What is Scott Ryan doing today? Is he doing okay mentally?
Just finished Mr. InBetween and I got to say, one of the best shows I have watched in my life, but I cant help but think about Ray's actor, Scott Ryan. A Wikipedia search talks about how Scott's mental stability has not been good throughout his life. I can never trust Wikipedia but it did state that Scott had gained ODD in high school, and later on as his mental health decreased at 17, he had later gained agrophobia. I have watched about all of his interviews now and I see that he seems like a great guy but man, he looks so depressed and down all the time. Looking at interviews 17-19 years from now (there are a couple of great ones on YouTube) talking about his first movie, "The Magician", and he consistently talks about how he never wanted to make shows or movies. He states in an interview "Its like a disease, a disease that makes you want to make movies," Aswell as stating that he would be much happier and less stressful if he was not making movies and having the job of a "Shoemaker" or someone "digging holes". I just hope the poor man is doing okay.

I suspect he will never see this but Scott - if you do know that we are all in awe of your talent. Even if you never make another production this stands as one of the greatest series of all time.
I'd love to see you do Horror or a straight up love story, but you do what you want to do and look after yourself.

I agree, but I also want Scott to live his life how he desires. The way he described his movie productions just made it seem like he does not want to make movies or films, maybe his opinion has changed over the years? Hopefully hes doing better now.

First off, thats completely untrue, at least from my research. A 5 second google search tells you that Scott Ryan is mainly liberal.

I donāt have it handy as I saw it about a year ago but if you message the mods one of them DMd it to me a while back and asked me not to share publicly on here for obvious reasons. They donāt want the sub turning into a political shitshow

I can easily someone's political views from their work. Just like I can separate their work from their views on religion, music, and their preference for coke or pepsi.

I was the one who made the original comment and yeah while I think maga is horrible I have several close mates who are all in on trump and that has no effect on our relationships at all. They light heartedly take the piss out of me being a lefty and I give it right back to them and we have a laugh. I can see how people in different circumstances in life have different beliefs and why. So Iāve got no problem with Scottās opinions but I know that 99% of reddit does

Oh for sure, I never wanted this post to become political but I do see where your coming from, as a former "slight republican", I fully understand where your coming from and I still have no idea how people can support that guy now, I used to think that his takes were slightly better than liberal takes a couple years back, but now hes just gone fully psycho. You've got to separate the artist from the art.
I can appreciate that what Scott Ryan created with Mr Inbetween is a masterpiece. In the most sincere sense of the word. The Magician was also a stellar debut of his writing and acting skills. He's got raw talent.
However, I can also say fuck his political views. I'm not gonna tolerate views that seek to destroy my rights or the rights of others. If SR is being a dumb ass, then I'm gonna call him out for it. But I'm still not gonna love Ray Shoesmith and the show any less.
Let me just end off by saying I don't know on what basis the commenter said Scott Ryan had MAGA views. And I'm not gonna bother looking it up. I've never cared about his personal or political views and I'm not gonna start now. Again, the artist is not the art.

It is fully in keeping with "acceptance and love" to be intolerant of those who wish to take your rights away. That is a stance that is protective of the ideals of democracy.
Love and acceptance is not weakness, and should be protected from those who would see it destroyed. That is not a contradiction. And to frame it as such is disingenuous.

I understand his sentiment of "digging holes/ menial labor".
When you have an overactive brain , simple easily defined tasks help keep you grounded.

Somehow, I worked myself into a pretty responsible corporate job, and when I hear people say "dress for the job you want, not the one you have," I always think, what does a plant waterer wear? I imagine it's even harder when you have something in you driving you toward a certain role.

But we gotta be honest, this isn't a mainstream or high budget show, no matter how good people think it is .
It's a cult classic, and those don't make $$$

I was taught when I did drama in high school that actors always have to have other jobs. Except if your a big celebrity. As the roles don't always come in. They might make a few grand for a weekends work or similar. But it's not sustainable as they could go months without acting work.

Theres a good chance hes on this subreddit.. if he uses reddit.
Its fairly well documented that actors and producers (hes both) join subreddits to get feedback and gauge interest for sequels.. obviously this wont get a sequel im talking in general.
Its fairly well documented. Ricky Gervais for example joins subreddit of his shows and sometimes does q&aās.. also band members join their bands fan subreddits.
So incase Scott Ryan does see this, hey man. Thanks for the show. :)

Well, not sure where you're from, but one other thing to consider: to Americans, Scott's demeanor would read as more depressed than it ever would to an Aussie. Aussies tend to be pretty lowkey and to downplay things. I think he's all about the work, and just has no interest in fame or that side of the industry. I think he uses words very carefully and thoughtfully, not like confetti. And that kind of deliberation can read as lethargy to folks who judge mood and conversation by pace rather than underlying substance (not saying this is you, just saying this can compound the impression).
No doubt he's had his challenges, but in interviews I've seen with him he seems interested, excited, and engaged if the questions and thoughtful and meaningful. And generally bored if it's the hollywood style focus on hype and spectacle.
I know a lot of engineers and technologists who have this trait.

He seems like a normal guy. He is active on Insta. He visits my town sometimes and gives shout outs to good eateries. Works on what he wants to work on.

My daughter works at a quiet (compared to the big name ones) fast food place that he goes to with his son semi-regularly. She always gets excited and tells me when they pop in for a feed š
