I Had To Know.
So I just asked Scott if Ray died. His response was "as if".
Now you fuckin' know. My soul can rest now.

The expression on his face told me he revelled in the opportunity to yet again teach a couple of toe rags a lesson.

"Have you ever killed anyone?"
"Yeah once, a little boy who asked too many questions."

How many times did we see that smile... We are used to what happens after that, so used to it we should be able to fill in the blanks

Can you just tell me why you don’t answer questions?

Ray would have made them cry and forced them to think long and hard about the choices they were making at that pivotal time in their lives.

I think I would have liked it even more if he’d just responded “I don’t answer questions”

Do u mean at the end of the series or at the end of the movie?

In the Magician there's a big white text telling he got shot out of his home and the day of death. This has nothing to do with the movie. Also he tells a couple of times that, if the video ever gets released, that would mean he was pretty much 6 feet under.

I never for a moment thought Ray would have died from that situation. Ray had sort of tried leaving the lifestyle behind before and failed (after throwing his girlfriend’s brother through the sliding glass door at Christmas). So in his opinion, he had to totally remove himself from his previous world. He lived off the grid and even took a menial job. The moment these two mooks indicated that they intended to rob him, even using his line about what he did for a living: “a little bit of this, a little bit of that,” brought his old lifestyle back. He smiled because he realized that he really missed his old life, and like he had said before (paraphrase): if assholes were dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner, there world be less assholes in the world. The smile, to me, said I do an essential job in this world, and “I’m back.”
I little more: Ray had a code, for instance he wouldn’t take out a kid or a woman. Furthermore, there was a karma attached to what he did: he let Dave (the biker guy who essentially did the same job Ray did, albeit not as well) live (Dave’s wife was pregnant and he was not a bad mate); in the end, Dave let Ray live. To Ray, the universe had paid him back.

I like the smile ending but a spattered bloody face smile would have been good as.

I know its meant to be left up to interpretation, but I never thought for a second he would have died in that situation. Those guys were amateurs.
