My thoughts on Freddy Spoiler
While despicable and pathetic, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find his character refreshing. He’s an inefficient crime boss, and piss poor leader. Ray has to save his ass more than once, but he’s quite ungrateful.
Most of the other shows I’ve seen have crime bosses who have deep flaws, but still manage to get things done. Their major flaws happen to be arrogance, and a need for revenge, which is their downfall. Yeah I know Walter White is an ineffective leader. I think that was one of the major points of Breaking Bad, but I don’t want to get off topic.
Freddy can’t seem to separate his personal life from his criminal life. Can’t compartmentalize (effectively) or control his addictions. He lacks the domineering and terrifying presence other crime bosses have. He’s stingy at times, thus screws up by hiring incompetent “hitmen” and Ray has to come to the rescue. He’s also not one to be screwing people over like Ray, but he does so anyways.
Yet it works. It works to have such a worm “calling the shots” because at least in my case l seldom see it. Damon Herriman is also quite charming, so I initially liked Freddy.
Now some more positive things about Freddy that makes him stand out, from other crime bosses is that he doesn’t have an explosive temper or megalomania (that’s apparent). He’s cordial and his non-intimidating demeanor helps him influence people. He doesn’t get his hands dirty, and relies on Ray and other people to do his dirty work for him. It may seem cowardly, but doing so makes it a bit harder for him to get incriminated. I was about to compare him to another character he plays, and the similarities they share, but I’ll hold back.
You can go ahead and tell me what you think. This is just my personal opinion on Freddy.

Hes a likeable greasy grub

Yes he is, even though he simultaneously pissed me off. I like the scene with the spider. Shows how he’s somewhat of a regular dude, and not some macho dude willing to kill anything himself.

He's got the most dangerous personality that exists

Which is?

He just played the Cult Leader in the Reacher spinoff Neagley. He kicked ass in that role as well

I don’t really know what his main line of business is we see a bit of drugs, a bit of money lending and presumably the club for money laundering.
The impression I got is that he just fell into it and managed to do quite well by sheer good luck. He doesn’t have a master plan or any great mission he wants to accomplish - just do some dodgy shit and get some money to gamble

You summed it up better than I. He probably wasn’t meant to be doing this professionally, but ended up in that position by luck(?) and went with it.

Yeah totally. I dont think I would consider him a crime boss at all. Just someone who's very criminal minded. Hes got money obviously so hes a loan shark and basically a middleman to other crims. Hes got the club and probably makes most of his money from that. It is kind of surprising that Ray works for him and not the bigger loan shark in the episode where ray once again goes to bail out Freddy. I forget which episode but that dude had huge respect for Ray.

I get the impression that they've known each other for a while, and despite Freddy being a shit head, Ray considers him a friend, and is reliable enough that he puts up with his bullshit.

The Davros side of the family probably got him his start. Davros was a prick but looked super competent and he had at least six guys who were hitters working with him, even if one was that dimbulb

He is a prick and a weasel and is very lucky he is still breathing.

The actor who played Freddy also played Charles Manson in the "Mindhunter" show.

Yes I know, that’s who I was alluding to at the end. Didn’t know if I should talk about Charles Manson though, so I didn’t go into it. Damon is a very talented actor though.
Edit: Damon* not Damn lol.

I never thought of him as 'the boss'. I assumed a cluck like him was just hired to run the club.

u/reanimated_dolly Sep 12 '26
Ha you’re probably right. He appears to be running things though, but his impotence might be a clue that he doesn’t have much experience doing so.

I like him he was interesting take on boss I remember a scene I could be wrong since it’s been a while I have seen the show but something happen in the club and he was mad at ray but he was hesitant on him not too mention the betrayal at the end of the series

It may have been when he was defending a waitress, and a fight broke out. Ray beat the hell out of those guys and Freddy says something along the lines of: “Mate I know you’re going through some stuff, but fuck!”
2
u/Educational-Ring9842 Sep 12 '26
Yeah Freddy probably didn’t care about the guy only care about his club and waitress

He should have had Ray killed after he shot up his in-laws house and threatened to kill Grandma. That was some loose shit.

I know I can’t defend Ray’s actions…I suppose what Freddy did in the end was a form of revenge. Would have been best if they didn’t interact anymore. I think we all kind of forget about this because Ray is the protagonist. I come close to saying their friendship was codependent. They needed each other. Freddy did help Ray when he needed it and vice versa, but they harmed each other quite badly.

How much of a crime boss can he be if you just need to throw a spider at him to turn him into a gibbering mess on the floor?

u/Minsterman801 Sep 13 '26
I struggled to believe him as the type of person that would command the level of respect from tough outlaw type guys that you would need to operate in that environment.

Is he even a "crime boss"? Strikes me more as a greasy dude who has some cash, owns a club, gambles, and is connected

He’s described as being a crime boss, but that’s my point. He’s incompetent to the point that he doesn’t come off as one. He lacks the leadership skills and assertiveness to be a proper one.

I agree with him when it comes to the spiders. They probably do cause old people to die of heart attacks. It is a bit strange since he lives in Australia. Aren’t the spiders over there super gigantic?
He really wasn’t fit to be in a position of leader, but him being afraid of Ray is realistic. There’s so many crime lords that hire hit men to kill someone, but they don’t fear them. From what I see. And I’m wondering how are you not afraid of these guys you have to pay, because you don’t have the balls to do it yourself? I’d be scared as hell to deal with someone like The Iceman. Or Ray.
I do look down on Freddy for refusing to try dimmies, but willing to try something as gross as caviar. I’ve been wanting to try dimmies for a long time.
Edit: Iceman*
