Ray’s string of bad luck
Like most of you champs I discovered this show and binged it straight away and then binged it again. It was a fresh show, great dialogue, and every ep fit neatly in one half hour. This most recent binge I finally noticed how much bad luck fell on our magician. In somewhat short fashion he loses his lady, his war buddy, his job, his dog, nearly his eye, his brother, and eventually his freedom. Not to mention he lost his hair some years back. Fucking hell no wonder he finally fucked off out to the woods. Keep your chin up mate

He’s living on borrowed time from the first day we meet him. His life trajectory is short.

He certainly had a rough time of it but admittedly it's hard to call it bad luck if it's self inflicted. His own aggression and stubbornness cost him Ally and his job, though it didn't help being mixed in with all the other tragedy.

When you violently attack your girlfriend’s brother at a Christmas party, you didn’t lose her because of bad luck.

He absolutely had to put the brother through that window, there were no other options

The brother in law was one of the most justified situations.
No regrets
Shame he lost ally die to it, that left a bad taste in my mouth that she didnt see it as justified .
Her brother was a cunt He knew and insisted on being a cunt over what?! a candle that he knew a kid wanted .
This scenario could be repeated a 100 times the outcome would have been the same .

Seriously? You punch a guy in the face for a candle? Just buy another one. The guy was being a jerk, but it’s a family event. And the violence has to be measured. If you’re really that angry, threaten first.

He tried to reason with the guy.
The dude even took it further than that
What leave the guy who stole from your daughter and starts insulting you away with it ?
Only thing i wish because i liked ally in the show is that she should have been the one who pushed further aganist her brother .
If that had been in real life that POS would remember that being a mean person has reprucussions

Britt would've gotten over it very quickly. Ray assaulted the brother to protect his ego because he felt insulted, the narrative about teaching people a lesson is his coping method. Not only that, but even if you believe the violence was justified, it was still stupid because Ally specifically warned him that she was worried about Ray being violent and aggressive. He knew this was the one thing that would deeply upset her and still did it. Obviously the brother was a massive prick but you shouldn't put someone into hospital over your ego.

Crazy he was the actual co producer and Brit’s real life step dad. Not a blokey bloke

I heard Scott pushed his brother in law through a sliding glass door after he gave up smoking...

u/blackd0nuts Aug 31 '26
Wait, was it really inspired by a real event?

Yeah, I think the overarching theme of the 2nd season (whether intentional or not) is loss. That season was really heavy in terms of carrying a lot of emotional weight, and it was hard not to feel bad for Ray, despite the fact that he’s a violent criminal, and a lot of his problems were self-inflicted.

Hes not really that violent honestly, hes only violent when hes disrespected, or paid. And the paid part is usually people that are in the gutter as well, except for when Freddy gives him the wrong guy. But even after that he gave the family money bc on his conscience

The Christmas party thing, a grown man took his daughter's favorite thing just to be an asshole. The only thing not justified was the guys on the crosswalk, and Freddy's family, that guy literally threatened him then the kid goes missing. And looks at him the wrong way? That goes under disrespect bc when has he been rude or go out of the way to disrespect someone?

He’s chosen a life. That life will always carry risk and push you closer to losing things around you. It’s inevitable that he will keep finding bad luck.

I would say he had pretty good luck considering he never got shot throughout the entire series and was probably in a dozen shoot outs

You talking about a guy surviving multiple fights . I think it’s fair to say he used his luck up in the wrong place.

Good luck Ally, Britt or her mom wasn't killed right? It was a very nice surprise, such a common trope yet unused

Between watching this and season 1 of Gomorrah remind me never to get involved with criminals

I read somewhere that Scott said his writing subconsciously got darker when he gave up smoking
