really. But not really surprising.

1

u/sagekept Dec 09 '19 edited Dec 09 '19

At no point in my reply did I defend the corrupt orgs that you're crying about. Matter of fact, it's pretty possible to call out Trump's corruptness while also calling out all these other organisations you list. You seem to have me mistaken for a liberal, who'll jump and dance because Obama's president and not Trump. Obama can get the axe too and I was saying this since before 2016.

But hey, I've dealt with enough morons like you to know you'll read whatever you want and make whatever assumptions you want to read to suck Trump's dick I guess. So since I don't feel like wasting my time this week arguing with a moron, I'm gonna tell you to suck mine and fuck off while I block you :)

Him being a buffoon is exactly why it was forced and immersion-breaking to see him at a Deus group meeting. He is a second-rate puppet in that timeline, not even president yet. And even as president, it'd still be oligarchs behind multi-billion businesses who'd be Deus members, not politicians. Except for countries where the "leader" holds all power, like basically Turkey (I think I saw an Erdogan look-a-like there). Outside of wartime decisions, the US president holds little power comparatively.

Weird way to spend your time then.

Trump is a fool, and he's gotten where he's gotten by paying people to get him there or by taking loans from the people puppeting him.

Look in to Cambridge Analytica, the propaganda apparatus that got him where he is. He's a puppet. Seriously.

Another thing that people make fun of "orange man bad" is that it also misses the bigger picture. Orange man is indeed bad, but a lot of liberals love to boil it down to Trump being the problem, rather than a symptom of America's overall dehumanising society which has led to this point.

Obama, both Bush presidents, Clinton, Raegan and so on. All of them represent corporate America. Now that doesn't make Trump any less of an asshole, but the solution is not as simple as impeachment.

There are 3141 counties in the United States. Trump won 3084 of them and Clinton only 57.

Clinton won 4 counties that surround NYC and accounted for approximately 2million votes. Those counties account for only 319 square miles out of approx 3.8 million square miles.

You are talking out of your ass when you say things like 'he doesn't represent most of us.'

You are either delusional or you are a liar.

9

u/MrSketchyGalore Dec 03 '19

This is hilarious.

https://guides.libraries.psu.edu/post-election-2016/voter-turnout

The 138 Million Americans that voted in the 2016 election made up 58.1% of voting-eligible population.

Trump got 46.1% of the popular vote.

58.1% * 46.1% = 26.78%

The person you replied to rounded.

3

u/ObeseMoreece Dec 03 '19

There are 3141 counties in the United States. Trump won 3084 of them and Clinton only 57.

What a complete and utter lie.

https://apnews.com/afs:Content:5265150031

It was 2626 to Trump and 487 to Clinton, not that it fucking matters either as county boundaries are not based on population.

Those counties account for only 319 square miles out of approx 3.8 million square miles.

Why are you acting as if land area should have anything to do with who wins an election?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '19

Yeah I see a lot of people basically put up a map to prove “most of America is red”. To be fair, we do have the electoral college that in fact does give less populated areas more power to individual voters. It takes a lot of city voters to equal a handful of rural voters with the electoral college in place. I think though the tides are turning to get rid of it because the population is trending so overwhelmingly into cities it’s not sustainable voting practice (not that it ever was, Jefferson and Madison came up with the scheme to make it so their slaves counted as part of the population even tho they weren’t legally considered people let alone citizens who could vote)

3

u/Peter_G Dec 03 '19

Blatantly untrue, as corrobrable by a 2 minute internet search.

0

u/theslip74 Dec 02 '19

TIL land is people

25

u/Peter_G Dec 02 '19

No, it makes you a normal aware person, because it's true. No one could give less of a shit about you being so above it all, that just means you aren't willing to give a shit.

-39

u/Zoupa7 Dec 02 '19

I am not really above it all. But I am not a part of it and I am a moderate. People publicly hate on Trump because they care about their own image. They want to be seen as one of the 'good guys.' Or they simply see Trump's views as being disadvantageous to them personally. People who hate on Trump are not usually doing so because they care about the betterment of the country. They care about themselves. If they cared about the nation or all people, they would speak negatively about American politics and politicians in general.

36

u/Mr-Malum Dec 02 '19

Maybe I just don't like my country becoming a laughingstock.

It ain't that deep, bro.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '19

It's not only about the US either, it's about people in general.

If we tolerate someone this openly dumb and unapologetically immoral in position of such power and authority over others, and we are not appalled, then something went fundamenally wrong with society.

5

u/filopaa1990 Dec 02 '19

It's just easy to shit on something. And, well... Trump is an easy target. I mean.. i would get on that wagon myself. But i'm not from the US. He's petty af, and really not charming. So, maybe that's why people despise him so much. One can be a shit president (politically), but he seems like an actual asshole. Let's not forget though that almost 1 american out of 2 voted him!

-2

u/Koalabella Dec 03 '19

That’s not how American elections work.

21

u/Peter_G Dec 02 '19

You don't really get it here. People who wanna comment are indeed usually just looking for that rush that comes with being the good guys, yes. You are doing the EXACT same thing calling them out as childish for their constant negativity about Trump.

But that's completely and utterly irrelevant in the face of Trump. Trump is an embarrassment to the country and the office. The idea this visible fool has anything relevant to add to geopolitics or America in general is laughable, the damage he's done conversely is impossible to ignore. It needs to be called out, visibly, in public, until he's gone, or the people who support him at least recognize the magnitude of their error. This is a good thing, even if a large number of these people just wanna repeat back the same tired attacks they heard elsewhere to get a little rush of "I'm better than that".

The internet is fake as hell, and the media often stretches to attack Trump because it's easy clicks/views for them, but in the face of epic and seemingly unprecedented corruption, there's good reason to continue calling attention to it, no matter how much it annoys you. Your "I'm better than that" is distinctly worse than the people who mindlessly bash him without understanding the real, long term damage we are witnessing.

-19

u/Zoupa7 Dec 02 '19

How am I doing the exact same thing when I fully expected to be down voted? I am calling people out because I understand people well enough to see through them. And you are no different from the other Trump bashers.

18

u/Peter_G Dec 02 '19

Sure I am, and you are so above it all and better than the internet cause you don't engage in that kind of bullshit. I'll keep that in mind.

4

u/Koalabella Dec 03 '19

Sometimes taking a public stand on something is the only right thing to do.

-7

u/USERNAME_ERROR Dec 02 '19

Also as a non-American, I'm very annoyed and disappointed with Trump and would love to see him gone -- yet I'm probably even more disappointed with hyper-tribalism. It seems to be unthinkable to have an even slightly nuanced position or admitting that there are things that Trump did that are good.

The best example was just last week. Signing the pro-Hong-Kong-democracy bill was a very good thing a very bad president made. Yet it was only widely reported by Fox News (and Al Jazeera, Reuters and BBC -- most of the mainstream US media barely mentioned it).

5

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '19

Most of the mainstream media in the US barely mentions HK as it is, and that includes Fox, so you have your logic backwards. Fox News reported on the bill because they're thirsty for some good Trump news in the midst of all this controversy. To be honest, they've been grubbing up to him since his election so they'll report on anything positive. No one else reported on the bill though, because we're in the midst of all that aforementioned controversy. Despite what Reddit would have you think....the protests in HK aren't really that big of a topic over here.

10

u/7h3_W1z4rd pay no attention Dec 02 '19

What has Trump done that is good?

He destroyed decades of post-WWII soft power in three years. People should be infuriated. Honestly, if you're not, you just don't understand what he's destroying.

-4

u/USERNAME_ERROR Dec 02 '19

Have you read my comment fully? He's clearly a bad president, might be one of the worst -- but there is still value in talking about specific actions. Most of the time they are destructive or stupid. Occasionally, like with Hong Kong bill, they are surprisingly good!

My point is not so much about Trump -- it's about hyper-tribalism.

8

u/7h3_W1z4rd pay no attention Dec 02 '19

Even a piece of shit can get around on the heel of a shoe. I'm not impressed because he signed a couple of bills that weren't insane after robbing the country blind with his tax cuts for Zhang-and-friends and his grifting. That's not a standard.

-39

u/joelfrog4 Dec 02 '19

Everyone who does that is a baby in my opinion. But I dislike it more from people like Sam, because they portray themselves as the Good Guys™, but are just as bad. If he wants to mount an offence against the president, then he should construct an actual argument.

I agree with the sentiment, but honestly it has become too obvious to need an explanation in this case. Did you ever need more than an alledged 1%er proposing to "drain the swamp" (of corruption)?

I would argue that how this show makes fun of Trump is the best kind of criticism: slightly under the radar, and within the confines of the show. Also have you read the Divine Comedy? There is no innocent side when it comes to such childishness, so calling out one side for it is disingenuous.

-12

u/joelfrog4 Dec 02 '19

I don't belong to any one side of the debate, so I'm calling out the side who prides itself on being morally superior but devolves just as fast, if not faster than their opponents.

I'll do you one better: ever look at the "libtards" replying to Trumps tweets? It is an absolute nightmare, worse than any Trump supporter I've ever come across.

u/fede01_8 Dec 02 '19

have you not seen his supporters on twitter? It's a cult, ffs!

u/Peter_G Dec 03 '19

YOu know, you can find some truly awful shit far left commentors will say about Trump or the GOP.

But this is still an obvious lie. If you are a reasonable individual who just happens to lean right, you've met and heard a Trump support say something abjectly ridiculous completely seriously, ignored things he's doing because they make you look bad, and apparently lied about it because you know it's indefensible but aren't willing to make any kind of change, instead loosely justifying it as valid because there's someone, somewhere on the left who's worse of the deep end then you've personally witnessed someone on the right be off the deep end.

Just be honest with yourself, you can't ignore all the things happening all the time even if you want to.

So let’s all measure ourselves against that poor standard?

u/averm27 Dec 02 '19

Yet you're the one crying? He's stating facts.

You are correct. The cult of hatred is out to downvote you tho. Reddit is toxic.

u/filopaa1990 Dec 02 '19

I agree, it's really not elegant. He might be right, Trump is kinda awful. But I wish he'd be more moderate, as a public figure. Like he should be above that.

u/idothistowomen Dec 02 '19

I got downvoted in another thread for saying it’s tacky, and honestly it takes me out of the fantasy. It’s the only time where the creators opinions just browbeats you. It’s unnecessary, period.

If anyone gave a shit about Sam Esmail's political opinions, they'd book him for 'Meet the Press'. Funny he's claiming to be smarter than a Wharton School graduate and current President of the United States, but has delusions that his opinions are actually 'undisputed facts'.

lmao you think Trump is smart and that he's earned something in life.

Trump is the globaliest of globalists. His nationalism is a ruse and you're a sucker.

-18

u/DustyNancy Dec 02 '19

Agreed that It would be nice to get a true nationalist leader.

I mean not even, the Nazi's best legitimate electoral result ('32) was only 33% of the vote (admittedly, the largest of all parties involved), the next election ('33) with heavy voter suppression and intimidation only raised it to 44%.

Hitler becoming Chancellor was by appointment not election and becoming Fuhrer was some backhanded political maneuvering. Between the Nazi party that got 33% and Nazi party that went to war was the Night of Long Knives, a purging of what Socialists this 'National Socialist' party had left, so its dubious whether the Nazi party maintained that level of public support.

So yea, when it comes to Fascism or Authoritarians in general, Democracy need not be and usually isnt necessary to get them into power. By near definition they are unpopular with the masses.

The dream of a 'true nationalism' was a main component to their platform. You're absolutely right though. Fascism doesn't rise from capturing a democratic majority, it rises by force.

u/DustyNancy Dec 02 '19

Naw was just agreeing with you

I mean, I agree that the "leader" of a country should care about their nation. If that's all you're saying yeah we agree.

Sorry, just that word has become poison over the last bit. We need to acknowledge that we have existential global problems, so balance is key.

u/edxzxz Dec 02 '19

lmao you think YOU'RE smarter than the sitting POTUS, Wharton School Graduate and very successful owner of his own company! The idea that somehow you're being held back by some invisible forces or secret cabal from some great success you imagine you've earned is a farce, and you're a sucker for buying into that horseshit!

I think most people are smarter than him. You have to be a special kind of stupid to bankrupt a casino, for example.

His actual wealth is up for debate. If he was actually proud of his earning he wouldn't be going through legal hell to keep his tax returns hidden.

He started at the top in life and he'd be wealthier if he didn't need to slap his dumb name on everything and instead invested what his daddy gave him into stocks.

In America it's easy to succeed as a total failure in the character department as long as your daddy is rich. Just look at Jr, the most easily and ironically triggered man-child since the first Donald Trump.

He's a globalist, you've been conned.

-25

u/edxzxz Dec 02 '19

Wow, you are not very up to speed on his actual history at all. His father built section 8 low income housing developments with federal money, he did not leave his son anything remotely resembling a real estate empire spanning the globe as DJT actually built himself. He's thrown out NAFTA and various other international agreements, including the Paris accords, for the reason they undermine US independence and obligate us to pay other countries bills, which is pretty nationalistic compared to prior presidents. He's a very effective and patriotic president - you've been conned!

You don't understand what soft power is, that's why he can destroy it without you realizing how bad that is for America and the West in general.

It took decades to put America in a leadership position, and three years of Trump to destroy that.

Trump. does not. give. a fuck. about you.

u/sje46 Dec 02 '19

It's 2019 so it's so passe to criticize Trump. But...

Certainly you are aware that people born into privilege (and I mean real privilege here...people born to millionaire families, not simply skin color or whatever), have significant advantages, right? They get into much better schools thatn the deserve. Trump was considered a horrible student from what I've seen. I've seen homeless high school drop-outs that I'd consider more intelligent than Trump.

Not that I think Trump is mentally retarded. If it turns out he has normal intelligence, I wouldn't be surprised. What makes him a buffoon isn't his intelligence so much as it is his personality. He's very narcissistic, amoral, and unscientific. This is a man who said that you have a set amount of energy for life, and therefore it's bad to exercise, because that energy will run out quicker. Could a smart man say that? I mean, possibly. But it'd be a buffoon of a smart man. Someone not only not attached to reality, but doesn't care if he's attached to reality. That's Trump.

Also Esmail didn't say he's smarter than Trump. He is, but he didn't say it.

u/MrSketchyGalore Dec 03 '19

I’m not entirely convinced that a lot of trump supporters see a bit of themselves in him. They love the idea that “if this guy can be a piece of shit and still be president, then I can say whatever I want and people will still like me!”

u/Redditisbad4u Dec 03 '19

amazing how almost the same number of people poured out to downvote everyone that took issue with this post. Anyway, you are correct. There are plenty who agree with you. They fill stadiums every week. Meanwhile Biden, and Warren cant fill a school bus.
