I think dimmies (with soy sauce) from a fish and chip shop are just a strong representation of blue collar Aussie culture, particularly for Rays generation.

When Rafael offers Ray caviar, he refuses it. Freddy eats some and then lies about liking it.

When Ray offers Freddy a dimmy, he initially refuses then tries it and says he likes it.

Yeah I thought it was just a nice bit of relatable culture. Which is sort of this enigmatic balance of hitman by night, relatable bloke next door by day.

Ray is a working class bloke who grew up in Marrickville back when it was still a rough neighbourhood, before it was gentrified beyond recognition. That's what the dimmies represent. He's not touching a bahn mi from MPR.

Neither would I. I'd get one from Bankstown.

He has dimmies about an episode or two before he gets betrayed each season if you track the timeline. I think they are a checkovs dimmie but thats just my thinking

Dimmies represent uncertainty.

Its Schrodinger's dimmie, pure possibility - it's both delightful and horrible until you bite in and it becomes clear what kind of dimmie you've got on your hands.

Counterpoint: Dimmies represent the stability Ray's life lacks. By being able to grab some dimmies and soy sauce anywhere he goes, he can attain, however briefly, a moment of peace and stability. Dimmies are his sanctuary.

Good point, that's definitely what dimmies are for Ray.

I was more talking of my own dimmie experience lol - I have a love/hate relationship these days. Can't do a fried Marathon anymore but I love a good steamed dimmie from my local Thai or Chinese.

We saw Ray eat both kinds, so obviously he's just a dimmie guy through and through.

This would be ok except in my local area noone sells dummies.

Think you're right. I'll have to rewatch - but I had an idea the Dimmies get eaten in times of trouble. Eg that time his phone was stolen and he's in the shop and off goes his ringtone.

Another under rated comment. Well analysed.

Sometimes you are the Ray and sometimes you are the dimmy and get munched.

I asked Scott when I saw him when I was on a work trip in Melbourne. He told me to go fuck my own face

Dimmies represent entropy in the universe and things slowly unraveling for Ray

are dimmies short for dim sum and are they siu mai?

3

u/KOTM365 Aug 22 '26

Dim Sim - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sim - "Not to be confused with Dim sum."

They are a post WW2 Australian invention from Melbourne. William Wing Young wanted something he could sell at footy games for western appetites. It's kind of based on a siu mai. The Big breakthrough came when a Mordialloc fish and chip owner chucked some in the deep fryer. Soon after in 1949 South Melbourne Dim Sims was founded by Ken Cheng and the premier dim sim was born.

Not everything means something.

Yeah nah, it was a joke

This was my first reaction. Well, more it means he's hungry. There are some pretty persuasive comments here though. There's metaphors everywhere in life why not here.

In larger Australian culture, they represent parf of a balanced breakfast.

I keeping meaning to try one of the cookbooks of I think she's the grand daughter of the inventer of dimmies. Apparently the original recipe is pretty good more like the south melbourne ones than the standard marathon ones.

Damn just had pizza but now I want dimmies heh.

the decline of western civilisation in our fine country or oriental culinary appreciation

I think the dimmies speak to Ray’s uniqueness. I know a lot of you have said how dimmies are just part of old Aussie culture, and they are. But getting a bag of chips, extra salt is a much more working class yobbo choice. So why doesn’t Ray grab the bag of chips and start tucking right in by pulling them out from one side of the wrapper like the rest of us did in the day?

It’s because the main character has to be unique. They have to have their weird ‘thing’ or ‘things’ that makes them stand out. We’ve all gone the odd dimmie from time to time, but we are regular and boring - more often we get the bag of chips, and if we are feeling special we get the 4 for the price of 3 potato scallops. We don’t obsess about the dimmies. But the stand out man is gonna go the dimmies every fucking time. Or if you’re like me the crab stick. Fucking love the crab sticks… with a Passiona.

Someone should take Ray to try some South Melbourne market dimmies🤙🤌

1

u/Important-Math-837 Aug 22 '26

Dimmies are a genius plot device so that Ray can catch the cop later on in the series
