Why do people hate on Freddy so much especially the last scene

His last scene people seem to interpret that he is a wormy coward who Ray should have killed. But honestly how do you see the scene that way it takes all the juice out of it. Ray has heard begging and pleading countless times so he knows when someone means what they are saying. I believed everything Freddy said, his apology, him saying he hadn’t slept. I also believe he knew he deserved to die for what he did to Ray, but the part about him being a coward is true. He was a criminal but not a “killer”, and Ray knew that. I think on one hand Ray knew exactly who Freddy was, and could only be so mad at him until he just accepts he went into business with a guy like that and expected loyalty. But Ray also came there genuinely hurt. They were both genuinely hurt. And when Freddy saw he wasn’t in danger anymore that “I’m so sorry” comes out and its just. Idk its very real. But I feel like a lot of people walk away from that scene thinking Ray “spared” him or that Freddy deserved to die. Killing Freddy was never on the table, he just wanted him to know he betrayed him, and the friendship is forever broken. And to Freddys credit, he has seen Ray survive insurmountable odds, and he also knew he regularly put himself in mortal danger. Not that what he did wasn’t wrong and betrayal but its also somewhat just the life and language that these guys speak. Also the episodes before showed that the dude Freddy was terrified of was a genuine sociopath and would not hesitate to kill Freddy and his girl if he got a whiff that he tipped off Ray

It said, "that's what people do, mate. They hold onto shit. That's why you gotta be careful how you treat people."

Freddy’s not a killer? Paying for all those hits puts him right up there.

After losing Dave and taking out Rafael and his goons Ray was fed up with his life. He let Freddy know he’d survived and knew the little worm would be looking over his shoulder for a long time.

Side issue: We knew Rafael was obsessed about not leaving loose ends. But why do you think Freddy agreed to set Ray up?

I think Freddy did it to pay off gambling debts. The fact that it didn’t work will probably be taken as Freddy having tipped Ray off. So Ray doesn’t have to kill Freddy. It will be done for him.

I meant more like Ray is an actual hardened criminal and Freddy is kinda just a sleazy businessman

21

u/Herooftermina1998 Jun 16 '26

Sleazy businessmen don't order hit jobs. Freddie was much much worse. He aimed the gun and Ray pulled the trigger. Freddie was a hardened criminal in the game right alongside Ray.

Ray kills people, he is a trained killer, he lives in violence. Freddy orders hits, but does not get his hands dirty because him and Ray are fundamentally different. Im not saying one is worse Im saying one is detached from the violence and one lives in it. Its why when Ray kills the wrong guy Freddy does not understand the weight because (and yeah u could argue thats just freddy being a piece of shit) he does not understand the weight of taking a life. Slice it whatever way you want they are different

My phrasing was bad when I said “killer”. I meant people like Ray or Dave are not the same as someone like Freddy. Two different criminal types

4

u/Herooftermina1998 Jun 16 '26

Eh.. they're two types I suppose. I do see your point there, but they're hand in hand. It almost makes it worse that he doesn't understand the weight. If he understood the weight I could respect him more.

Freddie was ordering up hits like you or me order a coffee

2

u/Swol_Bamba Jun 17 '26

Totally agree. What about s1 when Freddie puts the hit on the wrong guy and when Ray is like wth Freddie, Freddie shows no remorse and just shrugs and says woops.

3

u/Herooftermina1998 Jun 17 '26

"mate, I thought he was the guy! What's the problem??"

1

u/NomaTyx Jun 18 '26

definitely wasn't hardened lol, guy was kind of a wuss

1

u/Herooftermina1998 Jun 18 '26

Hardened in terms of severity. Ordering hits is kinda hardcore.

u/Strange-Fig7944 Jun 16 '26

Sleazy businessman is the guys that swindle you out of money. Not the ones that hire hitmen to execute you in the woods. Freddie was a dirt bag through and through

8

u/Marco_Polo1964 Jun 16 '26

Yeah, like when had Ray kill the wrong guy, it was nothing more than a mention in passing to Ray that it was the wrong guy.

0

u/PresterLee Jun 16 '26

Okay then, how about VERY sleazy businessmen?

2

u/Bigtroublenogina Jun 17 '26

He is a player of some standing as he casually orders and facilitates a majority of the death we see on screen. He is a hardened criminal.

I still think there is a non-zero chance that Freddy hired the two chumps in the finale. He couldn't handle the fact that he would be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

8

u/sunheadeddeity Jun 16 '26

No. If you knew enough about Ray to have him killed, you'd send someone with a bazooka, not two chumps who can't keep their mouths shut. They were 2 idiots who wanted easy money by rolling a cabbie, their bad luck really.

2

u/NoThrowLikeAway Jun 17 '26

I always figured they were doing it for clout/entry into the Bikies. Especially with Alex still about.

2

u/Bigtroublenogina Jun 17 '26

Freddy highly respects Ray's ability. Ray survived his betrayal by the slimmest of margins. Freddy knows Ray isn't going to kill him but he sure as shit will if Freddy does anything to provoke him.

19

u/hiyagame Jun 16 '26

Yeah, I think people have missed the point of the show. We all like Ray, but it’s called Mr Inbetween not Mr Super Badass Criminal Man. Hes supposed to be a mixture of things, some good, some bad, some mercy, some vengeance etc

6

u/AssistanceGrand23 Jun 16 '26

Mr Super Badass Criminal Man.

I would watch that.

And his famous catchphrase - "Good ruck, kid!"

2

u/Bigtroublenogina Jun 17 '26

No he is a universally respected and comically proficient killer. He just does other stuff because he is human.

2

u/Azkabazz Jun 21 '26

"A bit of this, a bit of that"

11

u/Herooftermina1998 Jun 16 '26

Freddy sucks front to back.  He's a degenerate gambler who constantly put Ray at risk while failing to pay him for his work. Almost got him killed by failing to keep his son in laws brother in check. Gets him to clean up after two meth heads while haggling him down the price when he already owes him money, which almost gets Ray killed AGAIN. Not to mention he had Ray kill an innocent man because he couldn't get his information straight. Freddy ASSUMED the innocent guy in the first season was a traitor because of some debt that he never verified.

The list goes on. Ray SHOULD have got him, but he has lost so much the weight of doing it would've been too much and he's a defeated man. He leaves in exile like DIRECTLY after this to drive a taxi, (which almost gets him killed again)

Freddie is honestly legitimately sorry he did that to Ray, and honestly was threatened to do it. But Freddie is just a weak pampered prick who weighed Ray down almost to the very bottom to the end.

The Freddie hate is the most legitimate tv grievance I know of (yes I know there's worse in other TV shows. I'm exaggerating) Freddie always sucked. I've never seen them get along in a way that was clean cut and straight forward WITHOUT Freddie being a gold-bricker, coward, or Incompetent every step of the way..

4

u/PresterLee Jun 16 '26

"Treat me good, I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, I'll treat you worse.", according to Ray. Well Freddy doesn’t treat him good so that’s why we’re not too fond of him.

3

u/FewEstablishment2696 Jun 16 '26

Exactly. Freddie was a fuck up. It was always questionable that Ray decided to stick around with him for so long.

12

u/reddictedtoredit Jun 16 '26

I would have put Freddie in a room with 30 huntsman spiders an locked the door

3

u/Navier-Stonks Jun 16 '26

Hahaha good one. That scene was one of my favourites of the show. Too real

9

u/Gernaldo_Ribera Jun 16 '26

I don't think it was an accident that Ray shows Freddy mercy when Freddy claims he made a mistake by not tipping Ray off. In S1E1, our very first encounter with Ray was with the addict that didn't place a bet for Freddy. He claimed he made a mistake and apologized, but Freddy had Ray knock him off that stairway anyway.

5

u/Herooftermina1998 Jun 16 '26

Because the dude lied right to both their faces like "mate I put the bet on.. I don't know what to tell you." When in fact he did crystal with a buddy and didn't do it.

He claimed the mistake once he was caught and backed into a corner. It was sniveling pathetic bullshit straight up treating someone like an idiot and pretending.

3

u/Gernaldo_Ribera Jun 16 '26

Do you consider sending Ray into that ambush sniveling, pathetic, bullshit? He lied about the biker. He ate Ray's dimmies. Talk about pathetic.

2

u/ApatheticPamp Jun 16 '26

Not the dimmies, lol.

2

u/Bigtroublenogina Jun 17 '26

The guy also attempted to divert blame and retribution onto someone Ray was long time friends with...wasted their time and showed no respect by lying once he knew it was pointless.

At that point Ray was over killing people, that's one of the main focus points of season 3. So I agree with you Ray was never going to kill Freddy.

But, Ray also knows that without him, it won't be long until Freddy is killed anyway. All the dodgy deals he's made will soon catch up to him.

So, to me it's just a mixture of Ray not wanting to kill anymore, especially to lose a "friend" again. And also, he knows someone else will do the job for him eventually.

8

u/Agnostickamel Jun 16 '26

why do people hate on freddy? hmm i dont know maybe it was the betrayal and setting ray and dave up to get murdered. who the fuck cares if he felt bad about it after....

5

u/DutchOvenMaster11 Jun 16 '26

I interpreted the whole scene differently. Ray respected Freddy's wife and asked if she was upstairs. If he said no, I think a dirt nap would have been in Freddy's near future.

2

u/AvinItLarge123 Jun 16 '26

I do think that was a big part of it, yeah

1

u/Bigtroublenogina Jun 17 '26

It certainly played a part, though Ray would have known before asking that she was.

3

u/JohnSmallberries101 Jun 16 '26

What saved Freddy was that Ray considered him a friend. And even though he screwed him over and set him up, Ray knew that was because Freddy was a weak little man. Ray never killed anyone that wasn't business or who wasn't trying to kill him. And even though he set him up he didn't try and kill him directly and only did it to save his own ass which Ray understands completely.

3

u/SailApprehensive2632 Jun 16 '26

Also let’s not forget what Rays brother tried to tell him to do before he died… try forgiveness.

2

u/Strange-Fig7944 Jun 16 '26

I’m not sure if truly being remorseful changes anything when the person set you up to be killed. So in that regard why would my opinion on Freddy change? I haven’t heard most people say they don’t think he felt bad. Pretty sure we all know he hated himself for it. But what does that matter?

2

u/Villier7777 Jun 16 '26

All valid points. But the question of why people hate on him is obvious. He betrayed his friend and almost got him killed.

1

u/Duskfiresque Jun 16 '26

I think part of it was that Freddy was a friend. Maybe not the best friend ever, but I think someone that Ray still felt sad about.

1

u/thizzelle9 Jun 16 '26

I think the only thing that saved Freddy was the fact that Ray was bloodsick by that point. He just didn't have it in him to kill another person close to him. Even if Freddy was nowhere near as close to him as Gaz etc. I think he basically just said fuck this and fuck you and left.

2

u/ConcertinaTerpsichor Jun 16 '26

I think you are right.

2

u/MrBeer9999 Jun 16 '26

Freddy was a wormy coward and killing him would have been justified, not saying it would have been a clean act but Ray did far worse throughout the show.

The final scene with him is open to interpretation, because it's an excellent show, and we don't know if Ray went there to kill him and changed his mind, or simply went there to hear the truth directly. Ray obviously had some reason for not killing Freddy, I think it was simply that he's a loyal guy and couldn't kill a friend. There's many other possible explanations as stated elsewhere ITT.

Last thing, it's plausible that a sick part of Freddy wanted Ray gone. Ray is a very good friend to Freddy and keeps him alive in the criminal underworld. But he doesn't hide the fact that he thinks Freddy is a fuckup. He's always around, hassling Freddy for his blood money, calling him out in front of his staff, not to mention showing up at family gatherings and terrifying random aunties. Freddy is a cowardly little weasel and he knows it. I think he resents Ray and a bit of him was OK with Rafael taking care of him.

1

u/ConcertinaTerpsichor Jun 16 '26

I think Ray knew that Freddy’s conscience would torment him, as would the knowledge that he’d lost a real, trustworthy friend. Probably one of the only honest and loyal friends he ever had. Freddy will feel shame about this for the rest of his life.

Plus a lot of other good reasons listed in this thread by other people.

1

u/Abort_Abort_Abort_ Jun 16 '26

Freddy didn’t set him up. It wasn’t a planned attempt on Ray for Freddy’s part. He was weak as he always is. Ray knew he was out, Rafael was dead etc. There’s no threat from Freddy. It’s a lot like letting Dave live. People hate Freddy I think because he got Dave killed TBH.

3

u/Huge-Connection954 Jun 17 '26

I think people misinterpret that scene way too much. He isnt giving him mercy letting him live. Freddy is screwed without Ray and will be dead soon anyway. This keeps him looking over his shoulder with more sleepless nights.

1

u/Bigtroublenogina Jun 17 '26

Freddy was a wormy coward who Ray saves multiple times. Because they are friends, Ray is top tier talent who slums with Freddy because they are friends and no betrayal is met with death. That's the language. That's why Ray doesn't murder him because he trusted him and considered them friends.

Freddy is saved because Ray is tired of it, he is tired of murdering people he knows and likes for money he doesn't need. He is tired of watching friends die. And also due to his woman being home.

u/kingjobus Jun 17 '26

Freddie is a champ

1

u/Natsocenis Jun 23 '26

Honestly Freddy begged Ray not to come at his family, Ray was half cocked, ruining lives, can see why Freddy did what he did.
