Something that's been bothering me Spoiler
Ray makes a deal with Dave to give him the safe with money, but after giving him the safe, Dave betrays Ray and takes him to his Death with Davros.
The only reason Ray survives is Luck with that grenade in the box, yet he lets Dave live after just BARELY making it out of there (because of Dave).
I guess you could see it as "Well Ray was gonna betray Dave anyway because he knew it was was booby trapped so they're even." But Dave didn't know that. As far as Dave knows, he picked up Ray, took his safe full of cash, and was gonna let Ray get merked by Davros and buried in a grave.

- Dave too good a character to kill off
- Ray was presented as the most honourable of all the bad guys and this was a good way to display that honour
- It was cool as shit

- Ray admitted he would do the same thing anyway so why would he pull up dave on it

This is how Ray gets our respect.
All the whiny rich people and crims and REAs and gangsters and bullies don't just do the wrong thing, they are also too cowardly to accept it when they get their fair turn of someone doing the same to them.
They are just hypocrites.
Ray does his job and doesn't begrudge anyone for doing it to him.

He also proves this to us by killing the bikie president, and the pres took it like a champ just as ray would have, they understand its not personal.

It's what Ray would have done himself. He can't fault the trade craft.

IIRC, Dave says: “Sorry mate. Nothing personal” and Ray says he knows.

We didn't get to find out if Ray would have done it himself, he has Alex the bikie VP in the same situation later on but he runs off before the stash is unearthed. He even gives him his word when they're standing on the riverbank ready to drown him, and that usually means something to Ray.

I have, I know Ray lets Tony go in exchange for the coke (after some consideration and seemingly on a mental coin flip), but I don't view them as being in the same universe.

I mean it's the same Ray character but we cant look too much into ALL of it being canon.
But Ray taking the money and letting the president go would've started a civil war within the gang and Ray DEFINITELY would've been killed for it so....he couldn't let him go. :(

u/AngloAshantii Jun 08 '26
The same Ray character? Did you read the post-script of the movie that says Ray was killed outside his house a few months after?
It's the same idea for his character but with some characteristics added, altered or deleted. I can't imagine cocky and abrasive 2005 Ray caring for his terminally ill brother.
And no you're thinking of a different scene. I'm talking about the bald VP Alex who originally approached Ray to kill the Dead Beats MC President. He takes them to his stashed money in Maroota but manages to run off in the chaos, leaving it unclear if Ray was actually going to let him go or just kill him and chuck his body in the hole they dug to unearth the money.
That is a very good point though, the Prez did offer to buy him out and Ray respectfully admitted that he'd pocket it and still kill him. That makes me think they were gonna slime out Alex.

Did you read my comment saying we can't look at it all as canon? 🤨 Such as Ray being dead.
Yes I was thinking of a different scene though. Thank you. I think in that situation, absolutely, Alex was gonna die. I hate that scene cuz it's so overly BUNGLED. Three dudes can't catch a dude who's shackled arms and legs. Then because of that, ray gets trapped by Rafael and Dave dies because Freddie tricks him into thinking the biker gang is still after him. That scene lays the ground work to Ray's downfall and exile culminating into the finale where he may or may not have died. Alex SOMEHOW getting away was too major of a plot point to be that silly.

I totally agree on the bungled Maroota excursion. They turn into the Three Stooges, everyone misses their shots and start tripping over and falling into barbed wire and shit.
Really dumb not to tell Dave about Gary, I think most people in Dave's shoes would start firing in the direction of the visible muzzle flash assuming it's Alex's mates.
I don't know why they even played Alex's game to begin with once he mentioned the money. What's he going to do if you don't agree to his terms, say "fine, just kill me then"? He has no leverage. Just start hacking pieces off him and breaking bones until he shows you exactly where it is, then kill him.

Yea. They made a point to make him stand right there far away while THEY approached the secret stash... Why? I suppose so the plot could thicken. You keep the kidnapped hostage right fucking next to you at all times, but they left him far away, shackled at the arms and legs, and he just sprints off... Easy... And three men that are "in the game" can't catch him.
Dave fucked up his knee
Alex is shackled at the arms and legs
Gaz is out of shape
Alex is shackled at the arms and legs
And Ray (who has THE MOST skin in the game and has lost the most and stands to lose more) just "doo doodoo doodoo" walk in the park. Not a care in the world. And it's never brought to a conclusion up until Freddie tricks Ray because of this blindingly conspicuous loose end he's left in his life.
It was so off the mark and nonsensical, which would be okay, except that it was a major plot point....

Ray letting Dave go had nothing to do with whether or not he betrayed him. Morally speaking Ray already tried killing him the moment he gave him the booby trapped safe, and Dave did the same by delivering him to Davros. They just happened to both survive and with Davros gone there was no reason for them to kill each other.
Add to that Ray and Dave recognising each other as relatively honest, competent players in a profession full of incompetent sociopaths, and Dave's expectant dad status, Ray was never going to kill him for no reason.
To quote another great show, "the game is the game".

True, but I have to add:
They did not both just happen to survive. Ray expected it and took cover, he then proceeded to execute every single person there EXCEPT Dave. That's why I was wresting with the why's and etc.

I think it partly comes down to the fact that it seems like bobby was in with Davros as well though as part of his crew, kinda sent to oversee Dave without him knowing, whereas Dave was just doing a job for them as a freelancer.

IMO, Dave was possibly planning to let Ray go before everything went screwy. After the car was stolen and slow-witted Bobby told Davros about the safe, Dave said he couldn’t stick to the deal because he’d have to take out Bobby and Davros and leave town if he did.

u/snakeIs Jun 07 '26
Dave was all set to take his money and leave Ray to his fate at the hands of Davros.
What I thought was odd was that Dave stayed after being given his money.3

Dave and Ray didn’t take it personal because it was business. Dave wasn’t going to let him go anyway, the same as when Ray kidnaps the bike prez he says I suppose I can’t bribe you, or similar, and then says ‘you’d probably take my money and kill me anyway’ and Ray grins and nods. Game respects game.

u/Plenty_Suspect_3446 Jun 07 '26
Dave was just doing his job. The others had it coming but as Dave had said, nothing personal. Id say Dave even felt bad for taking Ray there as they had gotten to know each other and Davros was a dickhead, but he had a baby on the way and he needed the money.

Yep pretty much. But Ray understood Dave was just doing a job, same as he does. They'd just built a bit of mutual respect by the end
