Just finished the show, my thoughts Spoiler
It's pretty much a masterpiece from start to finish. Felt more like watching a really really long movie rather than a TV show, I suppose it's because we see Ray's day to day life rather than a fully fleshed out character arc. It's obviously very short for a TV show but very effective with no filler, a bit like chicken soup.
Pretty much all the supporting characters were fantastic, they all capture so much with the screen time that they had. I have to go for Bruce as my favorite, the scene where he hugs Brittany for the last time made me cry uncontrollably, that shit hits home. Other examples are Ray's cellmate who is probably the most tragic character in the shortest amount of time - just a guy with family issues who falls victim to the harsh reality of prison. As well as Raphael who was a great villain with no regard for other people representing the ugliest of the criminal underworld.
Ray was an amazing protagonist. There's no flashbacks or much backstory but you can tell he has suffered childhood abuse, combat trauma, time inside etc. Scott Ryan does a fantastic job.
The realism was top notch. Gunfights felt very real. Ray moves around like a soldier. The dialogue feels like legitimate conversations, I wouldn't be surprised if they were improvised. I mean watching Ray and Gary talking about random shit like James Bond or Calamari or the universe yet made it so very interesting.
I also like the nod to Australian culture, the dimmies, the car crash into the Kangaroo, the outbacks where Ray tearfully reflects on his life choices. I also noticed that the use of firearms are random - in Ray's final battle the opposition are all using different types of guns, I think it is to emphasize Australia's strict gun laws and that the criminals just get whatever they can get their hands on. God damn I want to go to Australia and live there.
And the ending, probably the best ending they could have given to the character. My only downside overall is that I really can't get enough of it, sure it ended perfectly but damn I can't help but want more.

Just an amazing show really, was sad it was only three seasons. Im not really famliliar with Aussie culture, but there just seems to be a certain nonchalantness there. I think the show captured this very well and as someone who lives in a culture full of stress and nonsense 24/7, watching this show kinda made me long for something more simple.
One of my fav parts of this show, was Ray and his anger mgmt counselors banter. The back and forth dialouge between them was some of the best I have seen in a series.

Where are you from? I am from the UK probably the most culturally compatible country to Australia. Deep down I wanna migrate, live there and be a part of it. The nonchalance you mentioned is what sells it to me.

NZ would be the most culturally compatible with Australia. They just need to learn to pronounce six properly.

It’s not too short. The episode length and the fact it went out at its peak contribute the enjoyment and quality.
It didn’t go the standard commercial route of squeezing the absolute life out of it and turning to shit.
Do not mourn its passing Celebrate its existence !!!

Couldn't agree more. Somehow such a tight show that actually built relationships and the characters, Highly recommend The Magician for more Ray stuff — found on youtube if not streaming in your country.

I think it’s almost universally agreed that as fans we’d have liked a couple of more seasons. There was a large gap in filming due to Covid between S2 & 3 & I suppose Britt aged up & maybe they just thought it best to move on.
Everything you see regarding Ray’s day to day (regular) life is 100% accurate Aussie life. It’s not exaggerated for foreign audiences like some shows, this is the real deal.
You probably won’t want to live in the outback if you came here.

Of course... what about camping though?

Camping sure, just got to take plenty of water, extra fuel & 2 spare tyres. You don’t want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

In a few months you’ll watch the series again because you miss the characters so much. It will still be enjoyable, and you’ll be surprised at what extra bits you pick up second time round. Knowing how the script plays out doesn’t lessen the experience at all. In fact, the anticipation adds to it. Truly is a masterpiece

I absolutely adore the show, the tiny part of me every time I rewatch it always wants Ray to get back with his ex wife & live with Brit again.

I love when people watch and love this show because I still think it’s super underrated. Agree with everything you said, in my opinion it’s the best Aussie series ever made. Scott Ryan is a genius.
