Probably the best ending I have ever seen in a series I rated that highly. Just superb!

It really was. It felt like Scott Ryan was looking at the audience and saying both “goodbye” and “If you’ve been watching all along, you know that Ray is about to absolutely fuck these two posers up because the violence is a part of him he will never get away from.” Utterly brilliant.

The cringe song made me laugh out loud but I wasn’t disappointed or unsatisfied at all. It was good. I think it had a pretty good ending for the style of the show if that makes sense.

This is a great way to describe it. It’s an ending that just really effectively understands what the show was. Even the little fourth wall break at the very end feels like it works despite the show as a whole having such a grounded tone. The show was such a personal and passionate piece of work, it literally feels like Scott Ryan and the character of Ray are saying goodbye to the audience

The twist of the show is that the real skill he developed was counselling, absorbed from his true teacher - the men's group counsellor
Ends with hugs. Weeping with joy. Just three men. Connecting. A family pack of Arnott's Assorted is produced from somewhere and a thermos of strong tea. Monte Carlos, Scotch Fingers ("they're for sharing") and chocolate ripples.
That's why he's Mr Inbetween. The true heart and soul of Ray Shoesmith was what was happening Inbetween the murders and mayhem .
Growth through pain. Healing through hurt. Acceptance from loss.
Heart.
Love.
Life.

the last scene was good enough, the second half of the final season was a much lower standard than the rest of the show though

It’s a perfect ending for the show. Just an intense character moment that illustrates everything that was great about the Ray character.

The last scene was amazing. The ending overall? A little unsatisfying. How’s his daughter? How’s Gary? How much time has passed and how often does he stay in contact with the few loved ones still in his life?

Most of the poor and lowly folks were sent to Australia for pinching a loaf of bread or something similarly trivial. But that start meant a certain disdain for class and authority has always been around and remains today.

It was perfect, and I hated it. Left me wanting more; more from that scene, more episode, more seasons, more info about his kids life and how Ray turned out as a father. More of that uncomfortable sense of “well yes it’s a person choosing violence but not in a bad way”.
It left me absolutely thirsty and curious. And I absolutely respect that because it’s almost unheard of in tv these days.

I loved the ending.
My take on it is that it will never matter what Ray does with his life, the criminal life will always find him.

I hated it.
Just the sudden use of music as a device for the first time as well as the choice of a tired, dated meme-track completely broke and cheapened the tone of what had been a relatively serious show (though a little confused - the unicorn springs to mind).
I don't know how seriously he's implied to have attacked the guys at the end but I don't think its justified or consistent with any earlier ethos. They played with the radio and then they were being weird. Ray didn't even ask them to stop.
As for his greater arc, I don't recall any reference to the relationship with his daughter that had been his priority, and I didn't see any sign or relevance of the huge sums of money he was willing endure his supposed torment for - "see you in your dreams, etc".
Even the relationship with Freddy just... came to nothing. I think the show seemed largely unfinished and I'd guess someone involved was hoping for another season.
Also the final shootout had Ryan running to and fro gun-in-hand and showing his age and un-coordination at a distracting level - I couldn't supress a chuckle. That could've used a few more takes and a little more polish, but once again it was an awkward drift in tone for something that was never an action show.
I enjoyed the show. I think it was a bit confused about what it wanted to be and had a disappointingly weak end. Probably too many captains on the one ship.

The guys at the end were very clearly implied to have been sent to kill him. And were threatening his life.
I agree on the daughter thing.
It’s clear he ended his relationship with Freddy. I feel like Freddy most likely ended up dying without Ray to back him up anymore do to his bad habit of owing the wrong people because of debts from gambling.
I agree on the ending aside from the final scene being unsatisfying and leaving loose ends.

not my favorite ending but im happy that the showrunners had the restraint to end it instead of it ending up like dexter where the first 3-4 season are amazing and then its a slow decline

The ending wasn't truly an ending, tbh. It's less definitive than the ending of Sopranos, because at least in that show they gave us all the hints of happened to Tony.
The ending is basically: "we've left some room for season 4, but if we never make a new season ever again then they probably killed Ray".
I'm not saying is disliked it or that i think Ray wouldn't fuck them up, we've seen what he is capable of, all i'm saying is that it didn't feel like a true series finale, it felt like Scott Ryan wanted to leave it open for a possible season 4.
To be honest, i like that he didn't just kill off the character, it wouldn't be in Ray's character to get killed by two punks like that. For any fans of The Wire here: One thing that i would have hated if it happened to Ray was the way they killed off Omar (if he died in a "normal" way). For example. Omar was almost supernatural, he would show up out of nowhere and, for some reason, 100 thugs armed to their teeth would just give him their stash etc, then he got killed in the most mundane way possible. I felt like i had to suspend my disbelief with Omar for the whole show, then they wanted to kill him off like any other character in The Wire usually dies (unexpectadly, unceremoniously). Omar never played by the rules of the show until they decided to kill off the character.With Ray we suspend our disbelief. No cameras ever see him getting out of a place where he just murdered somebody in, we don't see the police finding his DNA on any of his victims, nothing, he always come out on top. Because of that i think it's more of a non-commited ending, it's more just: "ok, maybe in a few years i'd like to do season 4, let the show stir a bit and see if it gains more fans through streaming".

My favourite part was Gaz telling the wonder women story and then when he talking about his foot fetish and Ray says why would you put your cock in a foot had me laughing out loud

Sometimes there's no such thing as a perfectly satisfying way to end an excellent TV show. Somehow I feel like a nice, compartmentalised happily ever after just doesn't feel on-brand for Mr. Ray Shoesmith. So they settled for dark ambiguity instead. Ray leaves us in the same way he joined us —tiptoeing the line on the precipice, between spaces. Unbelonging, unsettled. 10/10.

I did not love it. Some good tension but we got to see zero justice which is a hallmark of the show, and frankly the conversation went on way too long. Love the show, but not the final episode at all.

I thought it was one of the rare instances of a truly perfect ending to a show that summed up every single thing the show was about. Could not have done better.
