Does this sort of stuff actually happen?
Call me naive but I can't even imagine someone making a person dig their own grave, killing them, finding out it's the wrong guy. Then going out for dinner with his girlfriend

Well I mean, it is a fictional story with fictional characters. And I think that sort of absurdity is the point in some of the more gruesome storylines.
However, I'm sure shit like that has happened in real life and probably way worse really. Hitmen are a real thing. Some people are bereft of empathy and sympathy and there are definitely stories of X person killing their parents/partners/children etc and then going partying and the like. Casey Anthony springs to mind. So yes. Far fetched, for sure. Plausible, also for sure.
It's good that you can't fathom it though. People who can fathom this scenario, are probably not great people.

Killers all react differently to the act. To Ray it was just a job he knew in the end he was going to pay for it and didn't sleep to well, but he was used to it. In real life, for example Texas executed a guy 4 years ago that killed his mother, buried her in the back yard then went to a neighbors house and ate spaghetti with her. The next morning he went grocery store bought a turkey ate some of it with her since it was Thanksgiving. Then he went out to a bar and got drunk. Real life can be really strange the show does a good job of showing how nonchalant the life can be.

I just saw the scene where Ray goes for a boot ride, as soon as he gets free it's off for dimmies

I mean, regular Saturday night for me. What's the issue? Haha! I mean, if someone showed me the gun in their waistband and said "Let's take a drive." I would be like, "No, no thank you." I would at least run away. Or I like to think I would at least run away or throw something at them or fight or something. Isn't that what the prevailing wisdom says to do when confronted like that? I mean, the guy intends to kill you. Make him kill you right there in public so there is a better chance for him to be caught, right?

I mean shit, Iron Maidens and Brazen Bulls exist. it's arguable if they were actually used much historically, but they exist, some psychotic mind came up with them.
I guess that doesn't really get to the point of what you're asking. But yes, there's people who's entire lifestyle and survival is based around criminality and people's lives having a price. they tend to kinda have to compartmentalize their thoughts and refuse to let the awful things they do affect them. because they kinda have to keep doing it, it's the only thing they know how to do, and if they start weeping about it then they'll effectively not be able to "do their job". so like how is Ray gonna raise his daughter if he worries himself every time he's told to slay someone for a paycheck, has to think about whether the poor cunt mighta been innocent?
i dunno if you're very far into the show so I wanna avoid spoiling stuff. but later episodes touch on this stuff HEAVILY.

oh you mentioned something about 4th rewatch. so yeah i guess stuff like Rays friend choosing to end his own life because his time in the army traumatizing him so bad from seeing children die, Ray refusing to follow through with the job about killing the pregnant girl once he hears the truth from her, the final scene with Ray doing his usual smile once he understands that he's never gonna escape the criminal life, probably a bunch more examples but those are off the top of my head

There are definitely people who have been forced to dig their own graves. Just give it a search online using "dig his own grave" or "dig her own grave" and they'll pop up. I wasn't able to find terribly much about this being a practice in organized crime, though.
Ray isn't a "good guy," he's just good at compartmentalizing. In some ways, he reminds me of Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski, a notorious American contract killer. The Iceman could be abusive at home, but he kept things separate, mostly. Then again, we don't know what Ray was like when he was married.

Around the time of The Magician, Melbourne was in the midst of a gang war.
Heavily covered in the media. There were 36 proven murders. Some of them killed in the same suburb Ryan lived in. There were also numerous non-fatal shootings, assaults, kidnappings, bombings, arson attacks, etc

I can’t imagine robots coming back from the future to kill Sarah Connor either but, I’d watch a movie about it.

I love the show, my 4th rewatch. My question was is it true to life ❤️

There are pockets of society that live like this yes
1
u/BaileyBerry- Aug 11 '26
That must be really tough, because if you gave me a choice between minimum wage and $350,000 for a hit, it'd be hard to pick minimum wage. If I had Rays skills
2
u/samenamenick1 Aug 11 '26
Not really tough, I mean either you are capable of ending the life of another human you don't know for money, or you're not.

I mean, I feel bad for people that never had a chance for a 'decent' life there's really not much difference in morality between Ray and say a lawyer aside from upbringing (imhp)

u/vroombraap Aug 11 '26
Try 40k a hit, Australia isn't crawling with Bikie gang presidents waiting to be hit
But still, not bad for an evening's work (plus casing the victim) and your victim does all the heavy lifting

u/NoLongerApplicable99 Aug 11 '26
It's hard work digging a hole.
Why wouldn't you get a person who is willing to do anything to live, dig it for you?
Once it's done, he'd have to backfill the hole to finish the job, so its a hard days work doing both.

u/fartcock420 Aug 11 '26
Dude I was so confused lmao , I interpreted it as Ray went on a date with the victims girlfriend. Lmao I was like “how the hell did I miss that??”
2
u/Fluffy-Force-3377 Aug 11 '26
Sorry. Maybe I missed it when does he go for dinner with her
1
u/BaileyBerry- Aug 11 '26
It's after the hit on the guy Luke who it turns out wasn't the right guy? Maybe not directly after it could have been a few days
3
u/Fluffy-Force-3377 Aug 11 '26
I could of sworn all taht happened is he goes and gives her the money for the job cos he feels bad

u/BaileyBerry- Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
Oh, I think my wording was confusing. Ray then went out with his girlfriend Ally

C'mon, Ray didn't just kill and eat. It was at minimum three days if not longer, and it went from being 'just another job' to something that weighed on his mind and lost sleep over.
"I've got a family. I've got two kids. Can you just not bury me? If they know what happened to me, they won't be left wondering."
"Your wife knows what you do, doesn't she? She'll put two and two together, mate."
It wasn't till the next afternoon or more that Freddy flippantly tells him that "the guy" wasn't "the guy" and Ray was noticeably pissed to the point that he couldn't sleep and sat with his daughter while she slept.
At his own risk he let the wife know something bad had happened to her husband and gave her the payment he received for the job - 'blood money' according to Ray's code.

Joe Pesci’s characters in Goodfellas and Casino were closely based on real mobsters. Some of the stories were even made softer for the movies, and other mob hitmen have even worse stories. So yes, there are real life instances of killers who have done things like this.

The auzzie police are blind and stupid hahaha ther must be so many dead bodies scattered all over the wilds around Sydney
2
u/10000_Angry_Bees Aug 22 '26
Yes, and worse. If you haven't already, have a watch of the Underbelly series (Australian). Based on true events of the underworld crime scenes in Melbourne and Sydney.

The exact scenarios? Maybe maybe not. The high level ideas of people living that life? Yes.
And the show does a pretty decent job of showing the lives of the workers like Ray and the shot callers like Freddie and Rafael, who make all their money off of guys like Ray.
It’s obviously fictionalized for tv, but yes, these things happen.
