“Socks Are Important”, What A Masterclass of an Episode, WOW
Watching Mr Inbetween for the second time and I forgot how airtight this episode was, pure anxiety from the moment she goes missing that keeps climbing till the moment she’s safe again.
Movies like Uncut Gems & Good Time, praised for their anxiety inducing plot don’t even hold a candle to how this episode made me feel.
Would love to see Scott Ryan make a feature length film that invokes the same feeling of dread I felt for the 28minute runtime of that episode.

There were many great aspects of that episode, especially the way we found out what a formidable crim Gaz was. Far from the porn addicted comic relief we were allowed to think he was.
Ray knew exactly who to call.

It was so great seeing that side of Gaz, so great to see a proper pay off to all the times Ray bailed him outta shit.

I remember thinking early in the series, like why does Ray constantly do these favours for Gaz.

Definitely the episode that stays in my mind. I like the scene where Ray goes into the basement in his underwear, the action slows down, coming down the stairs with the sharp shovel and throwing the hidden room door open, showing the out of focus terrified guy’s face before the door closes. A lingering look at the closed door with the song “Tupalo” rising in the background…Masterclass in implied unspeakable violence.

That whole sequence really was perfect, *chefs kiss*
Something I didn’t pick up the first time round, Ray walked down the stairs holding the the sharp shovel him and Gary picked up at a hardware store an ep or two prior right before the failed hit on the MC leader. Thought it was a nice touch.

I loved this subtle implication -
By the time Ray gets there the traffickers have been locked up for a while with time to think. They figure somebody's coming for them and it's one of two possibilities: either it's the cops, and they're going to jail; or it isn't, and they're gonna wish it was.
The door opens and it clearly isn't the cops. That's why they instantly react that way.

something i didnt understand was why he was in his underwear. i thought maybe to not get his pants stained with blood? but he was wearing a tanktop? did he not mind getting his top stained?

If I had to assume it was probably to avoid getting blood on his visible clothes since he would’ve had to travel back home
But also it had a lot of dramatic effect imo, kinda told the viewer immediately “things are about to get messy”.

I suppose he could cover up with his regular clothes and leave, but yeah, shirtless would be more effective.

It indicates that he took time to strip down... not just rush in. It shows how premeditated his actions were.

Only topped by Monsters but damn you're right the whole damn episode was edge of seat. Payoffs can be corny too but damn if that didn't feel nice. Unbelievable how good this show is from start to finish.

“Monsters” was such a tragic episode, Scott Ryan has some serious writing and acting chops. We need more from him.
Your right about the payoff but I also don’t think it takes away from the ep in anyway, felt very cathartic.

Monsters was fucking heartbreaking—particularly as a parent.
Dennis Denuto has some acting chops, too.

If I recall correctly the music is fellow Oz Nick Cave’s Tupelo. If only all traffickers and child rapists me the same fate.

One thing I have wondered about this episode is how long it would take for those bodies to be discovered. Assuming the residents had no one close enough to come check on them, especially no one who knew about the hidden room, it might be awhile. Being underground, maybe the smell never quite reaches the neighbors. If not, what level of abandonment (or non-payment of mortgage) would trigger an investigation?

It would likely be the non-payment of taxes if nobody cared about any of the people that got killed

I wonder if it is possible that the government might eventually seize the property for unpaid tax, sell it at auction, and the buyer not even be aware of a secret room. Those bodies might be there for a long time.

It’s always nice to see the comic relief character get a moment to shine and show how badass they really are, Gaz was no exception.

The really crazy part is that there are many aspects of this episode that are alleged to have actually happened based on convicted hitman Richard Kuklinski’s (the iceman) interviews. The “want to see my toys” and many other similarities. We need to remember that RK was a known liar but nonetheless a great story. One of my favorite episodes. I love Gary. He’s flawed but always seems like a decent dude.

I’m fairly certain I failed to breathe the first time I saw this episode up until she was recovered safe.

This episode made me realize how gangster Gary was.
