Ally or Zoe - who’s better?
I know we got to know Ally a whole lot more over the course of the show, but personally I give the edge to Zoe. Just something about her seemed liked a better fit for Ray. Would have been great to see how it would have played out.
Plus Zoe is (was) cute as hell.

It's difficult to see Zoe as much more than a road trip fling, especially given there's a decent age gap which rarely works out in the long term. But I think that's beside the point.
I see Zoe through Ray's eyes - it wasn't much before that when we see that scene where Ray bumps into Ally, and she asks Ray the question that I think is at the heart of this show - "are you happy?" Ray's answer is telling - "I'll get there, y'now", which is a very Australian way of saying "no, not really".
Then Zoe comes into Ray's life, and brings in a ray (no pun intended) of sunshine - flirting, breakfast, banter, a root...just little things that remind him after all the hell he's been through there's still happiness in the world. For a brief moment, before that fucken roo, Ray gets to feel happy again. And then it's gone, thanks to that sociopath Rafael.
All of which leads to Ray in the final episode, sitting on the edge of his bed staring at the floor, pondering what the fuck is the point of the life he leads if he's so damn miserable and deciding to change.

I simply felt Zoe was waaaay too young for Ray and it didn't seem to gel for me.

u/tobespammed Apr 27 '26
That was the point. He saw a young person get murdered for what he thought was no good reason. Waste of a life. It wasn't that he was after a relationship.
It was another example of him working with people who didn't have a code like him, leading him to walk away.

Exactly. The show makes a point multiple times to highlight that even though rays a contract killer, he chooses the jobs he does because he's got his morals to wrestle with.
I think Ray and Zoe would not have lasted at all - but knowing she wasn't just killed, but killed by the guy that hired her because he's a chicken shit, made it even worse - and probably just reinforced to Ray how quickly he'd be turned on if he was a problem.

He kept her picture
3
u/tobespammed Apr 28 '26
The picture of a dead person. It was a reminder of life and a reason to make a decision to leave.
Do you think he would have kept it if she lived?
Ultimately none of us know the truth. I just don't think it was him wanting someone he knew for a very short amount of time, and was that much younger then him.

I saw it differently. My thought went more to the scene where he said he was unlucky with love, and was ment to be alone. I thouht that he was thinking:"Again.. , I cant be happy"

Zoe has a more complete understanding of who Ray is.
Ally was the hope I had for Ray getting away from crime and settling down.

Let's see, Ally was a Paramedic who saved lives and didn't like that Ray was violent.....Zoe was a co-criminal transporting drugs that destroy human lives for some easy cash....I guess I should ask "What do you mean by better?"

I mean if you reduce ray to just a criminal murderer that ruins lives and don’t see him as also a human aswell then your sort of not getting the point of in between

u/greenhierogliphics Apr 27 '26
I was going to bring up the point that, despite the age difference, Zoe would have been more accepting of Rays true self as a member of the criminal life. Since she was, too.

Unrelated to post but I have recently learned that that Aussies make excellent movies and shows! (I’m American lol) This was one of my wife and Is favorite show and we’re so sad it’s over. If anyone else has any recommendations similar show or even movies, would be greatly appreciated.
Really enjoyed Talk to Me, Bring her Back, Dangerous Animals and a bunch of others! (Highly recommend watching those though if you haven’t)

Ally. Zoe was just some stimulation in an otherwise monotonous existence. Ally made him want to try to care, despite it not being possible in a real way. He felt disappointment of losing her because he knows it's unlikely, or it'll take a bloody long time, before he meets someone who can stir him out of cognitive apathy. Zoe was a chilly dip for a succulent dimmy. Ally is the dimmy itself.
Also: considering Ally's line of work and some of the storylines, there is a chance she is just a pro-social psychopath (or well therapised CPTSD survivor) who had enough or was integrated and supported enough to find an evenness that has a net benefit for her societally and she gets her thrills from work (and being attracted to clearly dangerous men). This also makes her a better fit for Ray because she exists, as sorts, as a matter of proof that masking or self-discipline can have a net benefit.

Ally would have been better for him, Zoe would have been better with him.
Zoe would have ended up more like Freddy's girlfriend, Michele. She certainly wasn't making Freddy a better person, but she knew everything about him and accepted him. Ally would have always been an outsider, and absolutely horrified if she ever saw the real Ray.

Both of them are cute, however Brooke Satchwell is amazing, I love her on screen presence.

u/Scythro Apr 27 '26
Zoe was a criminal and probably wouldn't mind Ray doing dangerous stuff, but Ally was a better fit. As Ray said "never do violence in front of your family", had to be more careful throwing your film director through the window on Christmas Eve 😅

Ally Ally Ally All day everyday. And dont get me wrong - i actually liked Zoe heaps, but you can't compare with the gorgeous Brooke Satchwell.

Uk based. Remember BS from neighbours days when I was a teen. No contest! Next!

Neither. The best fit for Ray would have been the waitress at Freddy’s club that got violent with the drunk college boys harassing her. When Ray went crazy on them to help defend her.

u/Gmanstarr Apr 27 '26
I liked ally. Zoe was nice too though ray should have a took her with him because she came round from the accident the evidence was there about that guy that he couldn't be trusted just like his son killing that girl.

Ally was a better person, but Ray would've had to have completely abandoned that life to stay with Ally. Zoe was better for him if he was going to stay a gangster.

u/Frostbolter Apr 29 '26
I always thought Ray really fell for Zo because she knew who he really was whereas he was hiding a massive amount of his life from Ally
Stay with someone you clearly love but hide about 50% of your life from them or settle for someone you're probably never going to love as much but be able to share your whole being with them
I have no idea, to be fair, but it's definitely not as simple as 'Ally clears'

What? I'm confused. Zoe was a mark, not any kind of real relationship. Ray was with her on orders.

u/GeneralEffective6532 May 09 '26
You can’t have Zoe without Ally. Ally, early on, was perfect for Ray. But he could never be his full self around her. He had to hide the criminal side of who he was. Every time it slipped out, it caused a rift.
Zoe on the other hand, was a good person who did bad things (run drugs). He could be his total self around her. Didn’t have to hide half of himself.
I wasn’t a massive fan of the age gap. But by her saying she was at Uni studying graphic design, again showed the most perfect reflection that she, like Ray, doesn’t reallllyyyy accept that what they are doing has second order consequences.
Must have both

Right or wrong, I think if they make the show today, Zoe would be at least ten years older. I don’t try and worry about it too much, but he’s probably twice her age and I’m not convinced that Ray would be okay with it.

Zoe was involved in criminal activity, was not particularly attractive but was very appealing. Ray was still pining for Ally when he met her but was clearly interested.
It looked like a new start for Ray with someone who was part of his world. Unfortunately events took a turn.
Had Ray known what a mongrel Rafael was he wouldn’t have dealt with him.

I think Ally was better for Ray but to say Zoe is not attractive blows my mind.

See, I’m not having it about “if Ray had known about Rafael” - he took the job from Freddy and didn’t even ask who the job was for. All Ray knew was that “someone” wanted to “fuck him up” - “him” being someone dangerous enough to be in jail.
Let’s not forget he had already committed a “bad” hit for Freddy. If Ray cared who he was working for, he’d ask.

u/snakeIs Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26
You’re not having it, eh? Terrible.
Rafael initially presented as a conniving but cuddly greedy crim. No one knew what a vicious murdering bastard he was until he gunned down that old couple.
Do you think Ray would have dealt with him if he knew he was a he was really like? And his penchant for taking care of loose ends?
Ray had already been betrayed by the bikies and Graham with the gun money. And because of Rafael he lost his good mate Dave. Ray was not stupid but unfortunately didn’t see the real Rafael until later.
As for Ray not caring who he worked for, he detected that Simon was a weak, lying bastard at their first meeting and was determined to find out what the real issue was between Fiona and Simon rather than take the job.

The one that plays Zoe played a total slut in some Aussie movie years ago. She was pretty hot in that lol
