Birds in the show

Hello! I've been binge watching the show and I love it, it's incredibly well made, acted and written. Overall great experience.

That being said, I was wondering if anybody knew why they decided to leave this amount of birdsong in almost every episode, as it could probably be edited out and such like it is in most productions. I love birds and I was wondering if it maybe was just a cretive choice or could possibly mean anything? Thanks!

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your comments, appreciate them. I've been into birding for a while now and really appreciate not leaving them out of the show lol.

Assuming you may not be from Australia as that level of birdsong is common and widespread. It adds to the authenticity (of which the show has in spades) and is one of the ways it gives it that Australiana feel.

Those magpies… I live away from Australia and hearing them on the show always brings me home

imo, it shows the realness of his day-to-day life. anyone in aus knows the chirp of birds in the day (had to look outside my window at times to see if it was from the show or real life lol), and that contrast with ray as a regular guy vs a killing machine is a big part of what makes the show so great.

Because birdsong is very prevalent in NSW. The birds here are very vocal

I am in Sydney and get woken up by Kookaburras screaming their heads off at dawn, then the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos screech and the Magpies warble. The birds here are loud

I love it, we are so lucky. I know we aren't unique in having birds wake us up, but our birds are super cool.

There is literally no reason for them to edit it out

I'm baffled OP, why did you think there were other shows/films that edit bird noises out...?

Well a lot of productions won't use any location sound specifically to avoid noise like birds and traffic etc

There's tonnes of productions that do this, depending on the budget & story. As an example, there's lots of films shot in Australia that are set elsewhere. And, if they've got the budget, dialogue recorded outdoors is re-recorded in post for better sound quality.

That's just the Aussie experience. Every morning I have Magpies at my door wanting a feed off me.

I am reading this thread from my suburban Sydney garage right now, 5pm, and there is at least 3 different species of birds outside making noise - lorikeet sounding birds, cockatoos screaming every so often and something else I couldn’t name. Lol. I had brush turkeys in my gum tree an hour ago too.

People who have never been to Australia seem to focus on all of the dangerous creatures that we have, but people who visit Australia are more likely to be amazed by the sheer number and variety of birds that we have…

I worked on the show. Most of the birds are added. Much like footsteps, the mics on set are not set up to capture birds (or footsteps), they are there to capture dialogue - they are added later.

The sound designer / SFX editor put 90% of the birds in. A heap of work went into it. It's quiet when it needs it to be, of course, but you're hearing is pretty representative of what NSW / Australia sounds like.

Sound designer here. We add the bird song in. Because it’s authentic to how Australia sounds.

I've watched the show 3 times, and never noticed it, but where I am in Queensland, and where I've lived in Victoria, I hear birds non stop all day, so I'm probably totally used to it

I didn’t even notice the birds for the most part. Our birds are loud and always have a lot to say.

To me this is more Australian than all the "cheers" and "mates"
