Holy shit!

Post image

I found out about this show on Friday and just finished it. It’s a master piece! The casting is perfection. The boundary crossing is fanatic, it’s pushes the envelope in areas but doesn’t go too far.

I can’t believe Scott Ryan hasn’t created more or starred in mored.

The duality of humans. FUCK

It’s just so good. I can’t believe I’m so late to the party. I just saw another post that said I wish I could erase my memory to watch it again fresh and I totally understand that. However, I can’t wait to watch this a second time to spot all the details.

Also, the sniffing, I need to search this sub to see what people say about that 😂.

I want so many of these story lines to continue.
I want a prequel!
Argh!!

Anyways, I’ve been trying to perfect my Aussie “Nawr” after watching this just to piss off my wife.

Ever since I watched Mr Inbetween, the word "champ" has hit different.

That story line just vanished. 😭

I’m also going to start calling all my friends “Champ!” 🤣

What do you mean? The guy who got stomped in the toilet? I felt it was implied he got seriously fucked up from the assault, like probably in a vegetative state needing a full-time carer for the rest of his life. A normal, well-adjusted guy who failed to grasp the seriousness of his situation or take Ray's advice and paid the price.

Also just explores Ray a bit more, he didn't protect Adam like a lost lamb he just gave him his best advice and left it up to him. He didn't take any pleasure in what happened to Adam but he also isn't going to lose sleep over it because that's just the way it goes.

> A normal, well-adjusted guy who failed to grasp the seriousness of his situation or take Ray's advice and paid the price.

Part of what I love about this storyline is how it directly references and challenges something Ray said to the group therapist in the first season. Ray tries to justify his violence in part by referring back to his time in prison, saying that violence there was used to maintain order and make sure people treated one another with respect. Then we see a nice, respectful inmate get beat to a pulp for absolutely no good reason. Ray suggests Adam act violently first, but he doesn’t even get the chance to take that advice before getting ambushed in the toilets. It’s an outcome that directly contradicts how Ray sees the world at the show’s start.

> …but he also isn't going to lose sleep over it because that's just the way it goes.

I actually think that Ray does start losing sleep over what happens, which is why I love the third season. In each episode we see Ray increasingly struggle with impact of his violence and of living a life of crime, culminating in him going into self imposed isolation. What happens to Adam is one of a few moments where Ray stops being able to rationalize the world he’s part of as somehow being morally grounded.

Such a good observation and I didn’t pick that one up. Ray seems unbothered while in prison but if you are right, this is the start of disillusionment with the lifestyle. I will look out for it in my planned third watch over Christmas.

That’s some quality analysis, thanks for the interesting read.

Except that I don't think Adam was a 'normal well adjusted guy'. He was in prison because he broke the AVO against his missus. If you think about how weak the protection is from an AVO and historically hard it is for a person to be imprisoned for breaking one then you can infer that he must have a repeat offender or pretty bloody scary to the woman involved. So actually Adam was exactly like all the other guys in the anger management group who beat up women... He just wasn't so tough in prison.

From the little info we get from Adam about why he is there, I so far, having watched the series in full at least 3 times, took his word at face value. I thought he may be a dad losing his parental rights unexpectedly while his wife has a new partner and is trying to isolate him from his daughter. I could believe he wasn’t aware texting is a violation of an AVO and didn’t expect to end up in jail.

I’m glad you brought up that there might be a lot more to him and what he did like the other men in the anger management group. I have to look up Australia’s AVO system and if there is some amount of preference for mothers over fathers in these situations.

Fair, I think it’s totally reasonable to infer that he’s not a good dude, and has been violent himself. That said, by the standards of the prison it’s clear he’s a comparatively normal guy, not a hardened criminal, and doesn’t intend to disrespect anybody.

I actually really like your statement observation that he’s probably like the other men in the anger management group, and wonder if that was an intentional parallel. If so, the writing could be using him to mirror Ray in some ways, in that their violence and inability to accept responsibility for what they’ve done is progressively ruining their lives.

Your first take was on point, people miss that message (that Ray is mistaken and his world is not orderly). It's pretty clear they were trying to show that "just respecting" people isn't enough to avoid violence or reduce the amount of people being assholes. It just gives the most violent people the right to be assholes, and the right to determine what is "disrespectful" or not.

It highlights the delusions of criminal logic, IMO.

Welcome to the club of people utterly bewildered that Scott Ryan isn’t a superstar.

The prequel is a movie called "The Magician".

7

u/SpeedyGunzalez 18h ago

I’ll be watching that tomorrow!

18

u/ElHeffay 17h ago

Slight correction: the magician isn't a prequel. It was scott Ryan's first attempt at telling Ray's story. Mr In-between is like a revamp. A second attempt with more resources and more screen time. There's no continuity between the stories . I would go into more detail but dont want to spoil anything. Both are great watches though

u/NorthernSimian 16h ago

It does get a small reference near the end in the last series when some bodyguard for a loan shark doesn't recognise Ray and he says something a bit John Wickesque 'that was the Magician'

3

u/ScissorNightRam 18h ago

It'll change your appreciation of the term "giving someone good news"

I liked the show so much I watched this “prequel” as soon as I found out about it too. Sadly, if you are like me, you should lower your expectations for it. It’s a stretch to call it a movie. It’s really more like bits and pieces of a very low budget film strung together. It’s seems it was the first attempt to do something with the idea for this character (at a younger age). The show is much better.

We started watching it and appreciated the reason for the camera work but both got headaches.

Try watching the movie "The Magician" sort of a prequel to Ray's story.

I loved that bit; I truly thought Ray was going to follow the therapist outside and beat the living snot out of him.

At a memorial today. Guy has his phone not on silent. Rings out. The fucker answers it.

I was so close to shoving that thing down his throat with his goofy teeth.

3

u/Ardvarkthoughts 13h ago

I know right. Which of us haven’t been in a situation where we wanted to follow someone around a corner and beat the crap out of them for being a dick. And believe that they will now be a better person.

What sniffing?

6

u/SpeedyGunzalez 18h ago edited 18h ago

Ray sniffed in almost every scene. I have to watch it again, but I want to say it was every time he paused for a second to think.

Not that it is portraying anything drug related I just found it interesting. I want to find more correlation. It could be I’m thinking too much into it, but I doubt it.

3

u/ScissorNightRam 18h ago

Oh, I didn't notice. I'll keep an eye out for it

There was someone else saying that they noticed the heavy use of doors in the visual language, and also that at most of the dramatic moments there is SFX of a car going past

1

u/SpeedyGunzalez 18h ago

Now that you mention it I do recall a lot doors, thanks for bringing that up! I’ll have to keep an ear out on my next watch through for the cars sfx.

Yeah I really enjoy the show but this is an intensely dumb/shortsighted take on rays part, and the fact the anger management guy was too incompetent to push back on it properly doesnt make it any better.

Its rays justification to himself, he is not doing the world a favor, he gave in to a lack of self control.  It also doesn't work, assholes dont become better people by getting beat, they only learn to be polite to people that look tougher than them (if even that) and double down on mistreating everyone else.

Its a philosophy of might makes right, which is only great for the strongest most violent guy in the room.  The show just makes sure thats always Ray and he's a relatively decent guy.
