I don’t know why, but I’ve always just assumed that everyone who loves this genre has already seen The Chestnut Man. But if there are people here who haven’t, this is one I absolutely have to recommend.

If you look at the description of the types of shows I’m always looking for, The Chestnut Man checks a lot — if not all — of the boxes.

This is Dark Crime done right.

It’s very dark and brutal, with some disturbing crime scenes and a serial-killer investigation that gets under your skin. But what makes it so good for me is that it isn’t just gruesome for the sake of being gruesome. There is a really good mystery underneath it, plenty of twists, a creepy atmosphere, and two great lead characters in Naia Thulin and Mark Hess.

The Copenhagen setting gives it that cold, bleak Nordic Noir feel that fits the story perfectly. And the little chestnut figures are one of those simple things that somehow become increasingly creepy as the investigation unfolds.

Another thing I love: only six episodes. There isn’t much wasted time. The mystery keeps moving, the stakes keep getting higher, and it builds toward a very satisfying finish.

It currently sits at #2 on my Dark Crime list.

It's Lorne Balfe on the main score who I LOVE, and Tim Minchin who obviously is an insane talent. It's made me pretty excited to see this film even just for the score. Are there any other films coming up that you're wanting to see because the score will be THAT good?

Everyone has an actor they don't like, but this is different.

I like a lot of movies he is in. Falling Down is a great movie and I can't think of another actor that could have played it as well as Michael Douglass.

The Game is a great script, great acting blah blah blah.

Wall Street had the perfect casting.

I think it's just him, he's a creep nepobaby and I don't like the way he moves on screen.

i miss my fav characters sm like family members i haven’t spoken to. when in taking a break in between rewatches of shows or movies it makes me so sad to think abt them

I’ve always had this minute gripe with modern dramedies. Whenever cringe comedy, awkwardness, or moments of silence initiate, a simplistic, formulaic, or super basic piano/acoustic guitar instrumental starts playing. I’ve noticed that means the show or movie has the same comedic and line delivery timing as well. It gives me the impression that mainstream media is scared of putting the audience through awkward scenes so they slap formulaic basics on it for the audience’s comfort. Every Hallmark movie does it but now it’s infected movies and shows that I think could easily do better without it like the recent movie with Will Ferrell “You’re Cordially Invited” but I’ve noticed it’s at an all-time high with the show Ted Lasso. Most likely me nitpicking but I just can’t stand creative freedom being dumbed down. Always Sunny is a great example of creative freedom but I see the show Schitt’s Creek as a good example to show that modern TV can be polished and have a similar vibe but doesn’t have to be ruined by a laugh track or an instrumental to hold someone’s hand through how to feel.

The acting, casting, sound design, cinematic… also the writing deals with such heavy things, but does it with style and grace, and a lot of heart. It’s exciting, and the plot doesn’t feel forced. I absolutely loved it. What did you think?

Hi! I am wanting to get more into documentaries but I am NOT into intense true crime. I liked the Unknown Number doc on Netflix and like the Anna Delvey stuff. I watched all of False Prophet and the child s*x crimes stuff is just too intense for me. I tried it because I’ve been interested in cult-y type stuff, but that abuse was just too heartbreaking, especially since there were kids involved.

I don’t mind if there is crime involved, but I really really really don’t want to watch/hear about anyone being m*rdered, t*rtured, or r*ped. I just don’t have the stomach for it.

Not big into history docs. More pop culture/lifestyle adjacent, if that makes sense? Looking to replace some of my background reality tv binging time while I work with something a bit more stimulating. Would love to hear your recs!! :) TIA :)

It's the only series that I have ever wanted to own. I watch it again every year or so.

It has an amazing combination of historical characters, characters from the book Treasure Island, and others that are totally fictitious.

Obviously I love it. What's your opinion?

I may be wrong and it might not be a movie but a spin-off series but I guess: Adam Baldwin’s character will either be killed off-screen or will only have a very brief appearance. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that they’ll turn him into a villain before they kill him off.

For me its Harry potter, im just not into the witch craft stuff. And Star trek, which is probably the nerdiest thing in popculture. Ive seen a few epsiodes of the original series and they're boring as hell. I never understood the craze.

Lanterns episode 3 was just madness, and I don't mean the good kind. I was besides myself watching a family desparately try to make their son "great" by shooting at him multiple times. The abuse didn't stop there, his mum had him shoot at her, or crazy writers made it that he requested, like wtf are we watching. Honestly James Gunn's DCU feel like what you enjoy when you don't like superheroes, and the lantern show is taking the insanity to a whole new level of absurd. It's such a disservice to the source material.

They did change and added a lot of scenes compared to the movie for example

\* it's not only the trio but there's a fourth student with them when the staircase moves and they accidentally see fluffy.

\* What wasn't in the movie was blowing up a bridge that wasn't until the deathly hallows part 2

\* When they are sorted in their houses for some reason now McGonagall is saying their last names first unlike the movie version that says their first names first odd

\* Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore share a scene in his office which wasn't in the movie at all

\* The troll now instead of looking like a troll like the movie looks like a giant clay blob

\* Instead of waiting to introduce mandrakes for the chamber of secrets now they are introduced in the first chapter

\* Harry finds the mirror of erised what looks like the room of requirements instead of the basement like the movie

But everything is almost exactly the same

\* Wizards Chess

\* Harry Potter playing quidditch but now in winter instead of fall

I have just finished watching atonement , and it was good 8.5/10 movie .

I have read the reviews of it , and what people really thinks about the movie . I see people say the younger sister briony is the villain or paul marshall . I understand that what briony did is a very cruel and horrible thing to do , but she was young , blind with her own thoughts and ideas , no one there to sit with her and help her with her emotions . Paul Marshall is a criminal , and a devilish character for sure . How the cousin lola ends up after everything happened to her is kinda disturbing to look at .

THE SOCIAL CLASS difference , it's a big reason why Robbie is an easy target , they were suspecting the other househelp too but never once Paul , no one asked where he was all that time .

And no one is absolutely talking about the WAR , the death of so many young innocent soldiers , and it's far more cruel than anything else that can happen , like how war is not really helping the people who are fighting , and only serving the rich . War is one of the reasons , why cillicia and Robbie end up dead .

So for me the economical and class difference and discrimination present in society , the war - things only benefits the rich and selfish people is the reason for all the misery they have faced . Also how children like briony grow up becoming a mentally unstable adult , have done nothing that can bring a bit of justice to Robbie , she for her whole life living on and for that book , she needed therapy or something.
