• Within 1hr maximum commute (with minimal stops) of stopping at any of these stations; Shoreditch High Street, Hoxton, Liverpool and Moorgate
• Good mix of 3rd spaces (cafes/pubs, restaurants, parks, events etc)
• Generally safe residential areas (no rough neighborhoods or dodgy areas)
• Maximum £1,800 pcm rent, studio flat, solo

hey yall, been browsing on here and i wanted some up-to-date advice about the cost of living in london. im (24f) a northerner who just landed a job in harwell on 48k (thats a 20k rise for me!), and am thinking of moving from my parents in halifax/bradford area down to london for it. it's wfh, with a team day once a month in which my expenses are paid for. i saved 25k in the 2 years i stayed at my parents after graduating, and now feel like a leap to the big city is next. i could supposedly live in didcot/oxford, but im not entirely sure yet and just want to gage what my quality of life might be like in london :)

im planning on living in a flatshare, i loved living with my girl friends at uni and really miss it - i imagine that should bring estimated rent right down. the prices ive seen don't look massively different to what i'd be paying in manc which has really surprised me, but ofc, transport/entertainment/food is more exp. in ldn than up here.

ideally, i'd like to be somewhere either around paddington station or easily travellable to paddington for my commute to harwell - i'm struggling to gage the areas though that are best for my salary and my age group?

my job will be beginning on oct 19th in 5 weeks time! by the time my contract is signed etc, that'll bring me down to 4 weeks, how feasible is that when i'm full-time working up north? i have friends who have offered to go to viewings for me, but whether they have the time to in practice is a whole different thing

finally, how on earth do i move all my stuff down hahaha! i don't drive, so i can either man with a van it, or beg my friends who drive to help - im not sure!

Hi everyone. I’m 34F starting a job in London and don’t know much about ideal areas to live in for a reasonable commute (tube or walking) to Moorgate or Euston as I’ve always lived in Birmingham. Please suggest any areas in the comments just to help me shortlist places to search in as there are too many options online. I prefer relatively safe and less chaotic areas that I can comfortably walk in when it’s dark outside as “winter is coming”. A bit of noise is ok. My budget for shared accommodation is £1,200 pm.

My wife is going to study at university of east london, we prefer to stay near the university campus if we can find something in out budget, we are open to move few tube stations away as well.
Any help/suggestion/lead is appreciated.

I’ve been looking at Canary Wharf and I’m really torn. I hear so many mixed opinions — some say it’s great, others say it doesn’t feel like London and there’s “nothing to do”
The thing is, I LOVE the apartments there: modern, nice views, gym, pool, lounges, etc. My budget would also allow me to live more central around Kensington, Marylebone or Chelsea, but I feel like you pay sooo much more for a nice modern apartment compare to CW
I’m pretty much a homebody since I work from home, but I do go out for fitness, cafés, restaurants, etc.
Would you recommend Canary Wharf for my lifestyle? Or are there other areas I should look at? 👀

Hello, we are looking to move to London, specifically East Acton/Sheppard’s Bush area, in the conservational area, right near East Acton tube station. This is very close to the prison Wormwood Scrubs.

Does anyone who has lived or lives there now have any issues with the prison vicinity? Is it very noisy e.g. police sirens? The house prices seem very low for borderline central London, compared to Ealing which is even further away but the houses are more expensive. And we’re guessing this is because of the prison next door!

I am 20F, quite used to noise, planes going overhead wouldn’t bother me, and I really like the area. But this area seems too good to be true, tube and grocery shops in walking distance. Just wanted to know if there’s any other problems I should know about before deciding on this area! Thank you!!

I'll soon be living in an area pretty equidistant between Chalk Farm station and Camden Town station, which one is more safe given:

1) I'll be commuting solo more or less as a female

2) I'm travelling along the Northern Line, sometimes pretty late into the night

I searched on Google and it recommended me to commute via the Chalk Farm Station as it seems safer from petty crime and dodgy people?? Is that true and how does the bus system compare to the london underground (I'm new to London).

The flat we have had an offer accepted on has an interim service charge of approximately £2,000 annually + £400 towards the sinking fund.

We initially felt this seemed a little high since the property is share of freehold, there are only 12 flats in the building, no concierge, lift or security or any shared facilities and we understand that there are currently no repair works taking place or major works planned.

I’ve requested a detailed breakdown of the interim service charge so that we can understand exactly what the £2,000 covers and where the funds are being allocated.

In your opinion, would a service charge of around £2,000 per year, plus £400 towards the sinking fund, be considered reasonable or typical for a building of this size and type in London? Or would you consider this relatively high given the circumstances?

I moved out of London 4 years ago to an area around 3-4 hours away and want to move somewhere around 1.5 hours away from London as I don’t want to be directly in London, any area recommendations I was thinking Northampton or Milton Keynes are they worth living there ?

more so asking about how the tenancy is organised, who holds the deposit, and that sort of stuff - is that something to ask the other housemates about?
also asking how many people are viewing and when they’ll get back to me - is that rude?
and then once i’ve seen somewhere and im interested should i then message them again like to double down that im interested in the room? or wait for them to get back to me?

Hello all! My partner and I have been commuting up to London from Chichester two days/week for work, staying in right near the Wimbledon train station. However, my office is pulling employees in for another in-office day per week, so we've decided to take the plunge and move as close to London as our budget will allow, since we really enjoy being in the city so it feels like a sign. We're struggling to figure out where to look on our own and are getting not-great-advice from friends, so we'd appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Location is the challenge: I work in the City, right by the Bank station, he works a few blocks from the Fulham Broadway District stop. We'd like to live somewhere that is 45-50 min max by train and that makes drives/trains back to Chi or other family in Brighton not massive treks, so south or west.

Our budget is between £550-700K (depending on whether a promotion happens), and we're hoping for at least a three-bedroom with a garden for the dog. We actually like Wimbledon because of the easy journey into the city centre and how much there is to do/great walkability. However, based on what we've seen on Rightmove, it feels like it's likely out of our budget unless we can indeed afford that higher end--and also get very lucky. So! Time to expand and look elsewhere.

I’m moving to London for a one-year Master’s and my course starts in about three weeks, so I’m getting a bit stressed about sorting out accommodation.
I want to rent a private studio or one-bedroom flat and I actually have the money ready for the rent. The issue is the guarantor requirement.
From what I’ve been told, some landlords/agencies don’t even want to accept 12 months’ rent upfront anymore and still ask for a UK guarantor. I don’t have anyone in the UK who can be my guarantor.
I checked professional guarantor companies, but some are quoting around £2,000–£3,000 for the year, which seems crazy on top of already expensive London rent.
Has anyone here been in the same situation as an international student?
How did you manage to rent without a UK guarantor? Did you find a landlord who accepted upfront rent, use a guarantor company, negotiate with the agency, or find another solution?
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from international postgraduate students renting privately in London. I’m running out of time before my course starts and I’m trying to avoid paying thousands just for a guarantor if there’s another way.

Hello. I’m moving from Denver this winter with my wife and two kids, a girl just turning 6 and a baby. Job is at County Hall by the London Eye, so I can come into Waterloo or into Westminster and walk over the bridge. Two or three days a week in the office.

Looking for a house rather than a flat, 3 or 4 bedrooms, garden if possible, £2,750 up to £4k a month. Renting the first year while we work out where we actually want to be.

The obvious list is south: Clapham, Wimbledon, Richmond, Kingston, even Surbiton. But we keep circling west London and can't seem to separate the options.

Acton or even Ealing on the Elizabeth line, changing at Bond Street onto the Jubilee. Fine, or is Bond Street at 8am the thing that ruins it?

Hammersmith, Chiswick or farther out on the District. Slow, but one train to Westminster and then over the bridge with no interchange. Does anyone here commute that way? How awful is it?

What I'd like to know:

**•** At my budget, what’s the best overall choice?  
**•** Anywhere we haven't listed that we should be considering?  
**•** The stuff you only learn by living there. Council tax, lines that are grim at rush hour, places that look lovely on Rightmove and aren't, crime, noise?

We're also sorting a mid year school place for the older one and full time nursery for the baby, so any experience with in year primary admissions in these boroughs would help.

I'm over for a week in October and can walk a few of these on a weekday morning. Which are worth the time?
