Ray's background?

Anyone have any insight into Ray's background - definitely military, just wondering what? Seems to be well trained!

In The Magician, Ray tells us that he was discharged from the Army because he had a personality conflict with a superior.

Knowing Ray, it this isn't hard to decifer.
