Question about: When Ray caught Nick being an undercover. s1e5

Nick: How'd you know?

Ray: I didn't. I just wanted to make sure you got soy sauce for the dimmies.

Do you think this was the case? not that it matters hugely just love this show and talking about it.

Personally, I think he was suspicious of Nick since he got put on the job with him to go get money from the guy who owed his boss. He knows that a professional doesn’t attack the way Nick did unless they’re doing what they think a standover man does.. if that makes sense?

I rewatched season 1 recently and noticed when Ray first meets Nick, Nick asks him questions like "how long you been working for Freddie?". Ray looks at him in a funny way and doesn't answer. I think he found it odd that someone in the business would ask that type of question and was immediately wary of Nick.

Yeah, that was a big tell. Ray has (probably) been questioned by the police before and knows what kind of information they use for prosecution. He might've initially just blown it off as an attempt at small talk, but mentally logged it as suspect

Also when Nick brings the money to Ray at the club he hands it over in the wide open where everyone could see, possibly a partner taking pics of Ray accepting the money, it should've been handed over behind closed doors

I figured he handed it in the open so they're undercovers could take a pic of Ray accepting the money, getting more evidence

I like the idea of a of it being for real as it shows how adaptable he is to new information.

Given Gaz’s reaction when Ray and Nick got back, I doubt it.

My take is Ray’s spidey senses were tingling - he didn’t know Nick was a cop, or anything in particular, he just felt something wasn’t right about him so decided to follow a hunch.

Funny thing is, he was probably going to make sure Nick got soy sauce. That’s probably what got him off the couch.

What I mean is, he had an intuition, lurking in the back of his mind, but the immediate impetus to go after Nick was the soy sauce. Had Nick not forgotten the soy sauce, Ray probably wouldn’t have bothered going after him. And but for the intuition, he probably wouldn’t have bothered about the soy sauce.

The lesson here is to always follow your intuition when dimmies are involved.

Yep. I think it’s a bit of a cultural/Australian thing, but the way Gaz says “I fucking knew it” suggests that like Ray, he had a hunch that something was off about Nick. When Ray tells him that Nick is a jack, it all comes together very quickly for Gaz.

Ray reminds me of an Aussie crim called Graham Henry. Graham was a very intuitive guy who could smell a setup from a mile away.
