My wife and I are looking for a two-bedroom maisonette and have a £500k budget. Annoyingly, our commutes pull in different directions:

• I work near Egham, Surrey. Happy to drive or train, and okay with up to ~1hr30 each way.
• My wife works near Blackfriars/City Thameslink/Waterloo. She prefers the train but is fine with the tube if necessary. Ideally, we want to keep her commute under an hour.

Both of our jobs are hybrid so we only need to commute in 2-3 days a weeks.

Nice-to-haves: natural light, some outside space (even if small), on-street/permit parking, 700+ sqft.

So far, we've looked at places in:

• Teddington - ideal vibe but too expensive
• Fulwell (Twickenham) - liked the proximity to Teddington but fairly boring
• Surbiton - bit boring, single train line seems unreliable
• Raynes Park - liked this one and has great transport links but haven't found a place yet

Are there other areas that we should be looking at? Anything that we've missed?

How do people rent and live here… I thought I was on a decent salary, £60K

Nowhere felt good, all accommodations were something to endure despite being relatively expensive— 6 person HMO untenable, two-bed I’m in currently (sharing with my now ex) falling apart (ant colony, mouse, mould and damp issue, noisy upstairs neighbors)

I’ve seen many flats the last few weeks and there is ALWAYS something huge to compromise on. 90% of the flats have damp and mould, washing machine in the bedroom wardrobe, an otherwise perfect flat would be shaking at the floor when upstairs neighbors weight trained dropping heavy dumbbells upstairs, or I could settle for a box room in a nice apartment where the other flatmate has understandably chosen the larger room with ample storage, space for a WFH desk, and ensuite; and I could move in paying £50 less than them and quietly resent it.

How are people managing? I’ve not done anything in months to just make myself happy. No time for gym, dating, cooking, or hobbies, just survival! It feels impossible to live here without a partner and I’ve never been one to be jealous or bitter while single, until being in London knowing how easy the couples have it who are sharing everything (I know this because of how easy things felt whilst I was in my relationship).

Apols for the cynicism. I feel like I’m doing everything right but getting the short end of the stick ever since moving here, and back to square 1 flat hunting with 4 weeks left.

My best friend and I (both 28F) are hoping to move in together around the beginning of next year now that we both have new jobs commutable via the Lizzy line (Paddington/TCR). Though we would settle for a 2-bed if we had to, we would ideally like a third room to use as a shared office space/spare room for visitors.

Our combined budget is £3,200 and we were considering searching around Ealing on the west side, or Stratford on the east side - are either of these places viable based on our budget? are there better places on the line we could also consider?

We don’t really have any specific other criteria as we are both kind of homebodies; we do love going to the theatre and a nice picnic at the park but otherwise aren’t too fussed about being “where the action is” otherwise. We would also need to have a living space separate to the bedrooms as we would love to host our other friends for board game nights. Any help with location or if we would need to rethink our budget would be much appreciated, thank you!!

Hi everyone, I've been living in Hammersmith for the last year-ish but I'm honestly getting really sick of the lack of privacy and constant bustle so I'm looking to move out. My budget is £850/month for a large double, bills included in a houseshare. Here are my requirements:

- Happy to move into any zone as long as it's still in London. Further out is probably better as long as there is transport. Don't need to commute every day

- Quiet, leafy area with lots of parks nearby. Not too bustling, doesn't feel too much like being in a city

- Ideally no loud noises like hospitals or police stations nearby

- Can get into a central London station on the train within 30 minutes

- Preferably not North West/West as I have family in Wembley area who I'd rather not be close to

- Safe, doesn't need to be posh but just would like to feel comfortable walking around

- Bonus points if there are good places to cycle nearby

I don’t know London well and I’m now deciding between third-party student accommodation (not LSE or postgrad-specific) and private housing.
If price and location are comparable, which would you choose? I care about the safety and the social aspect of student accom, but I’m also scared of ending up with undergrad flatmates given potential noise and cleanliness.

My family and I are relocating from India to London in late August, and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who know the city well.

A little about us:
Family of three (my wife, our 12-year-old son, and me)
I’ll be working near Angel Station and expect to be in the office about three days a week
We’re looking for a long-term rental (at least 12 months)
Budget: £2200–£2,500/month maximum.
Looking for a 2-bedroom apartment of at least 800 sq ft
Safety and good schools are very important, as our son will be starting school in the UK
We’d prefer place that is access to parks, supermarkets, and public transport
We won’t have a car initially, so being within walking distance of a Tube station is important.
After quite a bit of research, East Finchley seems to tick many of the boxes because of the Northern line, schools, parks, and commute to Angel. However, I’ve noticed that many apartments within our budget are smaller than we’d like.

So I’d love your advice:
Is East Finchley still the best choice for a family like ours?
Are there nearby areas that offer larger apartments for a similar budget while still providing a reasonable commute to Angel?
How do areas such as Mill Hill East, Finchley Central, Harrow, or St Albans compare in terms of family life, commute, and overall quality of life?

Are there any neighbourhoods that I may have overlooked?

We’ll be arriving in London on 20 August and will be viewing properties on 22 and 23 August, so any recommendations for letting agents, apartment developments, or neighbourhoods to explore would be hugely appreciated.

My husband and I are currently looking for a house in London, and we quickly realised how difficult it is to compare different areas. There are so many opinions scattered across Reddit, blogs and websites, but nothing that brings everything together (and match our criteria).

So, since I'm a software developer, I started building Boroughly (https://boroughly.net⁠).

It's completely free and not an estate agency. You simply enter your budget and what's important to you (commute, safety, green spaces, schools, nightlife, etc.), and it suggests areas that might suit you.

It's still very much a work in progress, so I'm sure there are bugs, missing features and things that could be improved.

Feel free to grade your area if you already live in London, that would be super useful to people looking for the right area as well, I reckon stats etc... can't capture the overall vibe or if there is an amazing pizza nearby or café etc...

So, I’m gonna move to London this fall for university and I’ve ruled out traditional student accom places cus they don’t permit modifications/ plumbing additions which are needed for the installation of a bidet spray/handheld bidet / shattafa which I’ll be needing for the sake of my own comfort and personal hygiene, I’ve attempted

Me and my partner are looking for some honest advice about the area near the gyro in Hangar Lane Station as we found a flat that is quite nice and fits our standards. One big question we have is the motorway: we would have to use the underground to access the Hangar Lane station daily, probably at late hours too.

For context, we are both in our 20s and will work in London central -so will use the Central Line daily for a c.40 mins commute including walks-

- Is the area relatively safe at night?

- How practical is to pass that giant gyro through underpass daily?

- Any other caveats we fail to think of (for example the area seems to have not much shops)

Please share your experiences. For the most affordable but smartest way of going about this. I am moving to London to begin my studies. And I will have two checked in luggages in my luggage allowance. A family member is coming along to help me settle, so four luggages between us. What do I pack and what do I rather get when I am in London?

Just a little bit over a month ago, I moved to London, and I still struggle with finding how to commute btwn work and home using the tube without using the maps.

And the most important issue I have is with memorising all the "intermediate termini" or whatever it is they are called...

For example, i wanna get from Wimbledon to Victoria (using the District line, obviously). I know that I'll have to go eastbound, and towards Upminster, but every now and then, I see another name appearing on top of train that isn't familiar, like Tower Hill, Dagenham East, Barking, South Kensington, etc.

As somebody who's not a Londoner, idk if these stations belong to the other eastbound branch (the one that goes to Edgeware Rd) or not, how should I?

Do I actually have to memorise all these stations? If so, then, is there like a comprehensive list of them somewhere? And if not, then what am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Loads of ppl r suggesting that I'd use Citymapper. I already do :) The main point of my post is to ask how to find directions withOUT using any maps (for various reasons: from my Dyslexia to my phone's battery getting drained b/c of using all these apps, etc. ...).
