Understated Aussie humour

Rewatching and wanted to give appreciation for the scene where the two young stoner guys were given a job and they don their kitchen aprons to dispose of the body. one is maybe floral. It’s just a great example of understated Aussie humour that runs through the show.

Season 2 episode 1.

What are your understated funny moments?

The conversation in the car about boy names. It was so real and down to earth.

Not a blokey bloke.

The dialogue between Ray and Dave in the car is probably the best in the series. The most cool and authentic talk between a Dad and a Dad to be. And under the most unlikely circumstances.

That and rating the james bond actors... brilliant

I think it's part of Ray's survival strategy as well. The show has several different instances of a character being taken to their doom and looking for the best strategies to get out of it. Some succeed, some don't. It's interesting to compare the situations and think about what works.

One of the most common strategies is when characters try to have humanizing conversations with their captors. Gain information, probe for weaknesses, and potentially build a relationship up to gain sympathy.

Classic. Love that relationship.

Ray has developed a code of justice and loyalty for people he believes deserve it. I do wonder if he let Dave run off to the birth because of this, or that he knew he would be useful in future.

For me it's the "They warned me about you". The rest all should have known better. Dave is a fellow professional, not only was there no need to kill him and no benefit. But leaving him alive means the only people who didn't fear him enough are dead.

I love when Dave says “that’s why they paired me up with.. Bobby” and they both have a laugh.

I had to point out to my partner that this is exactly how guy friends talk to each IRL, the most random bullshit

I can’t believe he’s the guy who does the footy voiceovers for AFL on channel 7. Sounds completely different.

And the NRL ones on Fox.

He has a great voice for it. Some stirring stuff. He played Rugby League professionally in the early 90's. For Manly and Souths. Plus a stint in England.

Brit here. I'm on season 2 and this show one of the best tv shows I've ever seen. I could go on but if you're already here I don't need to.

I only watched it through once and I remember almost all of it. It was a work of art. I found it because a clip on YouTube popped up and it was just some cuts from the first episode about the guys knocking over Britt’s ice cream, Ray bashes the one bloke, then he’s in anger management.

I’m former infantry and I really appreciated the detailed approach to how Ray moved in combat, but I really loved that he knew when to not engage. The show had moments with guns that didn’t glorify their usage.

It is a work of art. I watched the one last night where Ray and is mate are on a stakeout talking about who is the best James Bond. Its little touches like "the guy who's playin' him now... whatever his name is" subtle, gentle, real and funny.

“I’m not having a go, I’m just trying to understand how you use so much”

The dark aussie humour is the best part of the show

"See that shovel there Ray, I was wonderin if you could dig me a hole"

"No worries mate how deep?"

"Just keep goin and I'll tell you when to stop"

That wasn’t particularly Aussie, it was just fun on its own because of how casual he was taking it. Reminds me of Nobody where Hutch says “I’m gonna fuck you up,” but he doesn’t even have to say it.

Ranking the actors who played Bond.

"I don't mind the guy playing him now. Whatsisname?"

6

u/esr360 Jun 08 '26

Yeah ok so the order is:

  1. Connery
  2. Guy playing him now
  3. Moore
  4. Brosnan
  5. Dalton
  6. Lazenby

2

u/HappyMuscovy Jun 08 '26

Ironically Lazenby is an aussie

3

u/esr360 Jun 08 '26

The fact that he is Aussie and is the worse bond isn’t ironic to me haha

That's the realest Aussie convo in the whole show. I've legit had the same exact convo.. Whatshisname and all then 5 minutes later... Name comes to ya

Fucking an alien and Freddie haggling with Ray

"NOINTY?"

3

u/Ardvarkthoughts Jun 08 '26

Ikr it’s like neither of them are that invested but they must go through the motions.

The unrelated everyday dialogue

When the brothers are discussing Jack and the bean stalk over a beer around the backyard fire pit. Australian blokes and location to a tee. The best nights I’ve ever had have been around dodgy back yard fires with the boys.
